Fun article. And as much as everybody agrees Petty is NOT nfl-ready and should NOT be thrown into the fire, this is exactly what we did with Geno Smith (and Mark Sanchez before him).

It will be fun having a what looks to be a decent QB take a few seasons and a few training camps to mature and learn the speed of the game before running the show for real.

What the Pats are doing with Jimmy Garoppolo, we can finally do with Petty.

Start him when Geno gets suspended for cheating?

Are we really so QB deprived that our fan base expects a 4th round QB to amount to anything more than a serviceable backup? Last time I checked Petty hasn't had a Wilson-esque camp. And last time I checked 4th round qbs don't amount to shit. Idk, the Jets have great luck at the position so who knows what'll happen.

    He's the future imo.

I'm afraid that Geno will turn into Alex Smith and be just good enough not to bench, but not bad enough to put Bryce Petty in a couple years down the line. I don't want to miss the chance of developing Bryce into the starting QB. He's the best raw passing-QB prospect this franchise has drafted since Chad Pennington.

Of course he will take time, and I won't be pushing for his arrival until 2 years from now. But at that time, you will hear me screaming for his name, so fair warning. ;)

Nah dude I think you were on point, we should be expecting him to be the backup not the future

I'd say that's a fair expectation considering the number of starting QBs in the league that were drafted after the first 2 rounds.

Unless of course the Jets struck gold. I guess we're due. 4th round QB out of an up-tempo spread offense. I don't see much reason to be optimistic

I definately like the kid. But whether he makes a decent starter or career backup is anybody's guess.

I watched him play at least 10 full college games. He is raw and doesn't come from a pro-style offense but he is tough and he is a gamer. It remains to be seen if he can adjust to the speed and the complexity of the NFL but he certainly has all the intangibles.

For now Bryce will pay the price.

He is prob smarter than Geno and that's a plus.

It's awesome that the Jets have a legitimate developmental prospect as their third QB now, as opposed to camp fodder turned Canton bound clipboard holders. Petty has all the tools to succeed. His strength, and his weakness currently, is upstairs. He's a gamble worth taking and if it doesn't go the Jets way, then it won't cost the Jets years of potentially wasted success.

Petty sounds intelligent and of high character, but we already knew that. For non-football reasons (i.e., Richardson, Richardson, and Richardson), picking a solid human like Petty was an excellent, excellent choice. (That's not to say any of the other picks or additions aren't great people, just that the Jets can use more of those right now.)

From a football standpoint, it never hurts to pickup a raw, talented kid. Unlike Sanchez and Smith, the Jets seem to be doing right by Petty in giving him the chance to develop. I really hope that this front office and coaching staff stick, so that he does get the chance to grow into a stable system. Even if Petty never catches fire, and ends up being a solid career backup (does "spot starter" sound better?), that's a major win out of a 4th round pick.

Your pessimism is totally understandable given the Jets' past experience with failed draft picks, and with QBs taken that late as well. Still, Petty has potential. The comments I've seen said that he can play QB, that those skills are evident. What is holding him back is learning this offense and adapting to the speed of the game and complexity of defenses in the NFL. He's an intelligent young man, with a high football intelligence. He's a hard worker. If any 4th round pick can make it, he can. That doesn't mean he will. Even if all he amounts to is a serviceable backup, is that really so awful? How long has it been since the Jets have had even a serviceable backup at QB? Vick certainly wasn't. Neither was Bollinger, Quincy Carter, Brett Ratliff, Patrick Ramsey, or Kellen Clemens. Sanchez wasn't. Mark Brunell wasn't. Greg McElroy wasn't.

Does it go back to Chad? If so, we're talking 14-15 years. I mean, heck, most of our QBs throughout our history have sucked balls, what can you expect from the backups?

Having Petty as a serviceable backup at QB would be a HUGE step forward for this franchise. LOL

If Geno turns into Alex Smith we are easily playoff bound with this defense and weapons. Alex Smith almost brought his team there without throwing a touchdown to a receiver. Say what you want about Alex Smith but he certainly can distribute the ball well and keep the chains moving for the most part. He's not a deep playoff quarterback but he just simply doesn't turn the ball over.
