You have valid concerns but you didn't mention one big parameter in all these calculations. Salary cap. Your entire DL in Wilkerson, Coples and Richardson will soon have their rookie contracts expire. If you want to maintain the elite status of your line, you have to be able to draft smart so that you don't end up paying each of the current guys 10-15 mil a year. This was a great value pick. Yes it is not a need now, but it will be a need down the road.
to draft a player that we already have complete studs at and young is completely moronic, and I thought rex was the idiot drafting all DL people
Jets are no longer a team with a D-line, but a D-line with a team. Still, can't blame 'em for drafting the best player in the draft when he fell into their laps.
I believe in BPA if it's a need for the team. Williams is not a need for this team. White was the BPA "NEED" for this team. If your going to succeed in the playoffs you need balance on offense and defense and the Jets aren't even close to that. If they had taken White they would have been that much closer to that balance. The Jets basically swapped Marshall for White with the Bears. At least White will still be with the Bears in 2016.
The flip side to the cap hit argument is that if you want to maintain your stud DL it's going to cost you too much in cap hit to be affordable to sink so much into one position. Furthermore, because it is so expensive, you might have to let some of your stud DL walk away in free agency for free because you can't afford to pay them all. I mean, in general, you obviously want to replace various positions to maintain a level of play...which is exactly why it would have made more sense to draft either White who can take over for the aging Marshall or Beasley who can take over for the aging Pace or struggling Coples. Williams isn't taking over for anyone who is leaving he's just taking up space and snaps from existing, capable and young players. I don't really see how it would be a need down the road unless the Jets are sure they aren't going to re-sign Big Mo as they would have years and years of Big Mo and Richardson. I don't think they needed to draft a DL for the next 5 years barring someone leaving or injuries.
I'm stoked. Possibly the best player in the draft falls to us, giving us options if we can't strike a deal with Mo, not to mention the absolutely beastly front 4 man front combinations we can send out. I think it is going to force other teams to keep an extra man in, either RB or TE to help pick them up, and with Revis and Cro in the backfield we can hope for the elimination of another offensive weapon at the same time, severely limiting a QBs options, and taking away the effectiveness of teams double teaming any one of our guys as it automatically opens holes for the others to burst through, and with Bowles being a known blitzer, teams won't know what hit them or where to try and stop the walls from crumbling. I think we got a gift from the heavens. The only other player I would have wanted at our pick was Cooper. I'm going to go out on a limb and say anyone else, at least this coming year, won't make nearly the same impact on the field for the teams that took them.
This makes no sense at all. The reason the D-Line cap number is so high is because we have been drafting D-Line in the first round every single year. Obviously our cap is going to suck when we are wasting 50% of the cap on the same position. Pay Mo Wilk pay Sheldon Richardson draft someone else OR don't pay either and keep drafting replacements? Option 1 makes more sense when trying to put a complete team together.
really the Jets swapped Marshall and Williams with White and a 5th rounder. pretty safe to say the Jets are on the better end of that talent.
So, the plan for next season is to punch the other teams QB in the face so much he plays like our QB or the backup is put in.
His shoulder issue concerns me but at this point who knows. Williams has superstar potential that IMO only one other player in this draft has (Cooper). So that's good enough for me.
I love the pick. as you mentioned, mariotta wasnt there. we took the best player in the draft. it wasnt a "need" on the surface but when you look deeper here are things i see: 1) You beat brady with pressure in his face. we now have the best defensive line in football and have 3 guys who can al blow you up up the middle 2) We are going to play ALOT of nickel, and pressure form the front 4 out of that is imperative. 3) Who knows if wilkerson will hold out, or if we will be forced to move him. this is some insurance against that I love the pick. i put 0% chance williams would be there. once he was, i 100% wanted him.
and once Mariota, Cooper and Fowler were all gone, it was a no brainer. imo, the safest, or cleanest prospects in the draft were Cooper and Williams. Mariota would have been my top choice tho, as you have to take chances when searching for a QB, and i really liked his skill set and attitude.
who really were the other options: Beasley, White, Gurley. -You dont take a HB at #6 overall. id rule gurley out unless we traded down. -id have been happy with white, but explosive WR can be had with our second rounder. DGB is still on the board for instance. -Beasley i think will be a 12 sack player and a great pro, but i think williams is a far superior player who gives insurance on wilkerson and thats worth more
This is exactly the answer. I've noticed most of the mega-Mariota fans didnt like this pick. You were always my favorite mega-Mariota fan, lol.
this pick also means our lineman stay fresh all game. the only thing better then guys like snacks, sheldon, mo, ledger is a fresh snacks, mo, sheldon, ledger. olines are in for a really long day. thats also alot of focuse for the oline, i see alot of free rushers/blitzers getting in because of that. D is going to be really fun to watch
So a need down the road trumps those that are big, glaring needs now, or those that very likely will become needs sooner than the DL?
That's because I'm likable. I'm still eternally bummed, but after the fact--you have to accept it. I still wish we hadn't won those two worthless games, still wish we had traded up but it sounds like Tenn really wanted the guy so there was nothing we could do. While I love offense and would have like Kevin White--Williams is s 20 year old stud that will make our defense dominant. Hard to not like the pick. _
I am not a pure BPA guy. I don't mind going for need when the opportunity presents itself. But Williams picks was a great great value. I don't mind going based on need in later rounds.
