Win/win/win for all parties involved. Jets get much needed picks. Giants get a run stuffer. Leonard doesn't have to uproot.
So again, from a Giants perspective... Either they re-sign a guy who they've evaluated for 8 games to decent money and give up a 3 and a 4.... or they let him walk and give up a 3 and a 5 for 8 games of a guy that won't be on the team next season. What??
good trade for both sides. giants have cap space starting next year to keep leo long term and need more 3-4 talent in the front 7. jets get the 3rd round comp pick we would have gotten but a year earlier plus a 4th rounder the following year. I wish leo the best.
If the Giants re-sign Williams, it's a 3rd this year and a 4th next year. That's a good haul for a guy we weren't going to pay in free agency this offseason.
Could turn into a 4th rounder instead of a 5th: The 2021 5th-round pick that the Giants are trading to the Jets for Leonard Williams becomes a 4th-round pick if he signs a contract extension before the start of the league year, per source. Jets are paying $4 million of Williams’ $6 million salary this season.
they are going to resign him unless something crazy happens (like a massive injury). giants have a ton of cap starting next year because of all the cap shedding down this year and the dead cap that goes away after this year. they recently switched to a 3-4 and really need more talent for the scheme in the front 7.
I think Leo has settled in to be an average player. Except when we play the Giants this season. He will probably have a 4 sack game.
Sooo did they not watch him struggle in the 3-4 the last few years? And do they think he's going to turn it around enough to warrant ditching a 3 and a 4?
It's amazing. I heard the name Reggie White thrown out there when he was drafted. For me, Leonard Williams has one simple problem that isn't coachable. And it'll always keep him from being a good pass rusher. He's slow out of his stance and slow off the ball. He's stout against the run and once he finally gets to the offensive lineman he's a decent hand fighter. Pass rushers get about 2.5 seconds to get to most quarterbacks. Leonard Williams CAN get there and does get there and does eventually beat his money. He's just always too late.
Ordinarily I'd "lol" a clearly absurd light-hearted joke posted like this. But with the Jets over the last decade I don't even dare smile at this, but rather clench certain parts of my anatomy because deep down you know that there is a terrible risk this is really what happens.
Williams in two weeks will have at least two sacks against us. It'll be very Jet like if he becomes the next LT. In all seriousness he's a good run stuffer. He'll be ok for the Giants. That being said the Jets get a pick probably between 65-75 for him when it would have been 95-105 if he left as a free agent in 2021. Add in this draft is deep with corners, oline and cbs. All things we need. Be a good trade for us I believe. Who's next?
We were supposedly getting the "best" player in the 2015 draft. I think the questions need to be asked about our asst coaches: what the hell are they doing ? If the players we are drafting are NOT playing well, it's not necesarily on the HC, it's on the assistants who work with them 24/7 during the week. Every year I hear about the great work that Dante S. does for the Patriots OL.....does anybody even know the NAME of our OL coach ?
I'll wait to see how he plays, and who we draft with the draft capital we just acquired. One thing is for sure, Leonard Williams never lived up to where he was drafted at.
Having 2 sacks versus a Jets o-line that's tied for giving up the most sacks through half the season (I think it's 34 or 37), is not some sort of triumph. This move is 100% Joe Douglas, and I hope this is the first of many. This entire jets roster needs to be turned over
Good trade but I think we're gonna regret it week 10. I bet Leo is gonna have the best game of his career. I'm looking at career high in sacks, considering the O-line he'll be facing.
