I think it comes down to whether the Jets need Geno to backup Fitz this year or whether they think one of the kids can backup Fitz this year. If they think either of the kids can backup Fitz this year (and don't discount Hack falling into this backup role as he came from a pro style offense), then I think Geno is gone this year. Otherwise its Petty. The only exception is if they've given up on Petty by the end of training camp, then Petty will be gone and Geno will stay. I don't see them carrying 4 QBs this year.
I think all decisions about Petty will have to be postponed until he returns from the Madden NFL Video Championship
I was thinking it would be Petty given how poor his OTAs were this year. However, I am hoping they find a way to keep him on the roster.
Gino's contract expires at the end of the season, so he is the logical choice. Petty & Hackenburg need at least year to develop. Ideally, the jets want to be looking at Petty vs Hack for the starting job going into 2017, with another QB added via draft as the #3 or vet backup.
Petty's spot has nothing to do with Hackenberg if you think about it. Hack is the future. Hopefully he can start next year if he properly progresses. So it really comes down to "Can Petty Back-up Fitz better or equal to Geno?" If the answer is yes, I think Geno is released or traded. If no, I think Petty is released. Hackenberg does slightly factor into this though, because if he shows that he can back-up Fitz, it could possibly make the Jets feel they can release Geno. I just don't think they want to put him in that situation. Still, Geno started in 2013 as a 2nd Rounder. You would think Hack could be a back-up. I assume he will basically be red-shirted for 2016 though.
You're likely right but if Fitz's 2016 ends with injury (which I fully expect, btw) then if he comes back, it won't necessarily be as a starter.
It's possible the Geno's days are number d, yes. But for now (unless Hack or Petty are better than we know) Geno is the backup. He might be disposable next year, but not in 2016.
i think its pretty cut and dry. fitz and the team have a successful season(play offs and fitz has another career type year an he is back) otherwise mac moves on. injuries could put a wrinkle in that but not much of one. and i expect to see a game or 2 from geno too. fitz's career consists of him falling into and out of starting jobs.
Reps situation will be interesting. obviously you need to get in Fitz a lot of work. really need to start challenging Petty too. Continue his development, and see if he's anywhere near ready to be a backup so we won't need to carry 4 QBs. but at the same time, you need to get Geno work in the likely event Petty is not ready. all this while trying to acclimate Hack to the pros and start developing him, as we'd all like him to potentially challenge for the starting job next year. for that type of development to happen, he needs actual work. How is a team supposed to develop players when nobody's allowed to practice anymore?
While Petty is the most likely cut out of camp, I voted Geno because I think the Jets will carry 4 QBs this year. If this happens, Geno will be gone after 2016 unless he gets to play and plays well.
The real question should have been: When will Petty go on season ending IR with a sprained belly button?
One good thing the Jets do under TB is to run 2 practice fields - this maximises reps for the guys trying to make the roster (if you assume that 40-45 spots are already allocated)
Last year they ran with 9 LBs and 11 DBs for some of the season. I think for the possible future of the team they can find a disposable player there or somewhere else on the roster. My numbers may be off but not really the point, they can find a roster spot.
yup ur right....mac says the back end of the roster is full of developmental guys who never dress for games.
