It seems to me that the sensible thing here would be to lay out contracts with the intent of moving forward with Mo, Snacks, and Leonard. All three appear to be solid, reliable, hard-working, and talented. Richardson may be more talented than any of them, but it isn't going to help the Jets to save their nickles and dimes for the guy only to have him suspended or holding out. Nobody can seriously put either of those scenarios past the guy. I'd hate to tan-and-trade Mo then let Snacks walk, only to have Richardson sitting at home riding out a suspension. I'm not saying we should get rid of him at all-- just that we should plan as though he won't be around, then, if he is around, it's just a bonus.
The question is: if it's between Snacks at $6M on the cap long-term and Mo at $16M what do you do? It's not that hard if that's the situation.
I don't understand where people are getting this 16M from. Wilkerson was CLEARLY upset when Jordan got 11M per year, so if my understanding is correct - Wilk wants around the same ballpark.
Yeah, I don't get it either. It's like someone made up a rumor that Mo wants 16 mil a year, and some Jet fans ran away with it.
Fans want to assume if a player doesn't sign a contract extension right away, then they want an absurd amount of money. I think Mac and Bowles wanted to see how Wilk would fit in the team's long term personnel plans and didn't want to hand out a huge contract in their first off-season together. Makes sense to me, I think they will ultimately tag and resign Wilk later in the off-season. I personally would've resigned him last off-season the moment Cameron Jordan from the Saints received that 11m / yr contract, but that's me.
If Snacks & Mo are asking for the same amount of money, then you tell Snacks to take a long walk on a short pier. If the Jets were facing an easy choice like that, there would be no debate on these forums concerning this topic. The REAL decision is Mo vs. (Snacks & 8M+ on salary cap)
It's not between Snacks and Mo, it's between Snacks+two other solid starters (a tackle and an OLB) or Mo. By the time we have to pay Sheldon we should be able to cut Revis.
We should sign Snacks and trade Wilk away, it might not be the popular opinion but we are loaded at one position. It's time to spread that talent out so we can actually win and not have holes at key positions. I love Wilk he's an all pro should've been a pro bowler a long time ago. But at this point it doesn't even make sense to extend him. We are in position to already have a pro bowl caliber backup ready to play full time in Leonard Williams and we already have Sheldon Richardson who talent wise is probably the best of the 3, and he's under contract for another 2 years. Trade em for a 1st + and more and let's continue to build this team
He's been the best for a few seasons too. I'M we'd notice a big difference in run defense with another NT. According to overthecap, the highest paid 3-4 NT last year made an average of $4.5m per year. I'd definitely sign him back for about 4 years and $18-20m
Because if all Mo wanted was $11 million per season, I think re-signing him would have been a slam dunk and Mac's first act as GM of the Jets. The fact that it didn't happen speaks volumes to me. As good as he is, $11 million per season is too much for a DL that isn't an elite pass rusher.
Mo is more than worth 11 mil per year. He also isn't elite, but he's a very good/great pass rusher who is also elite at stopping the run.
Superior cost-wise, yes. But I raise you MoWilk - Richardson - Leonard. I think this is the more likely outcome, unless they try to deal Sheldon. Cimini seems to think that MM is determined to sign Wilkerson. I don't like the idea of a home grown Jet becoming a pro bowler and then walking or getting dealt. That is so SOJ. It's time to change that noise. Plus if Wilkerson leaves I'll be stuck with a useless forum name. We can't have that.
