Mac gonna have to really hit on this draft in order to have any future. So far, outside of Robbie and Maye the majority of impact players were obvious selections at that time. At best he's a mediocre GM, just as Bowles has been a mediocre HC. Hopefully Mac and Bowles put together a solid plan. They will need to work together more then ever.
I couldn't disagree more. For one thing, I highly doubt that Mac has failed to communicate his vision for the team. No GM is gonna draft a young QB and then not want him/them developed. It's glaringly apparent to me that Mac and Bowles don't see eye-to-eye, and with the inane org chart they have, it's a stalemate. Neither Woody nor Chris Johnson evidently have enough knowledge or intelligence to see that the situation is untenable, and is only going to result in failure. Bowles should be fired, Mac put in total charge of the team and allowed to hire his own HC. Then he would have complete control over the development of the young QB(s), and would ultimately have control over the offensive and defensive philosophies and how the team plays. As it is, he has zero control except over the draft and FA.
Seriously, the things that happened this season has scrambled some brains on this board, I have read some outrageous things / theories. I never even said Petty played great, but I guess just like lighting it up against preseason stringers, making throws against a prevent defense with no way to win is the definition of playing great.
You’re forgetting his come back win against the 9ers last year. The greatest accomplishment since al bundy scores 4 tds for Polk high
Did he not lead them downfield to score a TD at the end? Maybe he didn't resemble Johnny Unitas, but he DID complete some nice long passes...or don't they count because "Petty sucks"?
The game was out of reach by then. He had 2 quarters while the defense kept the Saints offense at bay with no points. You need to make plays when the game is within reach, not at the end of games when the game was already decided. 2 mins left down 2 scores. but ... Why you are defending Petty so much? would you rather go 2014 Geno Smith route and pass on a QB in the draft for Petty? Is that what you want? The guy is no good, I wish the best for him, but he's not the guy that will lead the jets to a trophy
I agree. Mac hasn't drafted well but has hit on some free agents. I hope he does a better job this year. He and Bowles are out of excuses. Woody's not here to meddle , there is QB and O line talent in the draft. Plenty of QB options should be available in Free Agency, and there should be in excess of $100 million dollars in cap space. They have ever opportunity to solidify the team and make strides next season. I expect both will return. Both need to make major improvements or should be gone after the 2018 season.
Hell no, I don't want to pass on a QB this draft! Maybe you haven't read my posts, but I've been ALL about drafting a QB instead of signing Cousins or some other vet. My "defense" of Petty is really based on the fact that he hasn't been given a fair shot to prove anything. I know , I know we completely disagree on that point, but how you can claim that not allowing a QB to take regular snaps with the starters, and then throw him cold into a game constitutes "being given a chance is beyond me. From what I have seen he looks like he could be a backup, and maybe with time and game experience, a bridge QB, but I doubt he'll ever be an above average QB let alone a FQB. Beyond that I think Macc & Bowles have screwed up the QB situation royally. Either Petty has some ability, in which case Bowles hasn't given him the chance to develop it, or he has no ability, in which case Macc should've drafted a QB this past draft. Beyond all that, it's seems clear that Macc and Bowles aren't on the same page. I don't know why you continue to defend Bowles so much, given his actual track record.
You're right, but here's the thing: If you let Macc and Bowles have another shot this year and they blow it, it's not like you can just hit "reset" in 2019 with lots of cap space and draft picks. The Jets might be set another 3, 4, or 5 years (or more) back in the hole. OTOH, if there are better options available, fire Macc and Bowles and let the better options roll the dice.
Absolutely right, how quickly we forget this asshole had 80M to spend when he took over and look at what he did with it. What makes anybody think he won't do the same this time around?
Has Mac "earned" the right to hire his own coach? It's not like he handed Bowles a flawless roster that Bowles proceeded to waste.
If they trade up for a QB and miss, I agree with you that we will be set back 3,4,5 years . I don't think Mac is going to go out on a spending spree in free agency and there will be plenty of money carried over to 2019. We know Mac's draft strategy. BPA. Safe picks, character guys so he will get some decent players. If there's a new GM in 19, he will have plenty of cap space and draft picks, plus the roster won't be bare like after Idzick. Firing now means a whole new system , new philosophy, the new GM could go all in in free agency have 2 years of success and then we are right back into the usual cycle. Can't extend young guys, vet FAs aging out. We are in year 1 of a true rebuild, long over due. We're going to have to weather the storm. I think there is a difference between this year's 5-11 and last year's 5-11 record. Last year we had vets who should have performed much better, this year alot of young kids who were expected to perform much worse. It gives a glimmer of hope that Mac is on the right track. I guess we will know around this time next year but either way, I hope we're discussing potential playoff match ups vs draft picks. But just in case, here is my way to early 2019 mock.....
Cousins could have a Brees like impact for the Jets. But Jets need to consider all of the available options. To me, the Jets need to evaluate all of their choices. I think Petty got a fair shot, he cannot do the basic of QBing on the field. The coaching staff must develop the QB, but at the same time the fundamentals, the QB has to practice and continue to get better not only on the field but on their own time and Petty looks like the same QB, 3 years ago. There's a reason he was a 4th round pick. They took a shot and he's no good, for that you should point the finger at Mac, but at the same time you can't blame him for taking a shot on him in the 4th round. You should be more disappointed by the Hack selection if anything. I am very disappointed in that selection. No reason to place your blame at Bowles for this. He has handled this correctly. Petty and Hack both had their shots and both did not get better. McCown outplayed them despite not playing in like 2 preseason games. Therefore they should not start, that is a disservice to any other players on that team that compete for roster spots. That's how you lose a locker room. I think I am more-so defending this regime and I want this regime to stay together another year. I think Bowles improved as a coach and I think he can continue to do so. The team is competitive, but the team needs talent. I bring up the comparisons to Ron Rivera, and I think I see some parallels here. Ron wasn't always the best coach, but continued to improve year in and year out. I see the same in Bowles. I am giving them both another year. Mac can find gems via trade and such, but he has to hit on a QB. The Hack selection does not give me confidence.
He has 3 more seasons to reach the cap floor this time not 3 months like his first year and Woody isn't here to dictate what Free agents to sign. If anything, i have a feeling fans are going to be disappointed that Mac didn't spend more after the upcoming free agency period.
IMO, Mac has one more chance to get the longterm QB this team desperately needs. Whether it's via the draft or free agency, makes no difference to me. My personal choice is Cousins and go BPA with first 3 picks on CB, LT and pass rusher - whatever the order. He's been given 2 chances already, he doesn't deserve a 4th if he blows this one...
I see your point, and you may well be right, but I still disagree that "Petty got his shot". You say it's on the player to work to improve and develop, and that's absolutely true, but do we know he didn't try? But along with that is the requirement that he get opportunities to put into practice in real life situations, what he's learned. Working out with a "QB guru", and practicing with your old college buddies and some guys in the off season, but it's not game situations, and form what I see that's where he's struggled. Although he has shown improvement once he shook off the rust. I get not wanting to "rinse and repeat" and start over with a new regime, but dammit, I've been watching this team for 55+ years and I don't see anything from Macc and Bowles that shows me they "get it". As I've said before, and just today in another thread, the real problem is that neither Hess nor Woody have stated what the NY Jets look like, what their identity is, and so we continue to jump from idea to idea with no continuity. I think that has to happen before any lasting progress can be made.
If a QB has a great arm, is very athletic and is drafted by an NFL team, they don't arrive bad. They are quite the opposite, very gifted if they make it to the NFL and have successful college careers. A coach, on the other hand, can easily ruin a players confidence by confusing them with their systems, not allowing them to do what they do best (like not throwing down the field more with Petty). The coaching staff is doing a miserable job with these kids. I do think that if Petty started the season he would be markedly better by now. But no, we needed to win some games to keep us in QB purgatory. If the game slowed down for Petty, then they would have a nice young option. If not, they could have played Hack. If either didn't work out they would be in position to grab Rosen or Darnold. Instead we needed to use a 38 year old QB so the coach could keep his job without thinking about the future at all. Young QBs need game experience, but with the Jets they aren't even getting any practice reps with the starters. I'm sick and tired of coaches coming in here and making the QBs on the roster adapt to them instead of the other way around. So many people on this board give the coaches way too much credit.
The Saints scored early very easily and ended up with 31 points. Our D is not even in the top 20. They made a few great plays to cause turnovers, but if the Saints really needed points at the end of the game Brees would have easily gotten them.
