I agree that it's 90% the QB position, but finding a franchise QB is not easy and seems to be more about luck than anything else. For every one of those guys, there are 30 who showed potential in college but were crappy pros.
How the fans react isn't really the issue. I'm sure that a large portion of the fanbase will throw a bitch fit, and the Benignos of the world will rant and rave on a daily basis. But that's not really the problem. The problem is that the owner will probably cave to those pressures and abandon a true rebuilding effort (which I'm all for) as soon as people start buying yellow penalty flags again. He doesn't have to. He owns the team. He has every right to tell the reactionary portion of the fanbase that "I own the team, burning tons of money every offseason trying to assemble a mercenary championship team clearly doesn't work, we're going to build it from the foundation up even if it takes several years, and you'll thank me later", but he won't do that because he's either too concerned about the media perception of the team, or because he doesn't actually have any understanding of the way pro sports works, or both. So as long as Woody owns the team, they're going to be caught in this cycle inbetween rebuilding and competing forever unless they can luck into a hall of fame QB in the draft.
I don't get this. I really don't. Football is a sport where the average player lasts less than three years on a team. You need key players like a QB, but you also need depth at a lot of positions. So what do you have to give up for a "rebuilding effort"? More specifically, why do you have to lose to rebuild? I posit that with the exception of rare, 1-overall/2-overall QBs, you don't really need to shoot for the very top of the draft. And if you want to go to the top of the draft to get a particular QB, you can always get there - the Redskins, Rams, and Eagles all traded into pick #1 or #2 to select their QBs within the recent past. Plus there's the option of getting your QB lower down in the first round (Steelers, Packers), if not outright out of the first (Cowboys - although that is a crapshoot which I don't like). Or pay a lower 1st round pick and trade for a decent QB - KC and the Vikings did that with pretty decent success in the last few years. There are always paths to get your players, you just have to be willing to take them. All those paths don't involve losing. Forget the "rebuilding". Just play to win and build a winning culture. Replace the players who don't perform, don't chase high-priced free agents (yours or others), don't tolerate mediocrity in players or coaches.... that's what we need to rebuild, the _culture_. Not by tanking and drafting high, but by looking top to bottom in the organization.
Jets fans are stupid. Every time we hire a new coach we are rebuilding. Every time that coach gets a new qb we are rebuilding. The Jets rebuild every 3 to 4 years. You all want to hear rebuild again as if that will make a difference.. This organization deserves to be a laughing stock. The Jets went out of their way to throw Geno under the bus who has more talent than any other qb on this roster. Stupid racists Jet fans fell for it, and they are the biggest reason this organization sucks. Keep on dreaming for something that will never happen. The Jets could have had Dak Prescott, but this racists fan base probably would have flipped their wigs, so onto more mediocre qb's, and it's no surprising the Jets are talking rebuild. You shoot yourself in the foot so many times that there is nothing else last to say.
It depends--if you commit to rebuilding then draft like John Idzik or Mike Tannebaum, it won't work. Can you believe that two fairly recent number 1 picks of the jets (Coples and Millner) are out of the LEAGUE now?
Wish I could like this post 10 more times. Still amazes me that 'fans' still believe things like tanking or rebuilding exist, let alone advocate for them..
The problem is our drafts suck. You can't announce your rebuilding when you continue to have bad drafts. We can't continue to waste second round draft picks. We need to get starters in that round not these guys: 2016: Hackenberg (who knows) 2015: Devin Smith (can't stay healthy) 2014: Jace Amaro (can't stay healthy) 2013: Geno Smith (bust) 2012: Stephen Hill (bust) 2011: No pick 2010: Vlad Ducasse 2009: No pick 2008: Traded up for keller (below average starter) 2007: David Harris ( good stable starter) So its been 9 years since we really hit on a second round pick and 8 since we got someone who made any contribution at all. You can't have droughts like that and expect to be competitive. Maybe you can get away with if you are hitting with your first and 3rd rounders at a high rate but thats not the case with the jets. I would happily give the jets 3 years to re-build but I am not confident eliminating the veteran free agents we have brought in will help the root of our issue which is the draft.
WTF? This sounds like a butthurt Hillary supporter. Fuck it. Call everyone racist. How did this organization throw Geno under the bus? He started 30 games for this team. Bowles (who is the HC and black btw) had him as the starter for 2015 before he got in a fight and had his jaw broken. Then just last month they went back to him again. He got hurt, or he'd probably still be starting. How the fuck did racist fans have any bearing on what happened to Geno? If you think that the majority of Jet fans wouldn't be thrilled with Dak Prescott has our QB, then you are freakin' LAWST!!
The reason this team is loosing has nothing to do with the fans. It has nothing to do with guys on the radio, its not a race issue either. Our owner has a bad power structure, business model, and football philosophy. Why do we year in and year out get the new unproven coach,GM, ect. Our team has been offensively challenged for almost the last 20 years, yet Woody keeps hiring defensive background head coaches. For once can we go out and hire an experienced head coach, and a good one at that. Throw 20M at Harbaugh or somebody like that. Give them the keys to the whole show, then sit back and wait. Woody will never do that, and that is the reason we are going to continue to make a playoff run every 10+ years or so. Woody is the culprit, and not going away soon.
When a team drafts as bad as the Jets have in the last decade, a team can only logically do two things. 1. Rebuild from scratch 2. Find a GM who can draft talent
