It's been bad these first 2 pre-season games. Hopefully we get it going in the dress rehearsal.

our defense is fucking insane. L O V E it.

i could go on and on and on about Calvin Pryor, he is everything to this defense... kid does everything asked of him and more. High motor, bone crushing hits, puts fear in WR's hearts (Odell really put his hands down and stopped mid route to avoid the hit and allowed an easy pick for revis... Odell remembered last year in the end zone). He's going to evolve into a top safety in the league.. he's already a dark horse in my top 5 safeties since returning to SS.

& How bout Big Cat?? Is this dude an absolute stud or what?! I see Aaron Donald in the making, hell he already might be on the same level as far as interior pressure, its crazy what he does out there. He's ready to take that elite step. Him and Wilk are going to take turn feasting on that side of the field all year.. (teams been stopped running on sheldon's side two years ago)

This defense is going to be special. Younger and faster too.. once Bowles starts bringing them exotic blitzes, Marcus Williams will begin to prosper as he has been doing last 2 years. Pre-season we not brining much pressure (well our d-line is but that's just what they do) we haven't blitzed much and when we have it was a good one (Pryor smacks Eli). So for the most part he's just running around in coverage way longer than he would in regular season.. he'll be fine. Haven't seen much of Lee though... Jenkins looks ready to roll, savage.

they looked good saturday and with the amount of talent on the defense they should be fine in the regular season but saturday's performance doesn't mean a whole lot. The Gints offense has been terrible all preseason and they got skunked worse by Rex a week before

Question...Did Lee not play on Saturday night? I wasn't able to see or listen to the game due to a previous commitment, but in looking at the stats following the game, I didn't see Lee's name mentioned and he wasn't credited with any tackles or assists.

The front seven is beastly, but the secondary is thin. One injury to Revis and we're screwed at corner.

Ist string played the whole half
He played a lot. Can't give you snap counts and I wasn't really focused on that but I'd say something like a rotational basis with Henderson.

On the other hand it looks like Mauldin may still be a situational pass rusher at this point. One play in the first half

With Bowles and our coaching staff returning under year number two I feel strongly that we'll have the NFL's #1 rated defense.

Our defense was top 5 under Bowles last year but I believe we'll see the biggest difference at LB now that we've finally added youth, speed, quickness, coverage ability & faster pursuit throughout our linebacking core. RB's catching wheel routes out of the backfield should be a thing of the past. The likes of Maudlin, Lee, Jenkins & potentially Bishop should easily increase pressure on opposing QB's from the outside as well. Appears to be solid role playing depth players in Henderson & Carter too.

This defensive line (as we all know) is just down right nasty. The makings of a dominant D-Line featuring 3 All-Pro types of lineman in Wilkerson, Williams & Richardson. They'll not only collapse the pocket while pressuring quarterbacks but they'll make life hell for opponents trying to set up a run game especially with a box SS in Pryor also sniffing out the run.

Last but not least this secondary is as good as it gets overall talent wise. Revis is still a blessing of a #1 CB to have up against #1 WR's. Calvin Pryor is also an up & coming star at SS who could take this unit over the top. Buster Skrine is ideal at Nickel (considerd as a most improved player per Bowles) and Gilchrist is simply solid overall. The key is our #2 CB opposite of Revis, it's a big "if" but if Williams can perform as he left off last year our secondary has the makings of being able to feast behind a fierce front-7.

D-Line. LB. Secondary. All three phases of defense are prime to contend. Expecting the best Jets defense we've ever witnessed as a fan base & even more dominant than those 2009/2010 Jet defenses under Ryan; the overall talent has never been as deep as here in 2016.

Something else that should make our D better and more effective is the play of our STs. Our coverage units should do much better and our punting almost certainly will be better. Hopefully, the days of 20 yard shanked punts are gone forever. Thus, opponents should have much poorer starting field position, which should affect their play calling.

In addition, we will finally have an actual, honest-to-God, real returner who is capable of taking it to the house and cranking out big returns. This should lead to more points for us, which hopefully will put us in the lead most of the time, and having opposing teams having to play from behind which should set our pass rushers up to pin their ears back and go after the QB. Even if we don't always score following big returns by Marshall or Ross, at the very least, they should result in opponents having poorer field position.

I don't see much improvement on the offense this year from last year, so I think that puts the burden of team performance on the defense this season. The defense looked great against the Giants. True, the Giants don't have a great OL, but they have three of the best offensive players in the game in Manning, Cruz and Beckham and the Jets handled them pretty well.

The offense looks like it's going to struggle scoring points again. I don't see many sustained drives per game, maybe one or two. The rest of the points should come from FG's and turnovers. If the defense plays well, that may be enough for a winning season.

In comparing the QB's. I haven't seen anything from Geno yet to change my mind that he should not be in future consideration. I like the velocity on both Petty and Hackenburg's throws. Their deep throws are like line drives, whereas, Fitz balls seem to have more air under them. Understand Fitz is the QB by experience, he earned it from last year. However, the Jets are going to need to move on from Fitz, and both Petty and Hackenburg look promising.

The improvement in the offense isn't necessarily with the first teamers, it's having a decent #4,5,6 wr who can hold the fort if Marshall or Decker are out for a game or two. Same at RB if Forte or Powell get banged up, although Forte hasn't really been that impressive so far. We need another solid back This killed us a couple games last season, no depth.
We have depth now that can perform at a pretty high level and can grow into starters.

We look to be set the same way on defence. Starting talent and depth at every position.

ST has looked outstanding, best in a long while. A short field is what we need with Fitz, he could do very well.
A long field, with our defense should keep us in every game.

I wasn't impressed with our D the first two games, but the Giants game for 3 quarters was impressive.

I've got to imagine the rapport between Fitz/Marshall/Decker/Enunwa can only be stronger with a year under their belts together, so hopefully (along with staying healthy) their overall numbers get even better.

I also think if one of the new guys from the secondary group of receivers ( hoping its Robby Anderson) can beak out and give us another threat - that will cover up for the Mr. Glass pick from last year. Devin Smith only gave us 9 receptions in 10 games. His long was 22 yards........ouch. ( I agree with you that having Fitz's long ducks don't help out a speedster though)

And as much as I loved Ivory, I think Forte/Powell/Robinson will get us more production out of the backfield than Ivory/Powell/the rotting corpse of Steven Ridley did last year.

I'm more concerned with how our offensive line holds up.

I'm surprised westiedog left out the special teams improvement.

Yeah, okay, I hear you. I'm not sure preseason special teams play means much. Many of the guys on preseason ST's are on the bubble, playing against the opponent's bubble guys, desperately trying to impress the CS. Most of the guys won't be staying. I still think football games are won by defense and offense. I'm not as concerned with runback yardage as many on this board are, but I respect that. To me, it's more important the returner not cough up the football. If you have to rely on punt and kickoff returns for offense, then there's something wrong with your team. But, yes, impressed so far by Ross and Marshall.

You do know that Marshall wasn't playing right? With him on the field, it opens up so much space for the rest of the team.

Last year our offense ranked 10th in total yards & 11th in scoring offense. We can crack top 5 within both aspects this up coming season.

I actually see lots of key offensive improvements when compared to last year.

First and foremost the likes of Fitzpatrick, Powell, Marshall, Decker & Enunwa all returning under Chan Gailey will give us improved team chemistry, offensive cohesion, player rapport & overall familiarity as an offensive unit.

We've added a 3 down back in Matt Forte who ranks top 3 amongst all NFL players in average yards per game from schrimage over the past five seasons. A trio surrounding Fitzpatrick in Forte, Marshall & Decker is very dynamic. And unlike Chris Ivory, Matt Forte is absolutely great catching out of the backfield and also very good within pass protection for an HB. Unlike Ivory he's a true 3 down back.

Last but not least the likes of an emerging Enunwa with younger prospects in Anderson, Peake & Jalin Marshall could end up giving our offense another 'wrinkle' when compared to 2015.

I actually feel we have one of the most balanced offenses around which should create for a top 5 offense both scoring & total yardage wise.

Yeah, but he was in the first two games and not much went on with the O in those games.

We haven't seen any improvement in preseason, but imo Forte will be an upgrade over Ivory, we know more what Powell can do, and Robinson is an improvement over whomever was the #3 RB last season. Amaro has supposedly improved as has Enunwa. Then we should be adding Anderson, Peake and maybe J. Marshall to our receiving corps. Unless he gets injured, Clady will be an upgrade over Brick and either Ijalana or Qvale almost have to be an upgrade over Giacomini. With this being the second year in Gailey's system together for most of the offense, that should help as well. Finally, with better STs play, the Jets should get the ball in better field position, which should help the offense as well. Granted, we're playing tougher, better defenses, but we should see improvement in the offense this season. Fitz will be the key, however. If he reverts to form, the offense will struggle until he is replaced or turns things around.

    Jets Defensive Front

I'm surprised there hasn't been more chatter about the Jets defensive front against the Giants.
I haven't really seen that look before this game.

    Couple casual observations below:
Feel free to add what you guys were seeing..

    Base D
while we played straight vanilla 3-4 in the first two games, this past game looked like a hybrid 3-4/4-3 front to me.
Mo, Williams, Mac, Richardson all down on the line, with Catapano (in for Jenkins) also standing 2 pt stance on line.
    Harris and Henderson as ILB's.
Revis and Skrine as the Corners.
it looked like a stout 3-4 to me, with 4 big bodied lineman, and 4 hands in the dirt.

Mac and Richardson were primarily playing the weakside from what i could tell, with Mac at NT with a shade towards weakside gap, and Sheldon at E.
on the strong side, it was Williams outside shoulder of G, Mo playing out wide in front of TE (like a 7-tech), and Catapano with contain and flat responsibilities, freed up to blitz as needed.

on a couple instances, Williams and Mac switched spots along the line, with Williams at the nose.

    Nickel
we played a lot of Nickel last season, getting our best personnel on the field.
it also looked different against the Giants though.

    instead of Snacks coming out and Skrine coming on like last year;
Catapano came out, Williams came in at CB, and Skrine kicked inside.
McLendon remained out there, leaving us a four man front of big dogs in Nickel which i found interesting. That could be a tough D to run against, despite playing 5DB's.
The ILB's remained Harris and Henderson.

    Dime/Long ydg situations
Wilk and Williams played DT, with Catapano and Mauldin as pass rushing ends.

Burris saw some snaps at Corner in this package, as well as some Nickel snaps.
Lee was rotated in as ILB as well.

The second half i didn't pay as much attention to, but believe it was back to regular 3-4, probably trying to assess the backups in a more traditional D.
I'm glad Bowles is tinkering with ways to optimize personnel, and loved seeing us blitz again.
This D has the personnel. With good coaching, i don't see why it couldn't be in contention among the league's best defensive units.
Excited to see a closer look on how we might play things, especially after getting gashed the first 2 weeks of preseason.
