I really want to hear the organization say the QB spot will be an open competition, then, prove it at TC. No lip service. Saying McCown is the starter at this point is crazy.

I'd be ok with that. He's already mentioned wanting to be a coach

    Exactly, high reward/low risk.

Now hopefully if he does win out in TC and regains form, they are throwing a 2nd year team option on that contract. If he doesn't beat out McCown, it doesn't hurt anything.

Now we all know, it's pretty impossible to have an even 3 man race. Especially with Bowles at the helm! This is going to be the most interesting thing to me, how they actually handle a competition.

It's not crazy. McCown played pretty damn well last year and earned the right to be the starter this year. Unless somehow Allen/Rosen/Mayfield/Darnold absolutely lights up training camp you roll with McCown

Today may have broken the board. I swear some folks sound like they want to watch Hackenball come the fall.

Let's chill out a bit. No one but the Vikings know what Teddy was capable of doing. All Vikes fans' impressions of the young man seem to be very positive. They note that Teddy was asked to run two offensive schemes depending upon whether AP was in the game (AP would run predominantly out of the i).

We don't know what Bridgewater will be like post-injury and we don't know either what Bates' scheme will be like or how he'll adapt to it. The league certainly like Bridgewater's personality and intellect, but didn't like him physically (as the presumed 5M/yr K shows). This is all to say that Jets fans should keep an open mind about Bridgewater. If it works out, great. If not, oh well. Unless you're a Bot Petty or Hackenbot, there absolutely no downsides!

    Relax!

But what if he clearly gets outplayed in TC?

There’s no downside to Signing Bridgewater. I don’t get the hate. He’s proven better the 2/3 QB’s on the roster.

    All valid points.

If Bates sticks to the west coast offense and doesn't stray too far away from what they did last season, then Bridgewater fits perfectly. At Louisville, he dinked and dunked all the way down the field. I don't think Bates is going to drastically transform the offense for continuity's sake.

I watched some of his practice footage earlier on youtube, and he looked pretty fluid moving around. Albeit, he was wearing an enormous knee brace. It's worth keeping in mind that they pulled his option last May, so that was before he was cleared to play. However, I do share skepticism about his overall rehabilitation.

I agree. Pure speculation here, but it seems like they are preparing for Mayfield. Teddy and McCown are strong leadership / character guys, which will be fully needed taking on a personality like Baker. It might just be wishful thinking, however.

Any word on a 2nd year team option on Bridgewater?

I don't see how you can sign him, give him a legit shot at starting, and not have a team option for the second year in case he does come back healthy and lights it up. It allows more patience for whatever QB you might draft, and - if you get a young QB who turns out to have all the signs of being a legit superstar - you potentially have a healthy and proven Bridgewater as an asset to flip for a pick, or even as a back-up QB.

Not having a team option leaves the potential for a similar situation as there was with Fitz after his first season with the Jets.

Mac didn't have a chance to draft Bridgewater. That was Idzik.

It probably means the Jets won't be drafting a QB in the 1st round, because I doubt any of the top 4 make it to #6, and it's not in Mac's nature, nor does it sound like he'll be trading up to get the QB they want.

Are you sure it wasn't something like, "Hack couldn't hit a trash compactor from 3 feet away." or "His throwing motion belongs in a trash compactor?" ;)

they are not drafting a qb round one. Teddy is their insurance so Todd can get fitzpatrick or chubb
