As has been mentioned, it's just conjecture..... the departure of Abraham just seems to make a switch more plausable. I don't agree that Vilma and Robertson have no home in a 3-4. The same was said about Zach Thomas being all wrong for that scheme, but he landed in the pro bowl anyway. Vilma can do it too. This team is only two players away from running a hybrid 3-4, 4-3, the way NE does. A NT, and an LB. People think it's a slam dunk that Robertson can't play DE in a 3-4.... but why? based on his college scouting report that is 4 years old? Is he a prototypical DE in a 3-4? No. But, we're also talking a possible hybrid too. Pouha may yet become a NT in a 3-4...... and people who say a guy that was drafted as a project after one year is a bust have no clue. How many KNOWN projects have rookie break-out seasons? But, that is what most people seem to have expected. We'll know what Mangini has planned after the draft.... in the meantime, we as fans will guess at what might happen. And that is all everyone is doing.... why do you think this potential move to a 3-4 is something that we all think is a given? We're just bouncing around the possibilities, that's all.
I don't see us picking defense in the first round. Maybe not even the second round. We have a ton of needs on offense.
So that means Dewayne Robertson squared (+) the square root of James Reed would give us a NT? We better have a 340 pound NT through FA on the team on draft day if you want to switch to a 3-4 because there's no way we can draft defense in the first 2 rounds. Wouldn't mind the Hawk pick for the 4-3 though...
...here's the thing, the way I see it. Does anybody remember if the Chargers needed help on the offensive side of the ball the year they took Junior Seau? Of course not. All anybody remembers is the guy's going to the hall of fame and was awesome for that franchise for a long time. Bottom line, when a special guy like Hawk is available, I say you take him. We'll see, there's only 5,000,000 things that could happen before the draft...
Judging by the Chargers using their next pick on a linebacker as well, I think it is safe to say they needed help there.
Guys, I was thinking the jets have to clear the cap room by the end of next week to franchise Abe, right? So I think the FO will be like a war zone. Anyway, I was thinking, could the jets cut a bunch of people to clear the cap for the trade, and promise them "on the side" that when Abe was traded they would be re-signed? I know it sounds like dirty pool but, At least we pick up a pick for the guy as opposed to letting him walk.
I agree. The Jets defense is good, but not great. The offense of '05 was flat-out lifeless. The Jets need to balance it out a bit because a consistently 3 & out offense = a tired defense, making them less effective.
If we trade Abraham I hope we aren't just doing it for a lateral move at best with AJ Hawk (who I am quite fond of, btw--we just don't need another LB.) If we trade John Abraham I really hope that it somehow culminates in the Jets drafting Mario Williams.
I posted on this topic weeks ago. I think it is very likely Mangini will take Hawk. It is even more likely now that Bradway is out of the way. Most of the rest of the Draft and FA pickups will be offense. I just can't imagine a protege of both Parcells and Bellicheck turning down the best linebacker in the draft.
Hahahahaha nah, I just went literally to the oldest thread, just clicked 1787th page and thought it was the only thread that was related to something nowadays since A.J. Hawk was a FA this offseason.
