I don't have an Insider subscription, but they show the first part of the article, and the Jets got the highest grade of any NFL team for the 2015 offseason (not surprisingly, although ESPN supposedly has an anti-Jets bias). I thought they had an amazing offseason, and I'm glad to see the experts over at ESPN agree! I've never been more optimistic about an upcoming season in my 30+ years of following the Jets! "Analysis: The Jets commanded the only A grade overall and the only A-plus from an individual voter. Riddick liked their moves that much. He worked with Todd Bowles in Philadelphia and he believes in the Jets' new head coach, calling him a "dynamite" hire. Adding Revis in free agency, Marshall by trade and a luxury first-round choice in Williams separated the Jets. "It is hard to find a fault with anything they did from coaching to free agency to the draft," Riddick said. "It is all about the QB. Can Chan Gailey get Geno Smithto not be the cause of losing games?" Polian said the football gods smiled on the Jets when Revis became available and New York was able to sign him away from its top division rival. "Defensively, there may not be many teams better," Polian said. "You just cannot waste a defense like that with a quarterback who turns it over. The question is, does Geno all of a sudden become a quarterback? Or does it have to be Fitzpatrick?" Fitzpatrick headed my list of value signings in free agency based mostly on a statistical profile suggesting he has been better than his reputation suggests. Tennessee was certainly worse off without him, and it's fair to wonder if Houston upgraded by swapping out Fitzpatrick for Brian Hoyer. Fitzpatrick has generally been associated with horrible defenses (since 2010, only Tony Romohas gotten less defensive support among players with at least 40 starts). "Fitzpatrick is not good, but he is a major upgrade," Williamson said." http://espn.go.com/nfl/insider/story/_/id/12913383/offseason-grades-all-32-teams-nfl
Sweet, now let's have the best regular season as well. Winning the division and having a Jets home playoff game would be awesome.
Winning the offseason doesn't mean much but it's hard to argue that we didn't downgrade at any position. Even upgraded what was a huge strength in our dline. I know lots didn't love the Harris contract but without him it would've created a huge hole. And even where we aren't necessarily "strong" (QB, RB, OL, LB) we added pieces that create competition. Yeah the results still need to be on the field but the front office gave us more than any Jets fan could've imagined on Week 17 of last season.
Really. Who gives a fuck what they say. Three years ago we were the laughing stock in all sports to them. They build ya up and tear ya down...
We already had it ,You missed it man it was great Sonny Weaver JR called Mike Mac the GM of the decade
Jets had the best off season, unless you consider the QB position. Which just happens to be the MOST important position on the team.
what team had a good offseason at QB in the NFL outside of picking 1 or 2 in the draft, which is still TBD results wise? If there were STRONG QBs out there and the Jets whiffed then let's talk about it. I never understood comments all offseason "good signing, still no QB go get a QB". My question was always, who?
I was at that game with my father and uncle. As the game ended and confetti was streaming down, my uncle turned to me and said, "Enjoy it now, because we won't see this happen again for a long time." Oh, how right he was.
My dad was a season ticket holder at that point, and I used to go with him to the games. He was already at the point of being fully drawn into the dark side. Once Chrebet fumbled in the Bears game, he raged how he wouldn't waste money on playoff tickets that the Jets weren't getting into anyway. I disagreed vehemently. Fast forward to today, I can't blame him for not wanting to cut a check, but damn I wish I was at that game.
That's an excellent point. From what we're hearing now, Geno has made big strides this offseason. They say he's matured and the light seems to have come on for him. Plus Bowles and Gailey have been studying his game tape and apparently liked what they saw, at least enough to not go crazy in the offseason trying to replace him. I was watching the Jets-Bears week 3 game from last year, the monday night game, which I still have DVR'd (not much good on TV nowadays). and Jon Gruden was talking up Geno Smith, saying "he's getting better", and "he came from a spread system at west virginia, with not a lot of plays, and he's had to learn hundreds of plays in the Jets' west coast system...he's clearly more confident and more comfortable now." And that was only week 3 last season....now I know he had a rocky season the rest of the way, but his receivers were the often injured Eric Decker, and Jeremy Kerley, David Nelson, rookie Jace Amaro, Chris Owusu....he probably had the worst group of receivers in the entire league last season, and the bumbling marty morninweg as his OC. It's very possible that the Jets realize that we don't need a new QB, we have Geno Smith! He may very well be about to emerge big time this season!
Really, though, what were the options at QB? Nothing great. Overpay to get a rookie, or trade half the team for Phillip Rivers? I think we had just about the best possible offseason we could have had in our circumstances. QB is still an issue, but, it's not like there was a Joe Montana free agent out there we could scoop up and win a super bowl with. Idzik had 12 picks and little to show from free agency other than Decker, and we paid for it last year. We aren't a 12 win team, but we aren't a 12 loss team either- even with issues at QB. We still have needs, but there's good talent all around and depth in a number of spots. No more Clyde Gates bullshit out there. Even an Atheist can say "Thank God" for that one.
IDK if we have enough yet to say he's made big strides and the light is on....But that's certainly the hope. I know we all HATE Geno and think he sucks, and let's face it...He HAS sucked. But at the same time he has shown glimpses of looking REAL good. I personally am curious to see what he does with the following: 1) Actual passing options. There were times when his #1 receiver was Clyde Gates and David Nelson. 2) A system that fits his abilities. The WCO was NEVER a good fit for Geno skill wise....He is the opposite of a WCO QB. It was a case of the Jets trying to fit a square into a circle. Let's see how he looks in Chan's offense which will be a MUCH better fit. This is the first time the team will be fitting the system to the QB not trying to force the QB into the system. 3) A situation where there isn't a pending or ongoing war between coach and FO. Those 3 things are critical for a young QB. And I think this is the first time since Geno has been here that he is being put in a position to succeed. Which is why I reserve a glimmer of hope for Geno. The question will be, does Geno just suck or was he put in a horrid position to fail and will these changes allow him to take steps forward? This is probably why I'm not jumping off a cliff like most are about the Jets saying Geno is still the starter. We very well might already have our guy, I think we all just don't know but will know with certainty this year. Again, Geno has absolutely sucked the last 2 years, but I am not sure if it's because he just sucks or was put in a position to purely suck. I lean toward the latter, and support him until further notice.
