Last I checked, Philip Rivers is having a pretty good year and the only game I remember them losing(I know they lost twice, I just don't remember who else beat them) they lost to the Ravens and that was because Philip Rivers had a bad game, mostly because he was handcuffed by the coach. Ever since that game, Rivers has been throwing the ball and its no coincidence that LT2 now has scored 2+ TD's for 7 straight games. LT2 is without a doubt my #2 on MVP and he's my offensive player of the year, but I still vote Brees #1 right now.
For me, it's Brees without a question. LT is the best offensive player this year, but Brees is clearly most valuable. I mean, picture that Saints team with Aaron Brooks at QB. They'd be 3-10 at best.
Sorry, but no way. The Saints have changed almost everything on offense, not just the QB. The o-line changed almost everyone and suddenly became a brick wall. 2nd in the NFL in Sacks allowed (INDY), despite being a team that throws deep quite often. That is the most impressive thing in NO this year.
I just really believe that LT carries this team. I am not saying Rivers isn't a good QB, but I do not believe their record would be as good as it is without LT pounding the ball week in, week out. He's a rookie as far as playing time goes, much like Ben R in Pitt was last year, and he had the luxury of having a good running game and a defense to bail him out when he was ok, but not great. And I can't fault anyone for choosing Brees. He's a good pick as well. The other deciding factor for me is that SD is in the stronger conference than the Saints are. We could end up seeing a NO - SD Super Bowl. I think that would be a pretty good game to watch.
First of all, I'm not so sure that the Hurricane Katrina connection should be overlooked. What Brees is doing in New Orleans (which, despite what Monday Night Football would lead you to believe, is still a broken city with almost no internal economy or infastructure) is nothing short of amazing, and it's against tremendous adversity. Secondly, it doesn't hurt that he leads the league in passing yardage, QB rating, passing touchdowns, passing yards per game, and completion % (among starters.) LT is having one of the greatest seasons in NFL history, but I don't think that he is the league's most valuable player.
I agree that New Orleans is still a city that is basically in ruins. Drew Brees might as well be the leagues MVP but, I dont see how the problems in that city effects his play.
I'll be very interested to see who wins. If Brees is able to break Marino's yardage record, he'd increase his chances a lot. I think whoever ends up sitting because seedings are locked will lose out. Both deserve it, but I'd have to say because of flex scheduling, SD has been on TV a whole lot more and that could influence voters.
