This is interesting... he led the Baylor offense in receptions (80+), yards (1,000+) and TDs (10+) and had a 3rd/4th round grade but went undrafted due to concerns about his size. He's very much a YAC guy and not that much of a true receiver. He seems like a very good fit for this offense, but you have to wonder why the Niners cut him after one rookie mini-camp.
WR's are vital to modern NFL success. Hell look at what the Browns did last year in the draft. Who knows if this guy is anything..but hey..if they liked him coming out...just one more poker in a talented pool of young guys. let the competition sort it out. Worked w. Robbie Anderson last year
Starting to get the sense Mac's philosophy regarding OL extends to the receivers as well. We seem committed to building/developing a deep corps with lower round/udfa prospects. It certainly seems to be an area of focus based on this offseason and last year's. Don't know anything about this guy, but more competition between the youngsters can't hurt.
What's strange is the 9ers gave him a big signing bonus and then cut him after their minicamp. He had to have made a very bad impression for that to have happened. My guess is he didn't come ready to put in the work.
OL I think is more about finding guys you can develop. If you bring enough big strong guys w. good feet & teach them proper technique a few are bound to stick. WR is partially the same like you alluded to. But also...there is an abundance of young talent at the position coming out of college...likely a byproduct of the popularity of the game on lower levels among elite athletes as well as the emergence of the spread offense in the college ranks. We saw last year w. Anderson & even Peake who we took very late. There are plenty of high potential wide outs w. minor baggage/setbacks be it medical or otherwise available in the very late rounds as well as UDFA. Mac is wise to target guys who fit the system..churn em & burn em to see who sticks.
Without knowing the reasons the Niners cut him, I think the Jets had some good background on Cannon from Bryce Petty and are rolling the dice. Petty and Cannon connected on ALOT of deep passes when they played together at Baylor. Thinking the Jets wanted some Anderson insurance.
Wait.. you mean Petty is still on the roster???? I thought he sucked so badly that they released him already.
I just knew the Jets were going to claim him.Prob did it for Petty, One trick pony to stretch the field. Plays really fast but route tree looks like a palm tree. I hear the 9ers cut him due to attitude apparently he was prob being diva and Lynch wants a blue collar lunch pail and hard hat type of team.
We also picked up WR-Deshon Fox, who played the last 2 seasons on Seattle. More bodies should cause intense competition. And maybe one or two of them will stick.
$5000 signing bonus, the other $40K is a roster bonus which the Jets are on the hook for . Not sure the date of the roster bonus.
I saw this also .. “From what I saw at Friday minicamp, Cannon didn’t show much urgency or hustle … but could be more reasons he got cut,” Inman posted on Twitter. -Mike Inman The kid has talent for sure and was a projected 4th rounder by NFL.com .. there could be a dozen reasons for the draft drop and then the cut. I like that we are looking at all options at our disposal .. I grew to like the WRs we drafted late and added through UDFA last year, but, an upgrade is an upgrade. We could also use talent on Special Teams. Jalin Marshal probably opened up another spot by his own doing .. I wouldn't be surprised if by the end of the preseason games .. we have a handful of new special teams, depth and role players. This was a deep draft and a lot of that talent spilled out into the UDFA market. Edit- if I were healthy, not drafted, had a successful College Career and out to prove I could play .. I definitely would target the Rebuilding/Talent-Lacking/Teams with Poor Records first. I don't know what the agents of some of these prosepects are thinking. Are they being treated as JAGs the way a Public Defender does the many clients on his or her case load?! For example, How many times have we seen a LB prospect try out for a team loaded with LB talent and good Special Teams? I can see why the WRs are trying out for the Jets .. I mean I'm sure plenty of them say to themselves, "I'm better than Cherone Peake and Jalin Marshall .. if they made it, I definitely can .. in fact, I can take one of their roster spots!" I'm also surprised by the fact, considering how deep this draft was, that we didn't sign more prospects or at least have them tryout, and at more of a variety(positions). If you look at transactions across the league, some teams practically signed a roster full on top of the tryouts. Perhaps some agents had their favorites and/or we just got there too late. There's still plenty of offseason to go and then the preseason to make moves. Lets Go!
