I'm saying the kid has experience under his belt and can come in a compete to be a long term solution rather then these retreads that are 100 years old and have no possibility of a future .
Not every QB in the league is a scrambler , that doesn't mean he can't succeed.
The slow release you complain about can be worked on as he gains experience and gets more comfortable reading defences .
I don't agree with your way of thinking here but you're entitled to it .

The same way you feel about not giving up on Petty is how I feel about Mett. The Titans ended up with the 2nd overall pick because the team was terrible, it does not all fall on Mett.

Mett has been through 2 coaching staffs, we know that is never good for the development of any player, especially the QB position. This is all hypothetical so I guess we really can't get to crazy about it, but in my opinion he is much better than Geno at this point in his career.

His ceiling is still high, what he needs is good consistent coaching. Oh and I'm not down on Petty, I like him. My scenario was simply based on who had more experience as a QB that could hold down the backup spot, and as much as I don't like Geno, I begrudgingly gave him the benefit of the doubt to be the back up.

The truth is, im okay with letting the 3 guys the jets have now, battle it out and may the best man win.

Red, did you watch him play his rookie year or last year? He was really bad last year. He was Inaccurate, struggled getting past his first read, was too quick to dump the ball off after first read taken away (his coaches said this), always looking for the big play, doesn't have situational awareness. Not known for being a hard worker. His decision making isn't good and he needs a clean pocket to throw accurately. He's got a big arm but is slow to process what he sees.

Hack and Mett are the same kind of QB. Strong arm, throws deep well and are not known for their accuracy.

pull the fitz offer off the table like carolina did. go with the 3 other guys.
if fitz is dumb enough to reject double the salary he got last year, despite melting down ina playoff qualifying game and with the benefit of a weak schedule, then let him go elsewhere. keep the cap space and draft picks rather than trade for another band aid.

Not really Mett sounds more like Geno esp the hard worker part. Sorry but even then his td to interceptions is better then geno.
I have higher hopes for hack

not saying the JETS should make a move, but I thought dude was a stud at LSU until he blew out his knee, and was really hoping the JETS would draft him in the middle of the draft at the time.

Sure you could add Geno into the mix but what I said about Hack and Mett still stand. They're not known for their accuracy and have big arms.

I'd rather roll with Hack than Geno/Mett/Scrub X but that's not saying much.

I understand what your saying, I'm aware of his flaws, and your correct about Hack and Mett being similar.

However I'm also trying to take into consideration his being a rookie, thrown into the fire on a terrible team, no protection, no running game, poor receivers.

A defense that put them in a hole from
    the beginning of the game.

Second HC in as many seasons.

I remember Alex Smith being considered a bust, he went through 3 or 4 coaching staffs before they brought in a HC that knew what to do with the offense and the same QB who was considered a bust turned his career around and fulfilled his potential.

He may not be a HOF QB but how many teams would love to have Alex Smith as their QB now?

The fact is that he won't be coming to the Jets.

You may be right, he may be a bust, but is the reason why he struggled completely on him or was it partly due to lack of proper development by the coaching staff?

What is your preference or opinion on the Jets as far as QB situation?

He only really came on his last year but that year he was throwing absolute laser beams- irrespective of who he was throwing to. He was rocketing up the charts until he blew out his knee. I really liked him in the middle rounds in a great year for QBs.

He's basically a much more accurate less mobile version of Hack. More arm talent but less athletic.

Had we not drafted Hack I'd be all over this, but at this point I'm not sure the cost of the pick is worth it. I still think he'll be a starter in this league.

Really? Where do these conclusions come from?

"Smart?" Very subjective, no reference to his on-field decision making.

"Great character?" Who says? Does that mean he goes to church, hasn't been arrested or helps old ladies cross the street?

"Strong, accurate arm?" Well, he did show that in college but we haven't seen enough to decide if that holds up in the speed of the NFL game.

"Jets have been pleased with his progress." Here is where I would disagree. We have seen nothing from the Jets that would indicate anyone in the organization believes Petty is on track to be a starter. If asked, there will be half hearted mumbling that he is learning the system or
has had a good day. Not once have I seen anyone proactively praise him without being questioned. The Jets will never say they are disappointed because that would compromise the financial investment they have made. Remember that there were two games last year that the Jets chose to send only the injured Fitzpatrick wearing a mitt and Smith to the field; why did they not dress Petty even if only for insurance?

Why would the Jets dress Petty? Fitz was cleared to play and Geno was a healthy backup. There's no point dressing three QBs when you need depth players at other positions who will actually play snaps.

Because nobody knew if Fitz was going to be able to perform for the whole game with the mitt on the non-throwing hand and he was more susceptible to aggravation of the injury. That would leave just Smith. How many of those depth players were never used and could have been replaced a lot easier than the QB?

That's fine. No one said that we had to agree.

Yes, he has experience. Where we differ is you think he could compete to be the long term solution and I don't. I don't think he has the talent to be a quality starter. I see him as strictly a backup and spot starter.

In Gailey's offense, the QB needs to be mobile. A statue in the pocket will not work well in Gailey's offense imo.

I could be mistaken, but I don't think the release can be corrected that easily, if at all. I guess it depends upon what one means by "release" but I see it as primarily throwing motion, whether a QB has a slow delivery or a quick one where the ball comes out with a quick flick of the wrist and the ball seems to jump out of his hand. Some QBs just have a slower release, and I see him as one of those guys. With others it's much quicker. He has been with Tampa for 3 years now and has 18 starts and has appeared in 19 games. If he isn't "comfortable" reading Ds by now, he never will be imo. I never thought he was a good Prospect coming out of NC State, and if he hasn't fixed whatever problems/issues he had during his 3 years in the league, he's not likely to imo.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. I wouldn't want him on the team if he signed as a FA and had a 0 cap hit. I just don't like his game.

Fair enough, but Mett played in a couple of different programs in college, was a 6th round pick, and imo didn't do enough in college to really merit a lot of development time now unless one has one of two different situations. One, would be a terrible QB situation with no other options for a possible QB of the future; and the other would be where one had a franchise QB, wasn't worried about the starting job, and could take some time to work with a developmental QB like Mett and see if he panned out. If he did, you have a solid backup or could possibly trade him for a pick or picks. If not, one wouldn't have lost much.

I disagree. While both are big, have big arms, and have had some accuracy issues to date, the comparison ends there imo. Hack loves the game, is a hard worker and has an instatiable desire to learn and get better. I've never seen/heard the same thing said about Mett. Hack's strength is reading Ds. That's Mett's weakness. I think if you put Hack in the LSU situation, Hack would probably have been a top 5 pick in this draft and LSU may have won a couple of national championships. Put Mett at Penn St. and they may not have won a game.

These conclusions come from what his college HC Art Briles and what Mac and Bowles have had to say about him.

You're wrong. I have read numerous times where Bowles and Mac have said they were very happy or pleased with his progress and that they remain high on him.
