And I'm supposed to be the darksider here? The Jets spent a 2nd round draft choice on Clemens and you don't think he can do better then a roughly even TD:INT ratio and 150 yards a week?
That pick was spent when everyone had no idea that Chad would make a comeback. The majority of this board thought Chad was done. Don't you remember? But he isn't and Clemens can always be traded.
Who cares about Stats? It is Wins and Losses. Chad has led the team to 5 wins and close losses to the Colts and Patriots. There have only been 2 road games where Chad has come out and played bad.
Not to mention the only game where we got the shit kicked out of us was the Jags game. We went toe to toe with the Pats the first time around, and the freaking Colts. And the Browns game.... Well there's alot of BS from that one still....
no one should eat crow regarding pennington....... its obvious his second injury was not nearly as bad as the first and required a less invasive procedure to correct.... that being said - CP is finally benefitting from a game plan that is somewhat tailored to his style - a thinking mans QB. we have some talent along the oline that is emerging at center and LT plus some steady play from the guard positions - and of course without serious injury. throw in some decent WR play from coles and cotch and the jets should be OK at the QB spot..... HOWEVER - i am not sure how far we can go with pennington with all the chips in the right place. Some plays are awfully slow to develop and he just cannot zip it into tight spots. At times, the jets have to work awful hard just to get a completed pass - something that the top offenses and QB's do with much more ease. now that i have pissed off the chad lovers - do not get too crazy. it is great to see him come back and lead this team that finally won a game it wasn't supposed to win. i give him and the jets all the credit in the world and he will financially reap the benefits of his success this year. i look at CP's success as stability to the QB position that will ultimately change the guard in the next 2-3 years. it gives clemens good bench time for the future. jil
Youth movements LOL!!! If Mangini put Clemens in at this point, the only "Youth Movement" would be Mangini moving up a spot in the unemployment line. Clemens would get KILLED out there right now. Chad is doing a good job. We just beat New England at home for christe sake. Get a grip please. The boy is learning how to be a man right now. Chad is the man. In a few years, if Kellen learns how to be an NFL QB he will be the man. But there is absolutely NO logic in replacing Chad right now. Especially with a rookie. Wake up. How hard is that concept to grasp?
I couldn't agree more with your last sentence. By the time clemens gets his shot he will have matured nicely into a quality top 10 qb. It's things like that that go unnoticed.
Of course. It's perfectly logical to assume that Clemens will morph into a top 10 QB by riding the pine for 2 years. I love the duality of some fans. Clemens is so bad that we couldn't possibly put him on the field now, but if he stands on the sidelines for a couple seasons then he'll be good. Unreal.
No offense directed at you..but all those that question if someone is a Jet fan or not. Being a Jet fan may be accepting Chad as the future qb for the team. Seeing that Chad isnt, doesnt make someone anti-jet. 3rdanddraw believes that Chad isnt the future qb. While I disagree with him about the Jets potential for making the playoffs (not because we are a powerhouse..but because the NFL flat out stinks right now) I think anyone could make a strong case that Chad did what he had to in this game...but this game was won in the trenches..not by lobs going sideways just out of a defenders reach for 5 yards. I completely understand where 3rd is coming from...and although Chad is doing a nice job...he isnt the type of qb that could ever win a shootout type game. If the Jets build a tremendous defensive team..then Chad could be the guy. I cant understand how some dont see his point about Chad being full of limitations at the position.
At this point in time, Chad Pennington gives the Jets the best chance to win. Starting a rookie QB, while meaningful games exist, does not make any sense...unless something happens to Chad. Absent any physical issues, Chad should remain the Jets starting QB until if/when the Jets are eliminated from the playoff hunt. If that happens in week 17, so be it. I will gladly take the Jets w/ Chad going into week 17 with a chance to make the playoffs over starting a rookie QB next week. As for the statements regarding QBs riding the bench in their rookie year, the results are hit & miss...with more of them being misses. For every Peyton Manning, Drew Bledsoe or Ben Roethlisberger that started in their rookie year, you also have Akili Smith, Joey Harrington, Ryan Leaf, etc. Take a look at the NFL draft since 1982 - http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/positions/QB Attached is the list of every QB selected, by team & round. If you tell me that sitting on the bench as a rookie QB is bad, I think history does not support that claim. If things go well, the next time I want to see Clemens on the field is in the first pre-season game of 2007.
My feeling on the matter of sitting QB's is that players play and busts bust out. The fact that their isn't overwhelming evidence to one side or the other supports that feeling. But of course there's no way to prove anything in this debate because we simply don't know what would've happened if players were handled differently.
While I think Clemens is the future, and Chad is the present, some of you need to wake up. This was the third consecutive week Chad has thrown the ball like he should be wearing a skirt. I love Chad. I have since Day 1. I was one of those people begging for Vinny to be pulled and Chad get the ball. I admit I didn't think he'd make it back this year, and that it was all over for him. I admit I was wrong the first 1/3 of the season. I was hopeful when I heard he was coming back in TC, but I didn't believe it. HOWEVER, something is wrong with him physically. If you can't see it, you aren't paying attention. Where he had zip on the 10 yarders earlier in the year, now he can't throw a 5 yard pass with any velocity. Eventually, that's going to catch up to him. While I am not ready to jump of the Chad bandwagon yet, I am far from proclaiming him the future right now. Clemens should not appear in a game this year unless 1) We are up 25 with 3 minutes left in a game, 2) We are eliminated from the playoff hunt or 3) The unmentionable regarding Chad's health. However, this team is Clemens by the end of next year. Love Chad all you want, but Clemens will be the franchise QB at some point. It's just a matter of time.
Thanks for posting that. Starting a rookie QB only increases the probability that that the player will fail. Pennington himself has said that backing up Vinny for a couple of years (rather than being thrown into the mix right away) helped get him ready to take over as QB in 2002. TBTF
How does it increase the probability that the player will fail? If there is any difference at all I would attribute it to the fact that shitty teams are more likely to reach for the savior at QB and misfire with the pick. And since they're such shitty t eams they start the QB right away because they don't have anyone else.
I hate to invoke an old cliche but I think it's fitting in this debate. It's better to go with the devil you know than the one you don't. We know what we have with Chad, Clemens is a coin flip at this point. I don't have a high opinion of Chad at this point and time. Even after yesterday's improbable win. His ceiling just isn't that high. But we are 5-4 with him, so until we go on a losing streak in the next couple of years I don't expect to see Clemens for awhile.
Yeah, I guess Leinart and Young are obvious busts because they are playing in their rookie campaigns right? 3rd, while I disagree with you sometimes, this is not one of those times. This week you are hitting the nail right on the head every time. I still think there are very few people besides you and me actually watching the games.
I'm truly dumbfounded by the nature of this conversation 24 hours after Chad and the Jets won at Foxboro against that coach and that D in the wind and rain. You're going to cite statistics from a game like that in those elements? How were Brady's stats yesterday? Anyone want to knock him? Are you guys fucking kidding me? Chad doesn't have the physical tools? Did you see him throw a long TD pass perfectly to Cotchery? Did you see him avoid the rush and throw a bullet to Cotch over the middle on 3rd and long? Did you see him take a QB keeper into the line to pick up a 1st down on 4th and inches? Against New Fucking England? Damn, if you're not impressed after this game I have to think you're just looking for shit to bitch about.
