I really wish the Jets focused more on the OL.

But with that said, I like how they improved the LB core. They should be faster going forward. The front seven just got a whole lot scariers than it already was.

And the more I read about Hack, the more I like the pick. It really does seem like the coaching staff let him down at PSU. I think sanctions had something to do with it. That makes sense to me.

There's a difference between disagreeing with the evaluation of a player and calling a draft a bust when this shit doesn't get properly evaluated until the players actually play.

That's fine that we disagree. Mac took Petty in the 4th round last year and every statement they've made on him has been that they are very high on him. They're not going to give up on him and cut him after one season. GMs just don't do that. They owe Geno nothing. They've been very sparing on any positive comments regarding Geno. Geno's in the last year of his contract, and has still yet to show that he has the mental ability to succeed in the NFL. Mac has said on a number of occasions that he's not going to hurt the long-term future of the team in order to try to make the team better short term. IMO, if they sign Fitz or another vet QB, Geno's as good as gone. Petty's going nowhere. The only way Geno is still on the team is if they fail to re-sign Fitz and just opt to go with Geno as the starter.

I hear you regarding the OL. I am as well, but am very happy (at least for now) with the way things have turned out. Mac did the best he could. The draft just didn't fall our way with regards to OL.

I agree regarding the STs with the 2 7th round picks.

I agree with the bolded statement except that Hacks' inaccuracy mostly stems from his footwork, which is pretty easily fixed. His level of QB smarts/IQ is not coachable, nor is his cannon of an arm. Stupid is as stupid does, and there's little or nothing the Jets can do with that.

Perhaps not, but it could still be uninformed. I daresay that most posters know little or nothing about fundamentals/technique. They may see that a player plays poorly and think he has no talent, and never realize that the player can be very good if his fundamentals are fixed and he gets good coaching. In the case of Hackenberg, if someone just saw his play the last two years and didn't see him play his freshman season, they could and probably would have a very different opinion of him and of how talented he was. Many fans just look at stats and whether a QB wins or loses. In Hack's case, he had 3 different OCs in college and 2 different HCs. He played in an offense for which he wasn't a good fit his last two years and in which he won't play in the NFL. Conversely, in his rookie season when he played in an NFL-style offense, had a solid OL and quality WRs and coaching he excelled.

Watching college football is deceptive. Players are playing in gimmicky offenses and offensive stats can get inflated. Skill position players, especially WRs can look much better than they actually are, as can QBs. The level of coaching that many players get is poor. Some of those players had great success in high school and even college because they were naturally bigger, stronger and/or faster than other players. When they get to the NFL and everyone is bigger and faster, suddenly they aren't so good.

Conversely, some players are late bloomers physically, or develop once they get quality coaching. Some don't do well in college because they aren't good fits in the scheme used by their school, but then get to the NFL and excel.

We've all seen players in college that we thought were going to be huge stars in the NFL, and they wind up being busts or meh-type players. Conversely, we've seen players in college that we thought would never make it in the NFL or they'd be camp fodder, PS players or STs become quality starters, if not stars. Even the "pros" (NFL GMs and scouts miss), and they know a hell of a lot more than we do to begin with, have seen more film, have worked players out, have interviewed them and their former coaches, and given them intelligence and psychological tests. Yes, sometimes we can be right when NFL GMs and scouts are wrong, but that doesn't mean that we know more than they do or can consistently be right.

Then there's the issue of how those players translate into the NFL. In the case of OL they might excel in a zone blocking scheme, but struggle and/or fail when drafted by a team that uses a man blocking scheme. In the case of QBs, they may not be a good fit for the offensive scheme that is employed by the NFL team that drafts them, or may not respond to the coaching style.

Scooby Wright still available? Worth a look in round 7.

    Too slow imo.

I'd rather they take a P and PR or STs gunner.

An average draft by the Jets. Nothing wrong with that.

Now, sign Fitz, cut Geno and work for the future. I still like Petty, and i'm not too crazy for Hack, but if Macca thinks this could work, then I trust him.

Any big, tall WR remaining? Who knows? Jets might find their Marques Colston after all. :D

But on that basis Geno is 'good enough' to be the starter but not the back-up. And if we sign a vet and he goes down injured I can't see a Head Coach prepared to accept either Hack or Petty as his go-to.

Normally, that would make good sense, but when Geno has little or no ceiling, and has such a low football IQ, imo they're not gonna keep him over a prospect with more potential. The only reason he would start this season if they don't re-sign Fitz or sign another vet, is that he has two years of starting experience, he's cheap and under contract, and they have said repeatedly that they don't want to have to rush Petty onto the field. That said, last year they said that Petty could have started if necessary early on. He's further along in his development now.

Ultimately, I think it will depend upon if they are able to re-sign Fitz. If he's back, he's the starter, and they may cut Geno before TC. If not, I think Petty and Geno would compete for the backup spot, and if Geno lost, he'd be gone. In that scenario, I guess it's possible that Petty could be cut, but I'd be completely gobsmacked. I think they'd be more likely to keep 4 QBs than cut Petty.

If the vet goes down for a short time, I think Petty or perhaps even Hack would play. If it was going to be a long-term injury, then the Jets would probably sign another vet.

It's an interesting dilemma. However, if our GM subscribes to the Ron Wolf model of drafting QB's on a yearly basis then you have to be prepared to cut them ruthlessly on a yearly basis. Petty was after all only a 4th rounder (and look what we did to next years 4th round pick!).

hoyer isn't as good as fitz and overall not worth the cap room. I'd rather try my luck with the geno/petty/hack competition and see what happenes if we don't get fitz back.

I think personally the defense is just about done in terms of acquiring young talent. We have young talent at each level of the D.

    D-Line: Mo, Sheldon and Leonard
    Linebackers: Lee, Maudlin, Jenkins
Secondary: Pryor, Gilchrist, Marcus Williams, Juston Burris

Only thing really missing in terms of youth is another corner and edge rusher. Next draft, I hope we draft offense big time.

    Definitely an interesting dilemma.

The thing is, most GMs don't give up on a QB they've drafted after one year (even if it was in the 4th round). Heck, for that matter, they rarely give up on any player they've drafted after one year, unless he immediately proves himself to be a bust, and even then, most are reluctant to give up on them and usually keep them around another year or so. Mac may be that ruthless, but it would surprise me if he is. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Enjoyed the discussion! Cheers! Just heard about Leicester City today. Amazing!

Of course it's not all Ranieri, but he did conjure up chicken salad out of chicken shit this season. Grats to them. [They even took 1 point from Old Trafford the other night. Icing on the cake, if you ask me.]

I've enjoyed it to...I guess we could end up with 4 QB's on the roster!

As for Leicester (remember I don't like soccer) I find it bizarre. For me this shows that the EPL is badly structured - surely, like the NFL, everybody should have the potential to win the league? The worst-to-first concept is alive and kicking in the USA...in the UK we've just stumbled across it for the first time ever!

Yes, I was shocked to read that Mac was considering keeping 4 QBs. No NFL team does that any more. But upon further reflection, if Fitz is here and goes down with an injury, unless they think Petty or Hack could step in and play effectively without it hurting their development, I think keeping 4 QBs would be the best option (least negative).

Sorry I assumed that you liked soccer. Guess I made an ass out of myself.
