If I am not mistaken he won some award as asst coach of year las year... he is a good coach and kept AZ in games last year when they had a lot of injuries on D... I live in AZ I know...but don't let facts get in the way of your factless opinion
Seriously? And what makes you so knowledgeable that you feel competent and qualified to so harshly judge/assess Bowles' abilities? Do you have 40 years experience playing and coaching football? Did you play on a SB winner? You're truly making yourself sound like a clueless dumbass. So tell us great master of all defensive football knowledge, what would you do differently? What kind of adjustments is he going to make to STs in the middle of the season? Where's he supposed to find a PR or KR, or better punter on the roster? Where's he going to find a better STs coach in the middle of the season? Is he supposed to start playing starters on STs?
Hopefully Petty will be so good in off season workouts and in OTAs, mini-camp and TC next season that he gives the Jets no choice but to name him the starter. I'm totally with you on Fitz not starting again next season. If they want to keep him strictly as a veteran backup and to further mentor Petty and/or Geno (if he's still on the team), then fine.
Nothing wrong with going 4-12 or even 2-14 when you have no real chance at a championship. Maybe some of you enjoy being mediocre 8-8, or one of those weak playoff teams that make the postseason ever year and get bounced by the real contenders, but as far as I am concerned, either be really good, or be really bad. Both of those are better than being stuck in no-man's land like the Jets mostly are. Having a really bad record for a few years in a row usually allows a team to really fill up on quality talent. You get better chances are quality quarterbacks, and every other position. So yeah, you suck for a few years, but at least you get to watch exciting young players develop for the future, and given decent management, eventually turn into something special. Beats rooting for a bunch of 30+ year olds going for a 8-8, but that's just me.
I can tolerate a rebuild if there is a concise plan and we have young players that are worth developing. But with that said this market won't put up with a rebuild like you're suggesting,
We aren't even in rebuilding mode right now, we are re-LOADING. The Jets are ready to compete right now, all we have to do is get hot at the right time before the playoffs, and we can beat anyone.
Young players who "develop" by playing on a team where losing is acceptable and there are no vets around to show how to win... "develop" into losers who stay that way.
That's why you need an owner with vision and balls. Owners like Dolan and Woody have neither and let themselves be led around by fans and media, ironically screwing the same fans in the process. The fans might grumble for a season or two, and the tickets sales might go down for a while, but if the owner is passionate about winning and building a great brand, they will eat that, most of these guys are billionaires. And as soon you have some exciting young players, the fans will start buying tickets and merchandise again. Remember how we had a bunch of these "losers" in Kotite years, and then suddenly Parcells comes in and overnight they all turn into winners. Good players are good players, and as long as you have a decent organizational culture, this isn't an issue. Wanting to build a real championship contender instead of an also-ran is against everything good about athletics? Ok....
I disagree. When a team is perenially 8-8, 7-9 or 9-7, they are mired in mediocrity. They're not good enough to make the playoffs, and too good to have good draft position, and they are basically screwed to remain stuck in mediocrity, unless they pull a Tanny and trade away half their draft picks to try to get one or two topflight players that they hope can put them over the top, but that never works. Football, above all other sports, is a team game. Yes, a star caliber players at a couple of positions (QB, pass rushing OLB, and maybe RB) can help elevate a team and can carry it for a few games, but they can't carry a lousy team for an entire season. It takes depth, and quality all over the roster. You'll never acquire the talent your team needs if you're always drafting in the 15-25 range. The OP is definitely correct that it's better for the team to suck for 2-3 years reload on talent (if they have a quality GM that has an eye for talent), than sit at 7-9 or 8-8 for a decade. The Jets problem is that Tanny left the cupboard bare by constantly trading away draft picks and not having a clue what he was doing, and Idzik had little or no eye for talent. It will ALWAYS kill me that that moron had 12 draft picks a couple of years ago and the Jets have almost nothing to show for it. It's those kinds of things that kill a franchise for a 5-10 years. Talent-wise, if one has a quality GM, it's almost always easier to turn a team around in a season or two if one is drafting in the top ten or top 5 in those two seasons, than it is if one is drafting in the 15-25 range.
Easier said than done, but it can work if you bring in a gm and coach that are both proven. Like if we were to hire Ozzie and Cowher and decide that we were going to rebuild, those guys have the clout that Idzik and Rex didn't.
The comparison is inapt. If you don't know why that's your problem. The real issue here is whether it is okay to accept a culture of losing, and ignore the way that affects the team on a going forward basis. I am very skeptical of the approach you suggest. Add in that you are a Smith Fan, and I don't see much gained here by furhter discussion.
You guys have some weird depressive view of the world that keeps you from seeing things clearly. Look at the standings from 2011, 2012, or 2013 or 2014... which of those bottom dwelling teams has suddenly become a consistent Super Bowl contender because of your brilliant let's-be-losers-for-a-few-years strategy?
LOL what a stupid, moronic post. You really, honestly believe that Woody allows himself to be led around by the media and fanbase? Just an absolutely baseless assertion. Woody is a GREAT owner with vision for this organization.
Sure, let's do that. The Giants were able to win 2 superbowls because they went 4-12 that one year and got Eli. The Colts have been a perennial playoff contender because of the two shitty years they had allowing them to nab first Manning, and then Luck. The 49ers had a heck of a run recently (Superbowl appearance, 3 championship games in a row) based on them having 5-7 down years in 2000s which allowed them to fill up on talent. Oakland has been horrible for years, but now they are filled up on quality young talent (Mack, Cooper, Carr, etc) and are on an upward trajectory. Teams like Tampa and Tennesee are probably set for years because of their terrible year in 2014. Even our buddies in Buffalo are loaded with talent because of those years they were bad. Now, of course that's only part of the story, you still need a good GM and coach and luck and all that, but these teams are in a position to be successful, we are not.
Small problem - the Giants didn't draft Eli. San Diego did and he in turn refused to play for them because they sucked so bad.
