I gotta go with Mike Tirico, Al Michaels, and Ian Eagle as my faves. They know what theyre talking about and have a good amount of energy without sounding like jackasses. On the flip side, I cant stand Joe Theissman. Hes so useless. He offers nothing as a commentator or a former football player. He also flip flops alot. I remember during the Clinton Portis subject about pre season football, one week he says its absolutely necessary and then the next week hes saying its not necessary. Another thing he does is always mis-predict the play calling. I love when hes like "theyre definately gonna run a play action" and then the team just runs a passing play. Gotta love how Tony Kornheiser calls him out on his bullshit and stupidity. Honorable mention goes to the the walrus looking guy who use to do Sunday Night Football. He made no sense and was always shouting "LOOK AT THIS PLAY!", and it would be some dumb ass play. Dude, why the hell are you getting so excited.
Bill Curry, Don Criqui, and Hubie Brown are my favorites. Bill Maas is pretty bad. Tony Kornheiser is a bust as a commentator. I am happy Matt Millen is the Lions GM because I couldn't stand him as a commentator.
I told myself that I liked Ian Eagle - till last Sunday - he was lowsy in the Browns game Olympic and Playoff hockey got to see the twin towers of hockey calling join forces, Doc Emrick's play by play and John Davidson's color commentary. I'm a Rangers fan and I watch a fair number of Devils games just because Doc calls them. And while Kornheiser isn't a traditional color guy, I think he adds some entertainment, and is necessary in calling out Theismann's bullshit.
I agree with Simmons completely on Michaels. He and Madden are great great announcers in a tight/interesting game. In a blowout, or once things are locked up, they will go off on what seem to be wild tangents and completely ignore the field.
Love(d): Ian Eagle, Marv Albert, Bob Murphy, Joe Buck, Keith Jackson Hate: John Sterling/Susan Waldman, Jon Madden, Dick Vitale By the way I am a Yankee fan.
i don't like any of them. there are some that i don't actively hate but of course i don't remember their names either.
I'm pretty indifferent. I particularly enjoy- Mark Jackson, Marv Albert, Ian Eagle, Howie Rose, Gary Cohen, Gary Clone(Tom McCarthy), Bob Pappa, Wischusen, Dave Jennings, and Paul O'Neill I particularly dislike Michael Kay, John Sterling, Suzyn Waldman, and Randy Cross. I don't understand the big deal about Bob Costas, who I find very run of the mill and boring. -X-
Until the Knicks fired Marv Albert I'd been extremely lucky in my teams having the best PBP guy in each sport. The Dodgers have Vin Scully, who is in a different league than any other baseball broadcaster today, and the Devils have Doc Emrick. As for the Knicks now, I think Mike Breen is way overrated. I liked him on Imus, but he thinks he's doing a radio talk show during the whole game, too much commentary and not enough game.
Vitale is completely unlistenable. Seriously. Usually I can stand even the worst, but I actually can't watch a game with Vitale on it. If it's a must see game I have to go with no sound, which I hate to do.
Like: Tirico, Brad Nessler, Hubie Brown, Greg Gumbel, Mike Patrick, Marv Albert, Bill Walton (i do a great impersonation of this guy). Hate: Madden- he is sooo boring. i cant count the times he put me to sleep. Theismann- someone said earlier. He's clueless, and he flip-flops all the time. And why does he want every team to go for it on 4th down?
Yankees broadcasters are horrendous in general. It doesn't get any worse than John Sterling, Susyn Waldman or Michael Kay. Waldman was a disaster on WFAN too, it was like being yelled at by your mother for 3 hours.
