Let's assume we had a good draft, whatever that means. Why does that mean he deserves to be the GM of the NY Jets? The reality is if we do want to upgrade our scouting, analytics and GM the time to do it is now. Let the new people in at that start so they can really assess the team needs. There's no reason to base keeping a GM or not based on a draft.
If you don’t describe someone starting a go fund me thread to fly a plane to fire out GM as freaking out then I don’t know what to tell you. Just need to go through the draft thread or social media to see Jets fans are indeed freaking out. I get it, Jets haven’t won in 50 years blah blah blah. They are a team clearly headed in right direction and everyone can see that other than of course hysterical Jets fans.
I agree with the original post. Mac has had a great offseason and has really upgraded the roster. We have an offensive minded head coach. We have a "manic genius" as defensive coordinator. We signed a future Hall of Fame Running Back still well in his prime. We likely have a franchise QB going into his second year. We have very good weapons on Offense including a new veteran and highly talented Slot Receiver as well as a young TE who had a very good season last year. We signed a Pro Bowl offensive lineman. Drafted a pass rusher. Drafted arguably the best player in the draft this year. A stud at Safety. And drafted some projects that could prove to be amazing value if everything pans out as planned. I'd say Mac is doing EXACTLY what this franchise has needed for years! And it does not matter what anyone does, this fuckin forum is never happy. EVER happy. Excited for this season!
The all pro LG: was terribly terrible last year. The all pro ILB is one of the highest paid of his kind and is largely a run stuffing lb with questions in coverage. 0.5 sacks per season over last 2 years. Good player but I’d prefer to pay pass rushers The top slot WR- only after we signed him did I hear anyone refer to him as such... he is a good slot wr with injury issues. He is a fine signing but nothing to jizz over. Top player in draft: nah not imo, Id have much preferred a trade down to get even one 2nd and a 1st swap. Future LT- I’m fine with Edoga but let’s slow the breaks. Fans can react however they want. I give the off-season a B-
The NFL is designed to give teams with a crappy roster better draft picks and more cap room. There's only 3 directions you can go in. Up, down and sideways. If you're already a bottom feeding team that leaves 2 direction up and sideways. The reality is other than pure optimism or pessimism none of us know which direction we are actually heading in. Every other team had an offseason. Just because on paper we appear to be better doesn't mean every other team in our division isn't better also. They may have improved more than us or less than us. To be determined. There is no need for freaking out but there is also no need to say we're going in the right direction. We may well be walking in a circle. Your correct nobody should be freaking out but spare me where going in the right direction at this point because none of us know that. There's a certain built in SOJ factor with the fan base that's not warranted, but after a draft there's a certain built in optimism that's also not warranted.
So, because a FEW Jets fans are upset enough to run a GoFundMe to fire Macc, you claim ALL Jets fans are freaking out? Who's overreacting here? And as one who wants Macc gone, I believe I have solid reasons for that POV and don't consider having given him 5 years to produce a playoff-caliber team as "freaking out". I am willing to see if they can make the playoffs this year, but would prefer they just cut Macc loose now because I don't believe he has a winning blueprint, and it makes more sense to get a new GM and Scouting group in now than in January.
I agree with a lot of what you’re saying but strongly disagree you can’t tell what direction s team is heading and I think it is very clear the Jets are heading in the right direction. Obviously unknown factors can change the course like injuries but this is a far more talented roster than when the full rebuild started a couple years ago with what looks to be a very good young QB leading the team.
I agree that the team is better, but we disagree on HOW MUCH better I think. Macc has had major misses that has allowed holes that still need to be filled. That's on him. These were things in his control and he didn't deal with them. Not to mention it was his decision to tear the team down in what fashion, so it's not like he can put that off on anyone else. Jets fans have been among the most patient and loyal in the NFL, even if some bark loudly and complain, it's their right and it's well deserved after all the ineptitude we've suffered. Macc is on the hotseat for good reason, and if the Johnson Boys are having doubts about him, now is the time to cut him loose.
Having a more talented roster is the bare minimum for a GM of a crappy team. Do you trust Mac to make the key critical moves to make us a playoff team and a team that will be in the hunt for a championship for more than 1 year before collapsing the roster?
We can agree to disagree on how much better. Of course Mac has had misses just like every GM before him and every one that will follow him. Yea the complete tear down was his decision and it was sorely needed for many years. I think he’s done a good job with the rebuild and it would be beyond stupid to get rid of him just as it’s about to bear fruit.
Mac has certainly had a nice offseason. It’s almost as if he didn’t want to do anything until he had his QB. As has been discussed before, he could have built a talented OL while he was waiting for his guy. Instead he built up an underperforming defense. Gotta look at the entire body of work, not just what he’s done lately, and his entire body of work isn’t very good.
I dont know if you guys realize that we had other needs other than center, corner, and pass rush. I will go by this round for round. Round 1: I am not that big of a fan of Leonard Williams and I think whether he stays next year or not, Quinnen should be what Leonard was supposed to be AND more. Maybe that means Mac had a terrible draft in 2015, but I am not looking at what he did his first year with Idziks scouts. Round 3a: They did then DID address pass rush in getting Polite, he was plan B after Barr snubbed them. I am actually happy they went to acquire a pure pass rusher than move Barr out of position. I get he has red flags, but he said he learned from the predraft incidents. Its not like he has domestic abuse scandals over his head and just shows how silly the whole pre-draft process can be. Round 3b: They did go offensive line and drafted a tackle. Will Edoga be a starter? I dont know, but I like that Mac actually went offensive line and it wasnt a day 3 pick. PFF who I dont love, but it should be noted that they considered him the 2nd highest pass protection prospect. Tackles that go in nearly round 4 arent a guranteed starter so if he actually becomes a good starter than that is a pleasent surprise. Round 4: They got a tight end who can block and looks way more promising as a TE2 on this team than Tomlinson who was good for 1 reception and 5 yards a game. Watching those plays to him were a joke last year. Dont forget they also got the round 5 pick from trading down. Let's face it, after Herndon we had no quality depth here. Round 5: They are going to either lose Lee to free agency or trade him so they essentially got the poor mans version of him. That is fine because Cashman is expected to be a depth pick and we need that at ILB when Lee is gone. Round 6: Alright you got me this might have been a reach, Austin's two ACL tears makes me think they could have traded back for this guy or not draft him at all, but a late round 6th pick is a gamble anyway. When I look at this draft we filled quite a few needs with the only luxury pick being Quinnen, the best player in the draft. If I told you guys we would get the best player in the draft, a pass rusher, and a potential starting left tackle in the middle rounds, wouldn't you sign up for that?
I would most years, but it felt like he could've done better. The bigger problem, IMO, is that he's missed on too many picks after round 1 in prior years and failed to adequately address the OL.
I wouldn't be so hard on the Jets fanbase. Aside from the Parcells era there were few times when casual fans jumped on the bandwagon. Some of us have stuck with this team through four decades with zero Superbowl appearances. There were so many times (too many to count) where this team tantalized fans with possibilities of what could be only to have us all watch it crash and burn. The one time we had our hall of fame coach lined up for the next decade to come he bolted for a division rival to bring the glory to that team and to rub our noses in it at every opportunity. We didn't trade up for the third overall draft pick last year, we earned it through the misery of loss after loss on the field. One shiny new draft pick and a couple free agents are nice but to criticize the fans of this cursed franchise for being skeptical is just not right.
Jachai Polite is the unpolished gem that turned this otherwise mediocre draft into one of the better ones in recent memory.
