He hasn't been good, I'm not saying he is a scrub, but there has been no growth in his time in the NFL.

You would think that being with the Ravens, he would have developed into something other than average LB.

An Alabama player who is more hype than substance. If the jets don't sign him I wouldn't lose any sleep.

Wasn't Upshaw penciled in as a first rounder and ended up sinking to the 2nd on draft day? Or am I thinking of another LB drafted by the Ravens?

Either way, Norwood wouldn't be bad camp competition for Dri Archer.

Forgot we signed Dri. That move was real early in the offseason.

Upshaw is a waste of space.. not really good at pass rushing.. can help on the edge stopping the run but we have plenty of run stoppers and guys that help in run support..

I'd take Norwood though in a heartbeat.. a guy that will start our offense off at the 40!

I remember the discussions on the OLB class of 2012 (Ingram/Jones/Upshaw wasn't it?), I know a few championed this guy. Who was the one derided for the small arms?

Would love to see Norwood returning punts.

I think he'll be more durable than Archer but I'd like to see them compete for the job.

I think Norwood beats out Archer if we end up signing him, but it would still be nice to have them pushing each other. Norwood can slide into the slot when needed as well. Archer can too, but he's 5 foot nothing and weighs no pounds.

Upshaw would replace pace i think. Wouldn't be a bad signing considering the state of the lb corps right now

Upshaw is a younger version of Calvin Pace. Almost a 10 years younger clone. He is disappointing as a pass rusher but very good and underappreciated in the running game as he sets the edge well.

I would have to think an Upshaw signing would result in Pace being waived. Why would you keep 2 of the same player

It is interesting to see Mccagnan go after run stoppers in FA on the defense. That tells me he is concerned about losing Harrison and doesnt want any drop off in the run defense, and also that they might be planning something in the draft to address the passing defense at linebacker

Ingram and Upshaw both have "short arms" at 31"

Though I specifically remember people down on Upshaw in this forum because of his T-Rex arms.

Upshaw has 5 career sacks he's hardly similar to Pace

Doesn't know anything about the player... Just reads the box score...

Watch Upshaw play the game of football and tell me he's not Calvin Pace

From what I've read, it seems like he would be coming in for run defense on the first two downs... as for Pace he's a third-down pass rusher.

Pace is a FA I believe, and therefore cannot be waived.

i think you are underestimating Pace in his prime, but i agree with your overall point.

if we don't re-sign Pace, we'll need someone who can set the edge.
stuff the run, force opposing teams to be one dimensional, throwing into our good secondary.
if we can improve the pass rush in that equation, our D would be dangerous.
