Head coach Todd Bowles has hired Robert Nunn as the Jets' new defensive line coach. Nunn, who is beginning his 18th season as an NFL assistant coach and who has experience with both 4-3 and 3-4 schemes, spent the 2016 season coaching the Cleveland Browns' defensive line. He is familiar with MetLife Stadium, having coached Jason Pierre-Paul, Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora and the Giants' D-line from 2010-15. In those six seasons, among NFL D-lines, the Giants were fifth in sacks (191) and unofficially first in forced fumbles (55), first in pass defenses (98), third in tackles for loss (280) and fourth in QB hits (419). Before the Giants, Nunn was an assistant coach with Tampa Bay (2009), Green Bay (2005-08) and Washington (2003). During his four-year Packers tenure, DE Aaron Kampmann compiled 43.5 sacks and DE Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila added 24 sacks. The last time he was an assistant for an AFC team was with the Dolphins from 2000-2002 and '04. You gotta like this guys experience. If he can get the output the Giants Dline had the Jets will be in business.
18 years and he is still a position coach? what is he doing wrong? color me unimpressed with a guy who can't get off the 2nd rung of the ladder. s.o.j. did i do it right? seriously, like the resume and he has talent to work with.
Sounds like a decent hiring. I am just waiting for the new jets QB coach to be named. THAT coach will be under pressure, working with what the jets have at QB. Reminds me of the jets 1990 draft, their first under then new GM Steinberg. The jets picked Cal QB Troy Taylor in the 4th round--Despite lots of instruction under new coach Coslet and others, Taylor never got off the bench and was soon out of the league. When asked why Taylor didn't make it, despite all the coaching, one executive shrugged "You can't make an atom bomb without uranium."
I like it. Especially him being the d-line coach for the giants for 6 years which was most likely the best unit on the team and a big reason for them winning a championship in 2011.
He was fired by the Packers and the Browns. Did the Giants fire him as well, all I can see is that he left?
This is a shit hire from the looks of it. Then again, we've had blue chip hires not do anything with a giant pile of first round picks, so who gives a fuck.
I don't understand the logic of some Jets fans. They complain that the new OC hasn't got enough experience to do the job. Then they complain that someone who has got plenty of experience to be the DLine coach hasn't progressed in his career. I don't know what Bowles is meant to do sometimes!!
I have to say I think he brought in better coaches than expected. Greene is great as an OLB. Nunn seems solid. Morton is a wildcard but at least he worked under great coaches.
