Unless the coaching staff and players are all trying to cover for Harrison (which it may very well be), you got to be at least slightly more optimistic about this.

Center is a strange position, its more cerebral than anything. Having experience with Sam should help and having a big dude in Osemele next to him should help more.

I've said it 100 times, but there was not way I expected us to go from a team with a huge shortage of talent at many positions to a team with no holes on the roster. Guys like Harrison and Daryl Roberts are going to have to make it happen this year.

I figured Harrison was the worst NFL player on earth after seeing that it took for Toilet Bowles to replace Spencer Long in Miami. All I know is Harrison did a very good job at center. what else can I say

He was just a plant installed by the powers that be of the NFL. Hackenberg says so.

eh bowles was a good DC who didn't know how to be a head coach. just like rex was. he wasn't a moron he just wasn't qualified for the job. He'll be fine being a DC again and that's why he landed a new job so easily. DC is his coaching talent ceiling

I didn't care to look but I am certain that nearly all new head coaching hires with the exception of Brian Flores going to Miami were offensive minded head coaches. Defensive coordinators have to evolve with the game or thats going to be their ceiling in this league.

We've seen this movie for over a decade here firsthand. A defensive minded head coach will typically come in and then spend years of early draft capital on defensive players. They tend to have the same strategy in running an offense like its 1980 with a heavy run game and a QB who "manages the game" and put the entire onus on the defense to keep the game close to win it. This kind of strategy is no longer a viable in the modern NFL and defensive coaches need to change it up.

yeah seems to be the mind set of many old school coaches. they think you can win by pounding the rock and playing defense when in reality nowadays it's a QB driven league

    Bumping this thread, because;
    1) Jonotthan Harrison deserves a lot of credit for his recent play.
    2) I cant figure out why he was delegated to the bench to begin with.

Adam Gase back in May said he was impressed by JH. Not sure what happened after that. I think the majority of us would assess JH as solid since taking over for Spencer Long as well as his recent play. Shit, - even Darnold plays better w/JH starting at center. Hopefully this was the only real bad blip to go on Joe Douglas (paying Kalil like $8 mil guaranteed to come out of retirement).

Granted we're talking NYG, Washington & Oakland, - but this O-line has played SIGNIFICANTLY better with JH at center. This guy is signed for next year at $2 million. I say keep him, give him the full year & then see what happens after that. We're not talking Wayne F Hunter here. The guy DESERVES the starting shot in 2020 without competition. We can draft a center in 2021.

I think he should be penciled in as the starter but we should keep a lookout for an upgrade . He should have to compete or at least know that a replacement is behind him

It's such a niche position that it can be kind of difficult to do so.

There's not much in free agency in the way of center either that appears to be an upgrade especially now that JC Tretter got his extension with the Browns. I would assume Skura with the Ravens is a good player but he's also a RFA who is done for the season. I'm not in love with the idea of giving up draft assets for a guy coming off a season ending injury in November.

Sometimes guys can kick over to guard and it doesn't have a poor effect on their play. Sometimes they're a mess. Not being in complete control of when the ball is being snapped after doing so for your entire life can be difficult. Pat Elflein of the Vikings is a good example of a guy that struggled somewhat this year after kicking out to guard from center.

I'm going to key in on Harrison and see what his push looks like. One things for sure, he's got this line 10x more organized than Kalil did. It'd give us a lot of flexibility in the draft if he can be the starter.

What was the injury to skura ? I haven’t seen any details . Only it’s a knee and he went to ir not sure if it’s real serious or just the timing and he wouldn’t be back for playoffs anyway.

I'm happy to see this brought back to the top and give everybody a little chance to give congrats to Harrison. Like sec314 posted to see what it took to get the Jets to let him into a game I also figured he must be a complete trainwreck looking for a place to crash but all he's done every chance he's gotten is hang in there and be stable. Good for him. Seems like a good person too which never hurts. This is now two years in a row where he's proved to be able to provide better results than the big free agent brought in to do the job.

I disagree that this was a bad move by Douglas. At the very least, the Jets needed depth and insurance at C. Kalil was a former All Pro. By the time Douglas was hired, this was his only possible move to try to shore up the C position other than overpaying in draft picks to try to pry away a backup C from some other team. Yes, Kalil's play had dropped off some last season, but no one could have predicted that Kalil would have been this bad this season. Since Kalil had to get back in shape and football shape and the OL had only like 4 reps in preseason together, Gase should have stuck with Harrison as the starter for the first few weeks since he had been practicing with the other starters. If he had, he may have decided to stick with Harrison, and the OL's play may have been a lot better.
