I think Kellen will be sitting on the bench awhile. Chad is now 30 years old - qbs can play till 35, very intelligent, nobody READS defenses better, his arm will continue to getter stronger as he recovers from his two surgeries, and Mangini LOVES brains on the field. If the Jets can get to the big game, there is no reason in a WARM weather site or DOME, that Chad can no lead us to a SUPER BOWL.

one hit and it can all be over...to predict that he'll be the QB for 5 years is unreasonable

This game changes nothing. He played well, but he is still too limited and not the long term QB solution for the Jets.

You make it sound like Clemens is dumb, he also has been to compared to Chad in alot of categories, with a stronger arm.

I don't think Chad is here for the next 2 years, much less 5. I think in camp he and Kellen will battle with Chad winning the job, so their might be one more season of Pennington...

    5 is a little much.

Let me know how you feel after Miami. He has limitations that can frustrate the best of fans. If he finishes strong then yes. But if he struggles once again against a good defense(Miami) taking advantage of his weak arm, then I say lets move on.

hydro...you also said in some of your posts that you did not like the match-up with minn. this week...and that our season ended last week on 4th and one....so what kind of credibility do you have?

It amazes me that Pennington's good games change nothing but his off games change everything. Hmmmmmm.

5 more years is asking alot of Pennington. Didn't we already try this with a 30 something running back with bad knees who's a future HOF'er?

I don't see 5 years. Perhaps two but definetly not 5.

The top 5 QBs read defenses better than Chad does. You don't succeed in this league without being able to read a defense. If Chad had the physical talent, I think he would be a top 10 QB, but he'd need to read defenses a bit better than he currently does.

For Chad to be the QB for the next 5 years, he is going to need to be more consistent. Under Mangini and Schott he might continue improving, and get to that top 10 level. I don't think he will ever be a top 5 QB because of his physical limitations, but if he were to actually be the best in reading defenses in the league, he would probably be right there at 6.

hydro you said....12/11/06 on post titled "season ends on 4th and 1"

less that 1 yard. u got to man up everyone n the building knw what was going to happen. it ws gonna be a qb sneak. like i said there no high science in a qb sneak. get a hat on the guy and push for he yard. and as player chad had the option and declined it. this isnt even mangini fault chad bitched up.

He's one of the better QBs in the league at reading defenses. His INTs come mainly on poor throws, but not because of a mis-read in the defense. The ability to read a defense, especially at the line of scrimmage, is without question one of his strengths.

No way Mangini keeps Chad more then one more year. He's not dumb, he sees what we all see. That Chad has no zip, and has a pitcher like release where it takes him a sec or two to get the ball out of his hands.
Chad had a great game today, and I'm rooting for him. But I just don't see it happening, when we play good defenses Chad cant step up.

    JoeJet,
Why did you start this thread when the concept is already addressed in the "Keep Chad Three Years Poll"?
Since, a small majority has already voted that they don't want him for the next three years It just seems monotonous to start the same thread over and over.

According the a Jets fan on a Jets messageboard. It's hard to really prove something like this, because it's not like you can point to stats or anything to get your point across. It's also important to note that making the right pre-snap read, or even a read during a play, doesn't necessarily result in a positive play. There is way more to football than making the textbook "right read."

The top 5 guys imo in reading a defense:

    Peyton Manning
    Tom Brady
    Carson Palmer
Drew Bledsoe (disagree all you want, he makes the right pre-snap reads, just he, like Chad, fails during the play)
Marc Bulger (he might be the best actually)

In addition, I think Trent Green, Alex Smith, Drew Brees, Donovan McNabb, and possible Ben Roth and Matt Leinart (I need to see more of these two before I make a decision) are either better or at least comparable to Chad, such that you can't say Chad clearly makes better reads than them.

Chad is really only clearly better at reads than JP Losman, David Carr, Joey Harrington and a few others, guys that really can't go past their first WR anyway. Again, I think Chad is good, just I can't put him in the top 5. I think he's in the top 10 in terms of the mental aspects, but it starts getting murky around there anyway.

If you can put Bledsoe in the top 5 for making the right pre-snap reads and not executing the play, then how do you justify putting Pennington so far down on the list?

Besides, you're basically contradicting yourself by saying in one sentence it's hard to prove something like this, and then in the next paragraph you're listing a bunch of QBs that are ahead of him.

Based on what I've heard people in the league say publicly, and what I've seen myself (specifically this year, since this is the only year he's been able to change plays at the line of scrimmage), I think Pennington is one of the smarter QBs in the league, and is one of the better QBs in the league in terms of reading a defense. Top 5 most likely. Overall, he is in the middle of the pack because his physical tools bring him down. But mentally, he is one of the best QBs in the NFL. I don't think you'll find many people who agree with your opinion, that QBs such as Drew Bledsoe and Alex Smith are in the same league as Pennington when it comes to reading the defense.

Thats what inconsistent qb's will do to you. The roller coaster ride contines.
I guess some would just favor it the other way. Praise him when he has a great game and just shutup when he has a bad game.

Let Chad go down to Miami and win that game. Let him go down there and put two crucial games together and I will give him his props.

It wont change the fact that I think he has a very weak arm. That said, I would be very very impressed.
