This is a great signing. Thomas has been playing OLB like it is supposed to be played and it is his first year in the position after playing DE for who knows how long. The contract size seems big, but it isn't at all. 9 up front, so that leaves 16 over 5 years in salary. So he'll count less than 6 million every year vs. the cap and if it is backloaded, it could be even less.
I like the idea of keeping players on the team, building familiarity and consistency. Rapid turnover in personnel never pays off - stability does.
I don't think thats what it means. OLB will still be adressed (whether it's Woodley, Spencer, et al). Parcells uses 2 pretty good pass rushing OLBs in Ware and Greg Ellis and I can see Mangini doing that and moving Hobson to ILB. Can you imagine Woodley, Hobson, Vilma & Thomas at Linebacker? That would be pretty solid.
It would, and the thing is, Barton is playing some pretty good ball himself right now. We could potentially have a very deep LB unit going into next season.
Woodley or Briggs opposite Thomas would put the Jets over the top. I think it is also obvious that we need a big possesion receiver as well.
That's too much money. He's in a contract year and giving him the full value of that year when he's been such a non-impact player in the past is a mistake. And 5 million per is more compensation than even the current year suggests he's worth. Giving Tannenbaum the benefit of the doubt it looks like he's decided either: a) Thomas is ready to take another step up next season and play better than he has this year or b) the money market has changed significantly with the new CBA and 5 million a year is what totally average players will be making at OLB moving forward. In either of those two cases this would be a good signing. As it is I don't like it. And this is the first major move the new regime has made that I am not on board with.
I didn't like BT since the day he was drafted (mainly because I wanted Ed Reed instead), and I still don't like him now. He's definitely improved from the worthless crap he was in the prior seasons, but does he really deserve a contract extension for that?
I agree that initially on paper the money sounds a little high. BUT, if you look at the guaranteed money, $9 mil over 5 years, it is not that bad at all. Additionally, it appears that from the reports the $25 mil with $9 mil guaranteed is the maximum value of the contract, with all incentives met. I don't think that we can really say that this is an overpay without seeing the breakdown of the contract. For example, it is possible that year 5 has a large roster bonus that will never be realized. I trust Tannenbaum and Mangini on this one, until I get more information.
lol he sucks, he has the most sacks on the team. Lol he sucks, hes playing great in run support. LOL tangini man boobs ur terrible he sucks.
I really like the move. Thomas has been making an impact in all phases, run defense, pass defense and help defense. His versatility is key to our 3-4. I think this is a great move.
put me on the list of a thomas doubter since he was drafted...... it didn't take long for me and a few others to realize that his best position would be in a 3-4, a poor mans willie mcginest type.....unfortunately herm and co didn't see it that way and he wallowed away for the first few years. anyway - if he is surrounded by decent talent than i am all in favor of the extension. however, this should NOT preclude the jets from upgrading the OLB position next spring. i am sure it is cap friendly and will allow the jets will be active in upgrading several defensive front seven positions this offseason. jil
Great move by the Jets. He is having an extremely good season and will be improved next year. He is a perfect 3-4 OLB and has been one of the best Jets players on D. He is alos the most underrated and underappreciated Jet by far. Two years ago, when the most overrated Jet ever went down, the Jets D did not have any dropoff with BT. Now he is in a better position at a natural position for him. He would have gotten pretty big money in free agency in the offseason.
My feelings EXACTLY. Give him a possible deal this offseason after he completes a whole season, not 11 games. Again, i'll repeat that my liking would of been to land Adalius Thomas this offseason if B-More didn't keep him. And if B-More kept Adalius, then i'd be open to POSSIBLY bringing back Bryan Thomas, but I still feel he can be upgraded. I may not like the guy, but this is stupid. He has CLEARLY done well in the new scheme, he has surprised every Jets fan with his good play at OLB. I'm just saying 11 games of good football does not merit you a 5 year deal worth $25 mil including $9 mil up-front, i'm sorry. I hope he can keep playing like he is, really. But at this point and time, i'm very skeptical of him getting this deal.
I thought we signed Ramsey for another year? I think a lot of the guys on this list are going to be gone next year. Jones DUI makes me wonder if Mangini is going to keep him on the roster next year.
