The Jets just missed an opportunity to really improve themselves - Tom Coughlin just signed as the Jaguars VP of Football Operations. This is exactly the job he should have been offered with the Jets. Woody is an idiot.
Aww come on... He's got history with the Jaguars. It's a pension position. They probably already ordered a convertible couch for his office so he can take an afternoon nap.
Yea dude no way he'd work with us. He'd hear so much much shit for taking a job with the "b" team in ny. He wants to move down south and take cushy retirement job, not be insulted on the back of the post every other month
I agree with the OP,,,at least we should have offered such a VP position as it is a good idea But responders here have correctly pointed out deals are a two way street...your target has to accept I lobby on TGG for experienced an HC and TC was one on my list However its true #1he gets blasted for being a NY turncoat #2 Its Florida and Semi Retirement with a known organization
I predict continued failure for the Jags and that coughlin will need to be reminded of where he is from time to time.
I've posted it a few times...but I'd like to see Mike Lombardi be offered a position in the front office of the Jets. He's got experience and is good with personnel. Plus he's a local guy from Ocean City that has a nice dog.
I don't know if Coughlin is the guy for us in that position, but I agree that a football guy should be in the top Football Operations spot if the coach does not report to the GM.
Coughlin staying home is hardly a surprise. Uprooting at age 60 is one thing, but at age 70, didn't seem likely.
Coughlin is so over rated it isn't even funny. A couple flukey super bowl wins and people put him on a pedestal. Thinking he would somehow magically save the team with a VP position is silly.
It's a culture change though. He has always instilled a culture of accountability with both franchises he's worked for and I think it's going to work down in Florida with a young team that needs guidance. It wouldn't work with the clusterfuck of veterans that don't care that we have, assuming a good amount of them are retained. I don't think this is a cushy retirement job though like some have alluded to. Whether you like him or hate him, he's a hard worker. Don't they say that folks that retire and do nothing often die shortly after? He doesn't strike me as a guy that wants to slow down by any means. I'd hardly ever call two Super Bowl victories 'flukey.' He's 12-7 in the playoffs and has a career .531 winning percentage. He might be a little bit overrated but he's a good football mind and a great coach overall IMO. Not the correct move for the Jets at all though. I would like a VP of football operations at some point if Maccagnan/Bowles fail.
Oh, THAT was the missed opportunity. Thanks for pointing it out. This fucking franchise is a monument to missed opportunities, thinking that not hiring Tom Coughlin as a FO guy even measures up to most of them is a hoot.
lol, Coughlin has already shot down some of Marrone's attempts to hire coaches. Jets FO better step up or the title of Clown College might go down south.
Coughlin and Marrone might be the most overrated combo of all time, and then throw in the inevitable dysfunction those 2 egos will have.... classic Jax..
He's a winner. He won at Boston College, he won at Jax his first time around and helped build the team from scratch, and he won with the Giants. However, don't see him working with The Woodster, ever.
TC has a very good track record against Belicheat too. Not that it would help as a VP but it would as a coach.
I pretty much agree. Bringing in Bowles was supposed to be that culture change for the Jets. Bowles was known as an accountability guy. Since he's been coach, the Jets penalties per game has gone down a good amount, so something is working, even with all the dumb penalties Sheldon takes. The problem is the Jets have a lot of leftovers from the Rex Ryan era and IMO became a bit undisciplined as a result of Rex being lenient on them. Bowles was in over his head. Coughlin was known as an accountability guy as well, but some of those Giants teams seemed to have discipline issues, and made critical mistakes leading to many late season collapses. He did win 2 super bowls, though, so when he was in, he made the most of it.
The first step is to stop blaming things on Rex Ryan...and Rich Kotite, Lou Holtz and Charlie Winner. Bowles is in charge; he owns this pile of shit.
