You can also make the argument that when you play the Patriots at home, you want to make sure points are getting put on the board. Falling too far behind 10-0 and being behind two scores on the patriots is a dangerous situation to be in. I completely respect and understand your opinion, but I think getting points whenever you can get them in Foxboro is the best bet.
I kep wondering what offensive line was out there handling our "scary" D line in the second half? If the Jets had gone for it on 4th they would have lost b 2 TDs. You take those kinds of chances when your D is dominating.
This was the most critical call of the game. You use two downs to make six yards. You never give Brady the ball back with the lead and five minutes to play if you have any other option available.
Yet the fact is that they scored 2 TDs in the fourth. I cannot help but feel our D changed their scheme. The Pats O does what they do. They do it every drive: throw every down. Are not O lineman supposed to wear out from pass blocking? Seemed to be the other way around. We did not get to Brady in the 4th, or the 3rd for that matter. They try to score throughout he air all the time. I think losing Pryor actually hurt. After he went out the D seemed to start going south a bit. But it could have been a change in scheme to a more cautious approach. If you do not get to Brady you might as well go home.
I have been a huge Fitz fan but it is so obvious he is no more than a game manager and can't be expected to bring us back when we fall behind. Throw in bad coaching and we were doomed once they took the lead. If he had any kind of arm at all I have no doubt Devin Smith could have streaked downfield and gotten the score, instead he tries that back shoulder crap to somebody like that. He hasn't been able to hit Smith on any pass he has tried all year.
I've been a big fan of Bowles since he got here, but his first big move I questioned was hiring Gailey. I am not inclined to complain about the OC, but I think some of the criticisms about the JEts' effort here are primarily Gailey's responsibility. I do agree that 3rd and 17 play was perhaps the biggest play of the game, and that is on Bowles and the D. But there were a number of issues on O. What was with the play selection when the Jets had the ball near the end zone, and decided to make Cumberland, Stacy and Owazu the intended receivers? Ftr I agree Cumby was interfered with, but going away from Marshall, Decker and even Kerley there was questionable. I also doubt Bowles made the decision to run out hte clock at the end of the first half all on his own. But overall I still think he's doing a good job, and I want to limit my criticisms of him.
BB, I'm with ya on the Gailey hire. I thought two years away from the game was a bit too long to come back and be effective. Especially with the rule changes and to have to "coax" Gailey out of retirement. TB is a defensive guy first so its no surprise that his first OC hire would be a safe bet. However, if there are two over reaching issues with this offense, it would have to be Qb talent and play selection. Both are fixable but will take time.
We watched two good teams go toe to toe for 4 quarters yesterday. The Pats are a little better and made a few more plays than we did. The next time it's on our turf.
next time hopefully we have a healthy Pryor the whole game and a healthy Ivory. Pryor leaving the game hurt us in the middle of the field and with Gronkowski. Also, I don't think NE will be able to use the same gameplan twice. Brady was masterful but they avoided the sidelines (Revis/Cromartie) a lot. I would hope Bowles has a response for next game. I also don't think you can get away with not even trying to run the ball like that too much. Emphasize "think" on that one though because I suppose they could with Brady. either way it should be a good game and hopefully week 16 when we play again the Jets still have a shot at the division
These are fair points, but imo the game was quite winnable, and it's tough to leave a winnable game on the table, especially against those guys.
I read some things about the 3rd and 17 in Newsday: http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/secondary-guessing-jets-mistake-leads-to-key-pat-s-completion-1.11009150 . Bowles took the blame because he said he made an adjustment on the sideline before the play and it wasn't clear with the safety who was beat by Edelman, Dion Bailey. He was in the game due to injuries. Brady saw his number and pounced on it. But even though it was the worst play of the day for the Jets there were others like going on 3rd down long to Smith instead of just trying a better percentage play. There were plenty of times when they weren't playing it scared or ultra conservative.
Go figure- I personally thought Gailey was a real bright spot yesterday. I honestly thought it was Gailey's best game here. He had a good gameplan and the passing the ball right out of the gate caught NE by surprise. Marshall was doubled the whole game - that made finding him more difficult. Aggressively going to Decker (1 on 1) throughout the first half was killing NE. Also- he has been calling a lot of screen passes this year but NE is perhaps the best defense at defending the screen because they have smart players that recognize the screen. Everybody tries to beat that defense with screens because its safe and you want to play a little safe with them because turnovers will kill you. And they end up shooting themselves in the foot because the Pats are a great screen defense. No doubt because of that and because Gailey usually calls a lot of them- NE was expecting a lot of screens... What does Gailey do?? he didn't fall into that trap. (buffalo fell into that trap early in their matchup with NE this season. calling a lot of screens and found themselves down big until they abandoned that and started throwing downfield) Also a lot of his playcalls were no doubt foiled by passes being batted down. NE did a good job recognizing Fitzpatrick can be weak there. I mean Gailey is calling games with a weak-armed QB that has trouble getting the ball over the line. I mean, that kind of limits him big time, especially when its going to take 30 points to beat the offense on the other side. I thought Gailey did a great job considering those circumstances. Also, he did go to Marshall in the red zone and the guy dropped it. The Cumberland play was a great call that caught them by surprise and should've been completed if not for the pass being a little off and the pass interference. They also went to Decker in the red zone and Fitz threw his back shoulder pass when Decker was trying to go over top. Those 3 things were about execution- - not poor coaching/play calling
This fan is unwilling at this point to give this game more than its worth. That is one game in the standings. To get to a championship the club will have to go through the Patriots probably at Foxboro. There is a long way to go before that. If that Brady fumble was not kicked back to him the game might have gone the other way. Get ready for Oakland. They played very well yesterday. There are many more battles to be fought. The season is young anything good and bad can happen.
That's is somewhat true. I think the pats go for that 4th and a blade of grass, even in their own territory, even in the first half.....and get it. That is the difference with that team. I cant really blame Bowles. We cant forget hes a rookie HC....with a stingy defense he trusts.
