The thing is the Jets, don't run the 3-4 as much as you think they do. I think this was debunked a number of times already, yet it keeps getting put in the conversation. Let's review again. 1. Jets run plenty of 4 man fronts [Redskins game for example - http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-je...e-wrinkle-another-look-for-patriots-to-digest] 2. Snacks plays 54% of the total snaps [not worth 6M, more like 4.5M] [Doesn't play on 3rd down] 3. They do not run the 3-4 as much as you think 4. You can put Sheldon and Mo as DTs in a 4 man front to off-set the loss of Snacks 5. Jets are high on Deon Simon They've run the 4-3 on many occasions actually using Demario as a weakside linebacker [example Redskins game]. Someone on the Jets will get a top 5 DL contract. Sheldon has off the field issues, and Leonard still needs to grow as a player [he just started getting more 3rd down reps]. The Jets don't have to pay Sheldon for 2 more years, Leonard Williams has like 4. They really shouldn't be playing a role in this contract negotiation. Snacks @ 6M vs Wilk at 12M, it's really a no brainer who the Jets should keep. None of our players are Bruce Smith / JJ Watt. Wilk however is the 3rd closest behind Aaron Donald for best interior pass-rusher. JJ is #1. But yeah, let's totally let him go to the Raiders and let that team become miles better than the Jets. I don't understand this thought process 1 bit. I can guarantee you, 6 years down the road we will be asking ourselves why we let this guy go.
What makes you think Mo is looking for $12M a year? I think he would have been locked up long ago at that number.
http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/06/jets_mo_wilkerson_on_cam_jordans_deal_with_saints.html Cameron Jordan makes 11M a season. Mo was clearly upset when Jordan got his contract and it was 11M a year. Since we are all throwing around numbers, I think Wilk wants around the same ball-park, so to me that's 12 to 13 a season. What I truly believe the issue is, is the guaranteed cash in the deal. Cameron got a VERY nice guaranteed deal. It's interesting to see how players react to other players when they receive contract extensions in the social media.
I don't know what the situation actually is but Woody Johnson and the Jets have never been adverse to giving players ballpark deals except at the very top of the spectrum. The issue with Revis is he wanted $16M a year for a bunch of years and a lot of guarantees and he was coming off an injury and two prior holdouts. I'd be shocked if Mo hasn't been offered a ballpark deal similar to the ones that Cameron Jordan, Calais Campbell and Cameron Heyward received. I'd actually be really surprised if he hadn't been offered a better deal than any of those 3 received. His upset when Cameron Jordan got his deal could just as easily have been related to him thinking he deserved a significantly better offer and thinking that Jordan's deal meant the Jets weren't going to budge from their number. Again, none of us know what the deal is at this point but two successive GM's have had a large amount of cap space and made overtures and nothing has come of it. The fact that Mo cut off negotiations at the start of the season suggests that he has a high figure in mind and wanted to put pressure on the Jets to meet it before the season began. Now the Jets options are basically $16M franchise or meeting his demands. Think about it.
For "nitwit team" read Dolphs. Jet fans adore Mo. The rest of the world thinks he is pretty good. I still think Sheldon is a better talent. He was not used properly for that talent this year. Ten cent head, though.
the only guy who is actually going to add to your own total by himself when you sign him is the big time QB. Big time money goes there. Everything else is negotiable.
It'd be a real bummer to see Mo traded, but given the other two DEs and the team's cap situation, it seems inevitable. I also think that Leonard Williams is in for a big jump in year two, much like we saw with Sheldon. The guy is only what, 21? However, if Mo would be willing to go down to just 11 to 12M, I might argue to keep him and play more hybrid looks with Sheldon at OLB in many packages. However, I think Mo playing for 11M per year here might be a fantasy even with high guarantees... But I've been looking into team needs/fit/cap space and am trying to come up with what some offers would look like. Some people suggested the Raiders and Packers as options. I'm thinking a 1st round pick and then a conditional 2017 choice? Or might there be a reasonable player trade possibility?... With a mid/late 1st, the team could address OT, RB, OLB and ILB in the first 3 rounds
The only thing I can't agree with there is Sheldon at OLB. He has no business playing OLB. The Jets need to get a legitimate OLB to play opposite of Mauldin.
How about Chicago as a trade partner? They're moving to a 3-4 and need help at DE. They have the 11th pick, which would be great, but might be high. They do have a lot of cap space, however. Would you trade Mo and a 4th for their #11 pick? Or Mo for their 2nd and a conditional 2nd/3rd in 2017?
I don't see the Bears having any interest in trading for Muhammad Wilkerson. There coach is John Fox( former Denver Bronco head coach) who very familiar with Malik Jackson who they can get in Fa without giving up a pick. ( if they were looking for a De) That Bear defense is more in need of passing rushing outside Lb to replace L Houston. Noah Spence would be an excellent choice for them. Just because a team has Cap space means they are going to want to pay a large contract, and give up draft picks. As talented as Muhammad Wilkerson is, there isn't going to be a large trade market for him. ( different story if he was just a free agent). The Jets just need one team, and I believe the best trade partner might be the Jaguars.
I like the idea if we must trade him, but why would it be high for a Pro Bowl caliber DE who is great vs the run and very good against the pass who is one of the top 2-3 players in the NFL at his position?
The Jets are not going to get good value for Mo.This year the draft is loaded with DL,some scouts are saying up to 7 will be drafted in the 1st round maybe 10 in the first 50 names called.Thats bad for Mo,thats bad for the jets.Sign and trade very unlikely before draft or after.Too much talent in the draft plus he`s coming off an injury wanting big bucks, most teams will go via draft. The jets have to rework Revis,DBrick contract or release at least DBrick,Cro,Polk and others to have a chance to make the cap work. They`ll probably do both but after the 23m guaranteed to Revis is done they have to release him or he has to take a big pay cut or the jets are going to have cap problems for years.Plus he`s not worth 17m in cap space this year.Anybody can play giving 4 yards of cushion to a receiver, you don`t have to pay 17m for that. He`s not the same player and i don`t think he ever came back from that injury.Sorry but thats my opinion.
I disagree. Just because there are a bunch of DTs in the draft that are highly rated, doesn't necessarily mean anything. Sure, it means less pressure on a team that is in desperate need for a DT or a 3-4 DE, but every one of those prospects is just a prospect and potential at this point. Not one of them has done a darned thing in the NFL. Mo is one of the top players in the NFL at his position. He's a Pro Bowler. Whatever team has him can pretty much plug him into their starting lineup for the next 5-10 years and never have to worry about that position again. They don't have to worry about him off the field, either. Cap space of teams will be a big determiner, perhaps the primary determiner, of who might have serious interest. Draft picks bust, and even when they don't, what are the odds that any of them, much less all of them turn out to be as good as Mo? Some teams will obviously opt to roll the dice in the draft. Others will prefer a sure thing. I don't think the broken leg will affect his value one iota. Broken bones don't become chronic issues. They heal stronger. There are a lot of injuries that would definitely take away his value, but thankfully, this wasn't one of them. We are in agreement that Revis isn't worth the money he's getting, but I don't think he's as bad as you make him sound. In the two games where he played the worst, the Jets were using him in primarily zone, and we all know that 's not Revis forte. That said, Mac is stupid if he does anything with Revis' contract this season. It's fully guaranteed. He can release him after this season and save $7.333 million against next year's cap. Revis play is declining. You don't create bigger cap hits in the future for players like that. I'd rather give Mo away that kick dead money into future years for Revis. I doubt that Folk is going anywhere.. Brick, hopefully, will take a pay cut. Hopefully, Cro, Cumberland, Kerley, Bohannon, and quite a few others (they have 23 FAs, but only a handful are worth re-signing) will be gone. They can perhaps restructure Gilchrist and Skrine's contracts and gain some space. I doubt Folk is going anywhere. He's not making that much money and has been very realiable for the Jets. They have a tough enough schedule this coming season without making it a lot tougher by going with a rookie/unproven or lesser kicker than Folk.
Folk has the 9th highest cap hit for kickers (3.3m).Is he in the top ten kickers in the nfl?Are the jets in a cap situation that 3.3m is irrelevant?I agree with you on that Revis is not been used in the right way as a matter of fact i don`t like Kacy Rodgers as the defensive coordinator. With the personal he had i though we be a dominant D,giving receivers to much cushion,no creative blitzes, playing it save...etc.Bowles hired him out of friendship from their time in miami.I also think that Bowles is calling some plays from the sidelines.
I don't follow statistics and rankings, but I know Folk has been "money" for the Jets the last couple of years until he got hurt this past season. I didn't realize his cap figure was that high, so out of desperation, the Jets may do something with regards to him, but I'd still be surprised. Their STs have been bad enough without adding a big question mark at kicker.
Keep an eye out on the Fletcher Cox negotiations everyone. He might get $50 million guaranteed. This will either royally screw the Jets in terms of negotiations or help.
