Jets' Coles busts out, then gets busted up
By ANDREW GROSS / THE JOURNAL NEWS
    (Original publication: December 18, 2006)

MINNEAPOLIS - Laveranues Coles walked stiffly to the podium, sought support as he took the step up and winced as he did. After talking for several minutes, that scene repeated itself when the Jets' wide receiver stepped down."When you get sandwiched between two linebackers - I mean, I weigh 195 pounds - it did not feel good when it happened," Coles said. "I was thankful that I was able to get up and get into the locker room."

Coles had a season-best 12 catches for 144 yards and one touchdown in yesterday's 26-13 win over the Vikings. But his day ended when E.J. Henderson and Ben Leber crunched him around the Vikings' 30-yard line as Napoleon Harris picked off Jets quarterback Chad Pennington with 4:53 left in the fourth quarter. There was no official word on Coles' status and whether he had injured his ribs or back - or both. Coles was examined after the game and will likely undergo further tests today. However, given the Jets' cloak of secrecy regarding injuries, Coles' status is not likely to be certain until next Monday's game at Miami."I thought Laveranues' performance was outstanding," Jets coach Eric Mangini said. "It's very typical Laveranues. He comes out, he plays incredibly hard every week, he makes the tough catches and he had some opportunities."

    Actually, more opportunities than usual.

Coles leads the Jets with 87 catches this season and moved into eighth place on the team's all-time list with 320 receptions with the team - and 502 for his career. But he'd caught just seven passes over the last two weeks as both the Packers and Texans concentrated on double-teaming him.

Yesterday, the Vikings often tried single coverage on Coles."Any time I have the opportunity in one-on-one coverage, I want the ball," Coles said. "Whether (Pennington) throws me the ball is something different. When I get single coverage, I'm going to do my best to win. I think (the Vikings) did a good job of mixing it up along with having the safety on the hash. But I didn't expect to see that much single coverage, I must admit. Whenever I see that much, I get excited."Such was the case on Coles' 21-yard touchdown catch to make it 17-7 with 6:12 left in the first half.Coles beat cornerback Fred Smoot down the left sideline, though it appeared he used his right arm to push away from Smoot at the 5 before catching the ball.

That's the right hand Coles hurt on the final play in a 31-28 loss to the Colts in Week 4, a wild, lateral-filled kickoff return. And in addition to his hand, Coles was listed as questionable for much of the season with a calf injury.

Now, he could have a rib injury. Or a back injury.

    Or both.

"I don't know where he hit me, to be honest," Coles said. "I just knew that it hurt. I just kind of got sandwiched. I think I got hit in the back, but I am fine. I am sure Coach is not going to let me out of practice so I've just got to move on."

Which he then did, albeit very stiffly and with a groan.

    Extra points

Happy return: Ex-Viking nose tackle  C.J. Mosley  enjoyed his return to Minnesota with the Jets, sacking quarterback Brad Johnson for a 6-yard loss in the second quarter. After the game, a group of Vikings fans cheered him as he walked back to the Jets' locker room. "I don't know what to say about that, I guess they were happy to see me out there," said Mosley, who has six tackles to go with his one sack this season. "The sack was nice, but I was thinking about my next one, honestly." The second-year pro was activated for the second straight week but just the fourth time this season.

Bollinger, Robinson inactive: The Vikings designated Brooks Bollinger , acquired from the Jets for Mosley, as their third quarterback as he battles a shoulder injury and also had veteran wide receiver Marcus Robinson on the inactive list because of an ankle injury, even though Robinson had been probable for the game. "I kept thinking it was coming this week," Vikings coach Brad Childress said. "He just couldn't answer the bell."

Miller's tough day: Jets cornerback Justin Miller had two kickoff returns for 45 yards, but he drew Mangini's wrath and was yanked from the secondary after being called for unnecessary roughness after giving Vikings running back Artose Pinner a blow to the head in the second quarter. Miller was also called for holding in the third quarter on a Jets' punt return.

That other guy: Jets kicker Mike Nugent booted field goals of 25, 52, 45 and 20 yards yesterday, meaning he's now converted his last 13 attempts. It still shocks him that he missed two field goals and an extra-point attempt in the Jets' season-opening win over the Titans. "I just kind of look back and think, 'What was I doing in Tennessee?' " Nugent said.

Injury report: Jets - Rookie center Nick Mangold appeared to hurt his left knee, though it was reported as a hip problem, on the second play from scrimmage but returned to start the next series. Running back Cedric Houston was shaken up with 13:40 left in the fourth quarter but returned two plays later. Wide receiver Laveranues Coles took a shot to his rib cage with 4:53 to go in fourth quarter and did not return.

Vikings - Defensive tackle Spencer Johnson left the game in the fourth quarter after injuring both his ankle and knee and did not return. Wide receiver Troy Williamson played despite spraining his shoulder, and running back Chester Taylor played through a wrist injury.

I am not crying about the officials, but shouldn't that hit have been clipping? I know Coles was pushed into the Viking player, but the returner had the ball and the blocker gave coles a forearm to the back.

yeah i think it shouldve been, especially since coles was behind the returner, the blocker obviously had control of coles and Leber just came in full speed and decked him in his blindside.

it was nothing incidental. thats for sure.

now onto the injury, as tough as he is I think he'll be on the field come monday. im betting he has severe bruising. which doesnt sound like it would keep him from playing. will it hold back his performance? yes. but expect LC to spend plenty of time in the whirlpool this week and suit up come x-mas.

otherwise we will be looking for mccareins(who actually deserves some good credit for yesterday) smith and cotchery to bring us our yuletide blessings

I don't like their sound, but Amy is pretty.

Back to football. Looks like the Redskins got the edge on the trade last year, but we're getting it back now. No way this offense is anywhere near as good with Moss as opposed to Coles at WR

I was thinking the same thing yesterday, about how lucky we are to have him back. This guy is one tough dude, which is what Penny needs when he dinks and dunks across the middle. Between Coles, Cotchery, McCareins and Baker, these DEFs don't know WTF to do.

It should've at least been a block in the back...

yep, it was a pretty clear block in the back.

it's good that we have that extra day to rest up, but I think he'll be fine.

    Laveranues Coles update

    By Dan Leberfeld

    Posted Dec 17, 2006

Jets star wide receiver Laveranues Coles was injured in the fourth quarter.

After an interception by Viking linebacker Napolean Harris on a pass intended for Coles, the wide receiver was leveled by linebacker Ben Leber.

Coles suffered a back injury, and was down for several minutes. After the game, he went for an MRI, and the Jets got some good news. While he's very sore, he didn't suffer a serious injury.

The extremely tough Coles should be ready to play next week against the Miami Dolphins.

Coles lit up the Viking secondary with 12 catches, 144 yards and a touchdown, in the Jets 26-13 win in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. The Jets are now 8-6.

    saw this :

    Laveranues Coles-WR- Jets Dec. 18 - 10:49 am et

Laveranues Coles is expected to play against the Dolphins on Christmas.

Official word on his MRI results has not yet surfaced, but he seemed to be in good spirits after Sunday's game and vowed to practice this week. Coles should be in nearly all fantasy lineups unless he is inactive against Miami.

    Laveranues Coles-WR- Jets Dec. 17 - 6:07 pm et

Scout.com reports that an MRI on Laveranues Coles didn't reveal any serious injuries. He should be ready for next week.

Don't take this report as gospel, but it's a good early sign. Look for Coles to be listed as questionable, though, just because the Jets will try to keep his status a mystery.
