OK OK, i know you all don't agree. but I'm going to explain why we should keep him for this year. Right now, according to reports his value is a 4th rounder due to off filed issues and poor performance last year. way too little return for a player of his caliber. 8 mil this year isn't going to kill us. we aren't going anywhere and don't really need to sign any more free agents. So with that said, by keeping richardson this season if we can keep him in line and he plays like he's capable of (which he should since he's looking for a big pay day) we can re-establish his value and next year either hit him with an RFA tender or franchise tag so he can't just walk and in return get a 1st or 2nd rounder out of the deal with a sign and trade or if we tender him let other teams sign him and get the pick in return. Trading him for a 4th while we are rebuilding doesn't do us any good in the long run
I think the best argument for keeping Richardson is that he is in a contract year and will be motivated. I just don't want to see him playing linebacker anymore. I also hope they play more 3/4 next year as well. I don't think the 4-3 suits our personnel that well.
Mo Wilk LE, Leo Williams NT, Sheldon Richardson 3T, Lorenzo Mauldin RE Might work well. RE would be the weak spot, the other 3 would all be strong.
Bowles needs to do a better job of moving the players in and out of the defensive line scheme. Everyone should get a chance to eat.
I like Mo playing [1 technique] NT with Leonard Williams being the 3T much better. The nose tackle in the 4 man front, main mission is to stop the run and opens up the opportunity for others to succeed. Leonard Williams is the best passer rusher out of the 3, I truly believe it. He could be a 10 sack a season guy in his prime. We need more speed on the outside to compliment the interior. In the mean-time, you switch around Mo, Leo and in the NT role, and whoever is in the other spot can work with Richardson based off match-up. LE is the last option and I think Sheldon can do that as he's got some pursuit to him
It's sad how badly McCagnan butchered and mishandled our D-line. We could have had the best 3-4 d-line in football with an extra $18M per year cap space. Instead we have the Land of the Mis-Fit Toys
Really, it does not take a genius to know that Sheldon should line up as close to the opposing QB as possible. Todd, are you listening?
Disagree. Leo would be a misfit at 3T. He's long and rangy, and would be too big of a target to block inside. Sheldon would be a natural. He's compact, quick, has a hyper motor and gets penetration at will. But he's still instructive as hell against the run. He's like Warren Sapp 2.0 That's what you want at the 3T spot. As far as the thread goes, I don't like wasting either Mo or Leonard at NT. They have too much versatility to pin them down into constant double teams. We have too many good 3-4 DLs and only one fits well in a 4-3. And he's basically gone.
I don't like Sheldon Richardson at all. I'll take that 4th happily. I wonder when the Jets will actually draft/sign people that fans can actually like?
Cowboys? Jerry Jones has to want one of our DT's. He isn't going to get one of the prime DT's out of the draft and he needs a penetrator who can stop the run for his 4-3 as a missing piece in his defense atm.
I was waiting for the day for someone to finally mention why this wouldn't work. In terms of player comparison. Reggie White was 6'5 300 pounds and dominated as a 3 technique on certain plays; also so did Suh with his days in Detroit. You don't believe both were / are long and rangy? Reggie White, a far better player then Warren Sapp, he isn't the only great pass-rusher in NFL history to take an example from. Leonard Williams has a hyper motor and also gets penetration at all, plus he's got the pass rush moves to boot. He's actually not as big as Suh and Reggie White, I think both of those guys had close to 5-10 extra pounds on them in comparison to Leonard. Of course, you move the players around Leonard playing 3 tech isn't permanent, but to say he can't play it I think isn't true at all. In a base defense, Mo can play 1 NT technique, Mo makes a living off double teams, excels in the run game and he is the glue guy that made players around him better. Again, Mo and Leonard don't play in those roles full time, maybe 40% of the time or so. Switch them around. That's the key and find the mismatch. Leonard played 3 tech in college. Trade Sheldon away and get more speed on the outside. It's not a full on 4-3, in the 3-4, Leonard runs the 5 tech.
Playing the 3T against PAC 12 offensive lineman isn't close to comparable in the NFL, yeah he has a great motor but his burst isn't nearly what it'd need to be to shoot that gap consistently. That's what made Sapp so good in that spot. And comparing Leo to Reggie Williams and Suh at this point is getting WAY ahead of yourself. Mo can play every technique on the line well, but if you don't find mismatches and out him in position to succeed, you're wasting his talent. Just because a player can man a position competently doesn't mean you SHOULD play them there. On occasion in a switch, yeah, go for it. But if you're constantly switching them around, you keep them from getting into a rhythm against their man and they get frustrated, that's how Rex Ryan kept shooting himself in the foot with our defense.
I thought Williams played very well in that 3 technique role this season. Especially the first game of the year when we dominated the Bengals. Leonard played inside and Mo played on the outside. Leonard Williams was compared to Reggie WHITE prior to the draft, not saying he will be White or Suh --- however he can play and succeed as an interior primary pass-rusher. I think he's far more talented then Sheldon. That's the key is FINDING the mismatches and exploiting it down after down. They have the versatility to move around, but once that find that match-up they should stick to it. Wilk that day might dominate as the 3 and Leo can be the 1, and vice versa. Honestly, doesn't matter because in a 2 seasons we prob won't have either Mo and Sheldon on the team.
I don't know enough to determine who should play which position, and am enjoying the different POVs between abyzmul and 101, but one thing I DO know is that Bowles and his DC ought to know, and apparently don't. This is the real problem, and I'm at a loss to understand how a guy with Bowles's resume can screw this up? It makes me wonder what else is going on behind the scenes.
richardson is the insurance policy in case mo does not get results this year. if you can trade him for a 1 or 2, great. otherwise, keep him. if he and mo do not perform, get rid of both of them next year.
The Jets need to trade Sheldon Richardson before the draft for the best offer they get.( even if it's only a fifth rounder). It silly to waste 8 plus million when the Jets aren't going anywhere next year.( money they can roll over to next year cap.). No one trading a high pick for Richardson when he's looking at a long suspension with another screw up .( not to mentionlooking for a large payday) . The Jets will have a lot of money to play with , and there is good chance they will be big players in Fa.( Richardson could walk without the Jets getting anything back.
Problem is you have 3 guys who play best as a 3-4 DE. And you also lose a bit of production if any one of them are a NT....they are all capable of doing a solid job but you want that NT to eat space ala how snacks was. Bowles has to do a better job of rotating these 3 in and out and sometimes have them at the same time. They also need a big time outside pass rusher and unless Mauldin improves, that guy isn't on the roster.
No way as best the Jets will get is a fifth rounder. Richardson is coming off a measly 1.5 sacks, facing a long suspension with one More screw up, going into last year of his rookie contract( 8 million is expensive a lot of teams can't fit in their salary cap) , and was a problem in the locker room.( missing team meetings, and fighting with teammates.
