"The other option would be... the Jets probably get Monroe for nothing". I'll take Monroe for nothing, Alex.
It's going to be hard to trade Mo even if that's the right move, which is not clear. I think the Jets are going to have to franchise him and wait the injury out before they decide what to do. All their maneuverability around the situation has momentarily vanished and won't be back until Mo is back on the field and playing. It was a horrible break for Mo and nearly as bad for the Jets.
I wish we could re-sign Mo, but if that were going to happen, I think it already would have. I think he's asking for too much money. I like Mo and agree that he is the team's best player, but let's face it...for $15 million per year (which he is likely to cost), the Jets could add 2-3 very good players that fill holes/address some other needs, and that could make the team better than just keeping Mo. They can't pay Mo, Snacks, Richardson and then Williams. That's too much cap space tied up in the DL, and even with all that talent on the DL, they still can't generate a consistent pass rush. We need speed, coverage and play-making ability at the LB positions.
They're not gonna give up 2 young Pro Bowl caliber guys for Mo. That'd be like us giving up Pryor & Leonard Williams for one player at a different position, no matter how good he is you lose too much talent, you're just creating more holes.
You can only lose with a move like that. We as fans want the 1st round pick but giving up one of the best defenders in the league (age 25), you better get something rock solid in return. Somebody who can play, a proven guy who can have an impact. Picks are hit & miss. You can't win. Even if you hit, if you strike gold, you have a guy that MIGHT be able to develop into the same guy that Mo is. That's the best possible outcome. To have somebody be as good as Mo. I don't like those odds. I rather get a quality player who is proven, who doesn't need to be worked on for 5 years until he's a Pro Bowler. That'd be Stafford, Osemele, somebody like that. If we don't have a choice I'd settle for a 1st round pick + then some (mid round, 2nd round next year etc.).
Agreed. But this is a rare situation of 2 teams having 2 elite players they can't or won't re-sign because they don't want to tie up that much money to a specific position, and both teams having holes that they could fill by basically swapping those players. Then you can afford to lock them up, you fill a huge need, you don't let those guys just walk out the door for nothing. That's very rare, it would make sense. Is it likely? I doubt it. But it's worth considering IMO. Letting Mo walk is not an option. If you can't re-sign him you have to trade him. The same goes for the Ravens I think.
Why does everyone seem resigned to the fact that we cant get a deal done with Mo. They guy is from NJ and is very involved in his old community there. I see Mo staying a Jet & this is what I'd personally want.
