While some do, it’s hard to fuck up a top 10 pick. You show your true drafting chops with what you do beyond the top 10. As it pertains to the draft all Mac has proven is that he won’t f*ck a top 10 pick which makes him a decent but not great GM.
Mac's first draft was with Tanny's Scouting Dept. and he had only been on the job for a couple of months. In addition Woody, never allowed Mac to do a rebuild from scratch. Chris Johnson finally allowed Mac to do that last year. There's a difference in how one drafts depending upon whether one is tearing things down and starting over and when one is having to try to do a competitive rebuild, i.e., win now, but upgrade the talent. Saying that players fell to Mac and that he was lucky is flat out stupid. The Jets have had plenty of GMs who passed on top talent to take someone else that they though was better. Especially with the lack of depth and all the holes the Jets have had, Mac could have sought to trade down and eschewed taking Williams or Adams. He could have reached for a player at a position of greater need. He could have traded up for different players. It takes knowledge, skill, balls and patience to wait and let the draft come to you and take the BPA. I swear some of you have zero understanding of the game. Could his drafts have been better? Yes, but they also could have been a lot worse.
Kurt, there is no such thing and you know it. Only a very small handful of GMs have ever left one team and been hired by another one. Usually they are fired and never get another chance in the NFL. It's frustrating, but just the way it is.
You're spot on in regards to Williams, but Mac cannot help that Devin Smith, Mauldin and Petty were terrible picks is silly imo at least in terms of trying to blame Mac. Again, he had only been in the job a couple of months, and had to use the same Scouting Dept. that Idzik, Tanny and maybe even Bradway had used with the exception of one or two changes during that time. Mac had no idea that Smith would stay injured practically his entire Jet career. He took a gamble on Mauldin in the 3rd round trying to address the pass rush. Mauldin has also had injury problems, again something Mac couldn't predict or help. Petty was a developmental prospect at QB. LOTS of those don't work out.
danielle hunter, 3rd round played the same position as mauldin, went a few picks after, and is a pro bowl caliber player
It was a weak draft. Many of the OL who are camp cuts this year were in that draft, and some were on their 2nd team already. Yes he did miss some players, but even so, that's a bit of cherry picking. There were a lot of other bad players that he could have drafted as well, and again he had only been on the job a couple of months, and had to use the same old Jets Scouting Dept. that gave us so many great drafts with Idzik, Tanny and Bradway. Johnson kind of came out of nowhere. He wasn't that highly rated in the draft and both Tevin Coleman and Duke Johnson were drafted ahead of him, so lots of GMs missed on Johnson. Ajayi had bone-on-bone and I never thought he'd last even one season in the NFL, much less be as good as he has been. Even so, he was drafted before the Jets picked in the 5th round due to trading up for Petty. I liked Lockett and Crowder a lot in that draft and was disappointed that Mac didn't draft either. Lockett was drafted in the 3rd round way before the Jets pick. Montgomery was seen only as a WR, and he did little to nothing with GB until they switched him to RB. Crowder would have been a better pick than Petty, but Duke hasn't exactly been a football powerhouse.
I was mostly just pointing out that it was a weak draft and that there were not that many better options for Mac to choose in general.
Stupid? Having 1 player stick from a draft is shit. And his drafts after that haven’t been much better. Examine the facts rather than call people stupid
Drafting a talent is one thing, developing him is another. I think that the Jets have been even worse at player development than they have been at drafting, and that part of the equation is not on the GM.
At his best Mack can win his team a couple games a season. He isn't going to make a bad team into a contender. To become a contender we have to keep our picks and start hitting on them. So yeah if Mac continues to draft this badly, we'd have been better off with Mack. But that doesn't mean giving up 2 first rounders and 23.5M a season for Mack is the right move.
You guys are too kind. If you want to give Mac a pass on his first draft so be it that said then the jury is still out on his latest , but the guy reached badly for Hackenberg and drafted this guy way earlier than anyone here would have but again we don't get paid to make the picks he does. He also took Lee in that same draft who some of you guys still defend which throws objectivity out the window. Lets look at last years draft , the 2 safeties ok I will bite but did he need to draft 2 other guys in the secondary in that same draft ? How are those WRs looking from that same draft last year ? And no O lineman drafted but 4 DB's that we scream for every draft day ? Hows he done finding us an outside pass rusher the other 3 years since we are throwing out year 1? I will agree to disagree with you guys who try and defend him .Bowels lost me 2 years ago and Mac is on his way, I hope and pray they both prove me wrong but I don't see it not yet anyways
I KNOW the facts. You obviously don't. You act like drafts happen in a vacuum and there are no circumstances that affect drafts. Your post was stupid. I stand by that. Read my other posts in the thread. Maybe you'll learn something. There are some valid criticisms regarding his drafts that one can make, but just generally trashing them all is stupid and shows little in the way of logical thinking or analysis.
That’s not true. When picking top 10, I could make a good pick just from reading the friggin’ paper. (Granted he didn’t screw it up and reach, but still) The real talent is 2-6. Mac has shown very little results in that area. Maye I suppose, beyond that...nada.
