Not a surprise. The Jets have a 12+ win roster from players 2 through 53. Only problem is that the QB is the worst starting QB in the NFL going into this year.
As stated in another thread we had two QB solutions opened up in the draft. Austin Davis or Mike Glennon, both have show more ability in less playing time with a fraction of the reps. Davis stats last year with no reps coming of the bench. 180 Completions 63.4 Completion Percentage 2,001 Yards 12 TDs 9 INTs
SHOWN MORE Geno got all the reps from day 1 and was a high draft pick. He has been handed the starting job 3 years in a row. Davis was an undrafted free agent who had 63.4 Completion Percentage and 4/3 TD to INT rate after coming off the bench with limited preparation. Geno would be grateful to have a 1/1 TD to INT rate. His 25 TDs to 34 INTs is what makes him the worst starting QB in the NFL.
Well, thank God we don't have Sanchez to hold this 4th best roster back. Imagine how low our ranking would have been with that bum at the helm.
Geno has to be the luckiest 2nd round pick QB in NFL history or has incriminating pictures of every offensive coach to have coached this team in the past 3 years. It makes no sense.
He sucks too. It's not like he would have made us a Super Bowl contender. Is he better than Geno? Probably, but who isn't?
By "years" I meant the last 2 and by "very good" I mean around the QB. If you've followed them you'd know how well that team plays with chicken shit at QB; they'd easily have been playoff teams with anything out of the position both of the last 2 years. It's hard to prep a quarterback for the entire offseason and then not have him play at all when it actually counts.
Sanchez under MM or CG would be better than Geno. Sanchez was looking good his last season here until Rex through him to the dogs. Sanchez also had a descent last year, a lot better than Smith.
as also stated in another thread, Austin Davis and Mike Glennon are nothing special. Any other team without a "franchise QB" also had the same options and all opted not to take them. Austin Davis did a respectable job under the circumstances, but teams also had zero tape on him. He definitely did a nice job but he's a backup level QB.
I wanted the Jets to match the tender put on Davis this off season. IIRC, it was only 1M or so .In particular, Davis' long and intermediate game seemed a fit. If he can be acquired cheaply before camp, I'd like to have him because, IMHO, he has better pro potential than Smith and Petty (at this point). However, after camp, his value diminishes (because the reps and potential chemistry lost from missing the reps). Then again, I'm just a fan so what do I know? I'm willing to trust that Macc is investigating every single option to improve the position. Yes, Eli will make the HoF based on his performance in two Super Bowls against the most villainous franchise in recent memory.
I get we all would have liked to bring Austin Davis in...But can we PLEASE stop the overhype train on Austin Davis on this board? It's AUSTIN DAVIS. From Rotoworld back when Davis signed his tender: Rams re-signed restricted free agent QB Austin Davis to a one-year, $1.542 million contract. The Rams tendered Davis at the lowest level, and it wouldn't have required any other team to part with a draft pick to sign him. It's a sign neither St. Louis nor the rest of the league thinks that highly of Davis. He'll compete with Case Keenum and a rookie for the Rams' backup job behind new starter Nick Foles. So the Rams place the lowest possible tender on him, and the entire league passes yet the Jets somehow missed the boat? He's just not that good guys. The guys is competing with Case Keenum to BACK UP Nick Foles. Stop the Davis pole smoking.
If my post reads as "Davis pole smoking", that wasn't my intent. Allow me to clarify: Davis should have been brought in because he was cheap, has better results than Smith, and is more pro ready that Petty. Not that Davis is the best QB ever.
Your username is the same as what the league thinks of Austin Davis. He might not even survive as a backup in this league. It's clear our staff wanted developmental 3rd year player (Geno), a veteran backup to teach (Fitz) and to leave a roster spot for their mid round rookie whomever that ended up being. The coaching staff feels much better giving Geno a chance with his physical skills which is that of an NFL quarterback. They seem to think they can get him righe between the ears. That remains to be seen as I'm not entirely sure you can teach a guy that he needs to throw a ball in the dirt if the screen pass isn't there, or that he should throw the ball out of bounds rather than run out of bounds two yards before the line of scrimmage. However, I feel better moving forward with Geno and hoping these things are taught and click together than with a player who doesn't even have the physical skillset to play in the league. Draft picks are so valuable in today's league with the way the new CBA is, teams don't want to piss way a 6th or 7th on a potential camp cut that isn't their own draft mistake.
Very true but Geno seems to be lacking the most important skills. Brains and instinct something that can't be taught. JMHO
That could be true. We shall see. He certainly has no excuses now, with Brandon Marshall, Devin Smith, and Chan Gailey added this offseason. He's had 2 full seasons to develop, now in year 3 we should see significant improvement, especially with the aforementioned additions. It's time for Geno to emerge, and if not we have Bryce Petty waiting in the wings, with a year to hold the clipboard and learn. It's a good situation.
we have a solid team outside QB, but lets not overstate it... i dont think our offensive line, special teams, inside linebackers, or safties. our wideouts look good but they are also older (marshall) and both coming off a year where they had some injury issues
QB’s with higher winning percentages than Eli Manning… Tom Brady Peyton Manning Drew Brees Ben Roethlisberger Phillip Rivers Tony Romo Joe Flacco Aaron Rodgers Matt Ryan Michael Vick Alex Smith Andy Dalton Russell Wilson Andrew Luck Colin Kaepernick Nick Foles Brian Hoyer
