I don't care for the style of play either but the CS is trying to maximize the effectiveness of the offense while working with the pretty severe handicap of a QB that can't make alot of throws. If you watch football other then the Jets you see plenty of teams doing this. Throwing short and having the WRs try to run for it seems more plausible to me then asking Chad to gun a ball 12 yards down the field in traffic. The check downs that annoy me are the ones where they need 10 yards and he throws one 4 yards to a guy with a LB draped all over him, but even this is preferable to a turnover.
No wonder why we can never score. Since we go to third down 10 times a drive, we're virtually guaranteed to fail. I'd rather have a team that has a lower 3rd down % but can actually score without needing to go through 10 third downs a drive. We need yardage in chunks.
The thing people either miss or ignore is that the defense also knows where the first down is and covers the deeper WRs that way. So as a QB, you often have the option of taking a sack, throwing it away, or hitting the short guy to at least get a few yards and hope he can break a tackle and run for the sticks. The design going in isn't usually to throw so short, usually it's the last option.
this is true..thats why our west coast offense(or wahtever you call it) sucks...as someone said in an earlier post, if you continue to get into third down situations, youre bound to fail....234 things have to go right every scoring drive we have. not to mention once the cold, windy weather hits, we're dead
This is right on the money. This is one thing that drove me absolutely crazy about Hackett and although Schotty seems to be an improvement we're still in 3 or 4 do or die 3rd and mediums before we can even think about a FG(unless it was a kickoff to Miller). Makes you wonder if the reason for this lies someplace else other the OC.
That's not all on the QB, either. If you can run for 4 yards on first down you set yourself up, but we get cute with Brad Smith or some little trick play and often end up 2nd and 12, that kind of thing. That or we run for no gain, we do that a lot too.
That's fair but an offense whos plan is to get 4 yards a play all the way down the field is pretty much doomed to failure as one bad play or a penalty pretty much blows up the drive. I know a 2nd and 20 is a terrible situation for any team but when it happens to the Jets I feel like that's pretty much it for the drive. Of course that could just be my overriding pessimism.
Chad fumble... Chad interception... Chad throw for -2 yards on third and 8.... Chad sack... I have no idea where our problems are? (sarcasm)
That is what we did against Indy, 3 ruins then we try to throw on 4th and G from the 3, the same thing against Chi- 2 runs then we try to throw on 3rd and G from the 5. We are putting him in near impossible situations to succeed.
Haha, probably a little bit of both. I don't know that the plan is to get 4 yards every time, but if you can get 4 yards on first down, you open up your options. Now at 2nd and 6 you can throw long, short, run, that's the difference. Get behind the 8-ball on first down and you put your QB in a tough spot, any QB. The other thing is people focus on the plays that don't work. Someone mentioned Chad's 3rd down efficiency isn't that bad. He hit a 3rd and 12 or something last week. A lot of that is on the WRs. How many times do we see Coles beat his man and Chad hit him over the middle for a first down? I see it every game, but people dwell on the ones we don't make because they don't like Chad. Not you in particular, but a lot of people here.
I maintain that this thread is beyond stupid. If you want to talk about the Jets 3rd down issues, that's fine. But the hyperbole is ridiculous. Do any of you actually think the Jets should punt on 3rd down?
How many times have we seen Chad pass the ball to the receiver short of the first down and then watch them scratch and claw for it?
Bingo , Third and ten other teams are not affraid of the run so they drop every one back into coverage and whats left for Chad but an underneith throw and a pray that the reciver can turn it into a third down conversion. Taking what they give you!
