This is one thing that really irritates me about the way the Jets approached this draft. Reaches, guys with huge question marks size wise, not being aggressive and jumping up, making the trade and getting the guy you know you need that can anchor the line for a generation (Tunsil) settling on meh non difference makers (Burris, Jenkins) You cannot let your offensive line decay and regress. Not for Fitz, Hack, Petty, or whoever is starting. We really needed some support there in the first two rounds and got zilch This is still a WR driven league. You always have to look for explosive playmakers there or at least solid route running hands guys. Nope. We let the Giants go and grab Sterling Shepard, we didn't make a move for Brax Miller or Thomas. Decker and Marshall aren't getting any younger and Devin Smith may be terrible. In a passing league you have to make sure your QB is protected and has weapons, and that you keep up and replenish in this positions. We did not do that. If Decker, Marshall, or both get hurt or regress we are ruined. Heck even a quick explosive RB in the 4th would've been a great idea. Powell won't last the year. Forte is ok but 30 and on the decline. Look at the Bengals and Steelers. And yea Cinci has issues with an idiot coach and they will never take the next step until they shitcan him...but they are ALWAYS in the playoffs. Do they ever have a shortage of playmakers on offense? No. Same with Pitt. The Giants are very up and down but they do have two SB's of late. They always make sure they have offensive playmakers.
I agree wholeheartedly with your points. I'm all for building a strong defense, but the neglect towards our offense's skill positions is troubling. Perhaps they're thinking is that Fitz will be back, and since he's a move the chains QB, and not very effective throwing the ball more than 15 yards, that a fast receiver who can stretch the field would be wasted with him at quarterback?
Solid point. Though if Hack is the guy for the future why not give him someone solid now (Shepard) who can work with Fitz this year and still be around to be with Hack next year or two years from now. If this was a pre 1994 NFL...I wouldn't be so upset with our draft. Be we're really going off in some other direction here.
Disagree. These are the positions that most needed to be addressed this year...hopefully the right players were selected. Our Lb corps was looking atrocious before these 2 adds. Decker and Marshall are right in their primes and coming off phenomenal years. Let's see what we have in Enunwa, Smith, Robinson, and what Forte has left in the tank. WR and RB likely won't have to be addressed for another 2-3 years. Next year is probably OL depending on what kind of year our tackles have and if anybody steps up opposite Carpenter. Also maybe CB once we know more about milliner/mcdougle.
I wish every person who says, "Defense wins championships" would go fuck themselves with a hot fire poker. It takes all 3 phases: Defense, Offense and Special Teams to win.
The Jets got a couple of solid looking LBs which they needed and CB depth which they will need after they dump Milliner and McDougle. This is a work in progress. They may want to get this foundation in place before adding the speed/ offensive skill players. And they could use some more speed on offense - yes.
I just remember sitting here...past drafts. Wanted Robert Woods (solid player)...nope got retarded Geno Smith Wanted to inch up and get Tavon Austin...nope, Dee Milliner Terrance Williams, Markus Wheaton, Keenan Allen? Nope, the terrible Brian Winters Kenny Stills still out there...nope ODAY ABOUSHI!? Now are all these guys world beaters? They're not, but they're much better than the drech we've been hauling in. Devonte Freeman one pick before we snag the immortal Jalen Saunders annoyed me to no end. We just flat out cannot find explosive offensive talent. And that talent is the engine that drives championship teams.
Not to mention the Jets just had one of the best offenses in franchise history this year and improved at RB. I get wanting offensive line but all the defensive picks were need too and QB's always a need by default till you find one. They literally could not fill all their needs with 'four' picks plus two sevenths and UDFA's.
You're 100% correct......this is a new regime though . Just because those drafts turned out bad doesn't mean this year will also.
We can wait another year to draft offensive play makers were pretty set right now and Wrs and Rbs are usually productive right away. We should have started rebuilding the O-line 3 years ago tho.
u mention the steelers, bengals, and giants..........the common denominator is the QB. until we get one that mirrors those teams' QB we will be stuck in the turnstile.
The only positions I was disappointed we didn't address on offense is the line; we certainly could use some depth and youth there. Maybe the coaching staff feels good about Qvale, Harrison, and Dosier. As far as the skill positions are concerned, I don't see why we would need to address them in this draft at all. Decker and Marshall are an outstanding 1-2, we just invested a 2nd round pick in Smith (though people here have already written him off), we have some young guys in Enunwa and Thompkins. Our 2nd round TE Amaro is coming back this year and has shown promise and is only 23, Robinson and Powell are 26 and 27 respectively at RB. People here are way, way too quick to write off young players. Devin Smith and Jace Amaro are 24 and 23 respectively, both 2nd round investments from the last two draft and have one season under their belts a piece, and people are already writing them off like they'll never amount to anything because they've each had injury issues and missed time. I'm glad our management has more patience than some of the posters here
The really big thing is the Jets HAVE to stop trading away so many draft picks and have to start accumulating more draft picks, especially in rounds 3-5 where you can get some really good players. Not having a 5th and 6th really hurts. Just once I'd like to see the jets with 10 picks or so with the bulk of them being rounds 3-5....
1. Jets have been neglecting the LB position for the entire Tannenbaum era, then the entire Rex Ryan era. They picked David Harris, picked up Calvin Pace and Bart Scott through FA. Not a single high pick was spent on edge rusher after Gholston disaster. [Throwing 1 1st round pick is not what I would call "Addressing edge rushing need."] 2. So they replenished the LB corps. Mauldin last year, and Lee and Jenkins this year. If Jets drafted well before Mac arrived, maybe they didn't need to do this now. Blaming this on this front office is - more than simply short-sighted. 3. On top of that, Jets skill position isn't really that weak. Marshall wasn't a burner anyway, and Decker still finds open space just fine. They will be around for 2-3 years; and Jets can address WR position in that time frame. 4. As for the OL - they do have quite a few young bodies at that spot now. Just not that many blue-chippers. And even that is a major improvement over T-Bomb days. Tannenbaum started very well with Brick and Mangold - then has neglected blue chip OL prospect ever since. Look - I can understand your frustration, but this Jets team had way too many holes to fill in a single draft. By next year they will be half competitive - and more if QB prospects pan out. [Petty or Hack. Whoever.] 5. And finally - not having 6th draft pick hurts? *ROFLMAO* If you think not having 5th round pick this year hurts - I have to question which 5th round tackle could start at LT immediately this year.
I doubt anyone "forgot" about any positions of need. You only get so many picks. It's not like we drafted DE & DT all draft. We drafted positions of need.
SMH. Be irritated if you want, but you're upsetting yourself for little or no reason. The Jets did not reach for a single player. Only among some Jets fans is Lee's size a question mark. If you bothered to read what Bowles, Mac and other NFL scouts/execs have said, the future of the NFL is in smaller, faster LBs who can cover. The Jets have been killed by lack of speed at LB for years. Bigger, DL-sized OLBs are not gonna be fast unless they're a freak, and those guys go in the top 10. Mac was aggressive. He tried to trade up not just once, but twice in the first round. I don't think he should have because we needed MORE picks, not less. When a team has a lot of needs, like the Jets, they all can' t be addressed, and when a GM burns picks by trading up, even fewer of those needs can be addressed. Obviously, you haven't been paying very much attention to the Jets. Prior to the draft, one of the Jets biggest needs was at OLB. They had 3 on their roster who are likely to stick: Mauldin, Reilly and Catapano. They needed at least one more OLB. Jenkins is a very good prospect. How many "difference makers" are there in the 3rd round? I understand being frustrated that the OL was not addressed. I thought it would be and should be, but everything Mac has done so far has shown that he has a plan and knows what he's doing. The left side of the OL is solid. The Jets are high on Qvale and he could very well beat out Giacomini at RT. There will be OGs available following the draft and TC cuts. They just added an OT in round 5. One of the last things the Jets needed was another RB. They currently have 4 on the roster: Forte, Powell, Robinson and Stacy (at least I don't recall seeing that Stacy was cut). There will be good RB prospects available as UDFAs or that will be released following the draft or as TC cuts. They didn't need to waste a pick on a RB. We have plenty of playmakers on offense. In this draft Mac has addressed three of our biggest needs: adding speed and coverage ability at LB, adding a quality OLB prospect, and possibly adding our QB of the future and a legit franchise QB prospect. In addition, he added a CB who can compete for the starting job opposite Revis.
