Perhaps the Jets are in a 1980 scenario where the Raiders took Jim Plunkett off the scrap heap and went on to beat the Eagles in the Super Bowl..strange things can happen you know

I gotta say, though, the Bubby Bristeresque faux pas by McCown - faux pass, whatever - oh, my mein Gott, here we go. The instant, crushing pressure behind my eyeballs, the chest pains, the inflammatory response throughout my entire system. I was tempted to buy something really disgusting from the crap concessions to hasten my death. As in the most disgusting thing possible. I'm a healthy eater, but I dunno, the smell from those hideous nachos with fake cheese emanating from the person seated next to me started to help me match the chunks that were rising in my throat. It was very inspiring, but in the end I decided to just sit there and suffer like a good disavowed lapsed Catholic.

So, yeah, I yelled out, "The power of Christ compels you!" And the Jets won. You can thank me now.

Good on you. I considered putting $20 down for shits and giggles, considering the odds.

So I read the Bears are benching Glennon. So I decided to look at the QB stats and it turns out Glennon is ranked 1 place higher than McCown. Then I looked at the Bears' schedule so far: Falcons, Bucs, Steelers (W) and Packers. We would've been 0-4 with that schedule most probably. Our schedule so far made McCown look good. Now, I know Trubisky is probably a better prospect than Petty or Hack, but people are questioning his readiness to run an offense.

So the question presents itself: why is Chicago benching their veteran and putting in an inexperienced QB this early and we're not? Because we needed 2, 3 wins for morale purposes against shitty teams? And the Bears don't seem to care that their schedule was hard on Glennon, they're not interested in starting Glennon so they can get wins against weaker teams, while we sing praises to McCown who's had a significantly easier schedule. They probably won't win another game until week 13, they're in a similar situation as we are so it's interesting to observe.

Pretty terrible comparison. I did not see this post til now. Glennon has been terrible and McCown has played pretty well. That is why they are making a change and the Jets are not. Also, the Bears schedule you listed has far worse defenses than the ones McCown has played. The Jets schedule seems easy to you because the Jets WON the games. Many considered Miami and Jacksonville good teams. Cleveland actually did play good yesterday too. The Bears are (1-3), the Jets are (2-2) at your post, (3-2) now. Also, Trubisky is the #2 overall pick. He should play if he is able to. The Jets, meanwhile, have a 4th Round QB in Petty and a 2nd Round QB in Hackenberg. Very different situations. I would like to see Petty or Hack get in, but McCown has earned his starts.

Glennon was terrible but their offense is ranked at 25, Jets at 27 which somehow means McCown is redeemed. I really don't know anyone who would argue that BIlls/Jags/Dolphins/Browns is tougher than Steelers/Bucs/Packers/Minnesota. You are right, McCown did face slightly tougher defenses when all stats are considered. When defensive stats of opponents and offensive stats of their teams are compared, Glennon and McCown are basically equal. But again, Glennon is somehow terrible, McCown is a clear starter.

As for Cleveland, Hogan had more passing yards than McCown. Cleveland had 420 yards in total, Jets 212. 4/12 third down conversions Jets. And those stats are against the literal laughing stock of the league, you can chalk that win up to the defense. If it weren't for that unlikely field goal and an interception, we would've been having a different conversation. Against the Jags he nearly cost us the game with his passing on 3rd down near the end of the fourth and I would say he can take little or no credit for those huge rushing TDs that happened.

That #2 pick has not played an NFL game yet and many are doubting this ability to run an offense at this point, the Bears are taking a huge risk.

I do like McCown as a mentor, but he is mediocre on the field and seems to be wearing down late in games. It's likely McCown hands over the reigns to somebody in 3-4 weeks... unless of course they keep winning, but based on the upcoming schedule it's unlikely. I hate being that guy, but even at 3-2, it's highly unlikely the Jets win more than 6 games total this year, but any given Sunday.

I'm confused. What is your point then? I thought you were saying the Jets should give Petty or Hackenberg a chance. Now you are saying the Bears are taking a huge risk. I agree you should not put a QB on the field if he is not ready. That is why I am fine with McCown and Glennon starting. Time will tell if the teams made the right moves.

I got into a few arguments about McCown being a good mentor. The claim was that he couldn't be a good mentor because he had a losing record. Mentoring is about work ethic and attitude, and Josh McCown embodies both of those attributes. Some of the best coaches were average or mediocre players. Some of the worst coaches are hall of famers.

The Browns wanted to hire McCown as a mentor to Kizer. That says a lot about a guy who won a single game in Cleveland.

especially when it won't amount to anything. Winning with McCown does nothing for the future of the team except keeps them in the dark about what they really need at the Qb position going forward. This is of course assuming that a 39year old Josh McCown isn't the future. Now if he is the future, that's an entirely different conversation. I remember when people were thrilled when Fitz won. In the big picture, it didn't amount to a damn thing except another wasted year in the careers of Petty and Hacc. Then the real Fitz showed up and it turned into 2 wasted years in their careers.

So it goes with the Jets...

Why would any sane young college QB want to come to the Jets is a mystery akin to what happened to Flight 19.

It's pretty simple, their thinking of the future and Mitchell is the future. Let him go through growing pains now and in 3 years they will know if he is the answer.

I bet they select a QB in the middle rounds next year as well.

Under ordinary circumstances I wouldn't care about the Jets winning games. Tanking isn't normally a good strategy because teams aren't good enough at evaluating QBs to know which ones are going to succeed in the NFL; mid to late first rounders don't do significantly worse than top picks. Also by tanking you screw up the development of your team, and by the time you build a good roster your QB's rookie contract has expired and you have to pay him big money.

OTOH the Jets are so bad at picking QBs our best bet might be to get the top pick and take the consensus best QB, so the decisions of whether to take a QB and which one to take are made for us.

Any sane college QB wouldn't feel worse about going to the Jets than any other dysfunctional team, and the teams picking QBs atop the draft are usually dysfunctional.

apples and oranges. 1st off they are 1-3 and pretty much out of contention. the jets are 3-2 tied for 1st in the division. 2ndly mitchell was the 2nd overall pick in the draft and top QB in the draft. we have a 2nd rounder from last year and a 4th rounder from 2 years ago. the 4th rounder had a few starts and was pretty unimpressive already. We also don't know how micthell showed in practice and such. he may be outplaying glennon. hell in preseason mitchell did great, petty and hack not so much. Mtichell had 0 INTs in preseason and 3 TDs and 68% completions. hack was 57% 2 TDs 2 INTs. Petty faied better at 67% 3TDs 1 INT but again we seen him last year and he still makes poor desisions and is a 1 read QB. McCown while physically limited, is a smarter QB who makes fewer mistakes and reads the field well.

Before the season I said that Josh McCown was a better player than his stats may indicate.

I have really found another level of appreciation for the guy through the first 5 games, he's cagey, tough, his leadership skills are off the charts, and he gets by and squeezes every last bit of talent that he has every second he's on the field. He's incredibly inspirational because of all of this, and the Jets have the best player at the position playing giving them not only an opportunity to win but in addition, the confidence to allow the team to believe they can stay competitive even in losing.

If I were the Jets I would sign him to a 10-year deal that becomes activated once he retires eventually. I want this guy in the organization working with QB's when he's done playing. At the very least, I believe if Josh McCown ever wants to coach at the college or pro level he has a future there. Josh is one gutty SOB.

He really avoids throwing the ball unless the WR is open which is why his completion % is so high. Actually, this last game I thought that changed. He threw balls he had no business throwing. The Jets should abandon the WR screens and passes to the flat. They are not working and often are causing turnovers. I though McCown looked his best in play-action and looking downfield. ASJ should be utilized more and I really liked the screen pass to McGuire even though he tripped up.

    What a crap post.

N.Y would be 0-4 with Chicago's schedule? I'll agree to disagree because A.) I live in the Tampa Bay area and the Buccaneers are so overrated it's not even funny. "Contenders" my ass they won't even sniff the playoffs & B.) N.Y beat the same Jaguars team who just destroyed & embarrassed the Steelers.

    "0-4" my ass.

And stop pretending that Glennon has played & performed on McCown's level of this year. Glennon has a completion percentage of 66.4 with a QB rating of only 76.9 while McCown has a completion percentage of 71.4 & a QB rating of 90.5.

Horrible comparison. If the Jets were 1-4 we might've seen McCown benched too. But we're not; we're 3-2 and tied for 1st place with an old veteran giving our team a chance. The same couldn't be said for overrated Glennon.
