It would seem that the imminent future looks drastically different for this team. John Idzik has plenty of knockers from a football mentality, but I would like to raise a small toast to the man for creating the opportunity that the majority of the fan base want to piss on him for. He is a business man and this is exactly what business men do. They shake the shit out of a structure and cut spending, to establish a budget and create positive cash flow. Just like the roster, emerging talent is given a very short window to produce results, otherwise they are kicked to the curb. Now, I don't know if this was Idzik's master plan, but if I was him, I'd be quietly complimenting myself that the NYJ 2015/16 season looks very optimistic. At least on paper the team seems more than competitive. The majority excitable people on here are already predicting #1 this and top 5 that, and so they should. This team is overdue. But as a fan who will also look forward to a very promising season, I will say a short "business" thank you, to the former GM, who in my opinion, should deliver a small "fuck you very much", to the NYJ fan base when 2015 kicks off with a 1-0.
He'd probably still be here if he called Revis' agents back. He put himself out of work with his handling of the CB position. It's obvious his plan was to move on without Rex.
He was a big cheapskate pussy that was too chickenshit to pull the trigger on any move. I'm convinced even Percy Harvin was just a reactionary move to everybody calling for his head. Any benefit the NYJ got this season from his inability to put together a competitive NFL roster was purely accidental. In addition, he completely fucked Rex Ryan's ability to prove himself last season, and he deserved to get booted as the GM. I don't care if RR wasn't "his guy". The man is a professional GM... he should have done his job instead of putting 1/2 of a team on the field. In my opinion, Idzik is partially to blame for the Patriots winning the SB this year. If the SOB just called back Revis, just maybe we could have had him for $12-13M/year, and we wouldn't have to see him in a Patriots uniform holding up the Lombardi trophy.
I agree somewhat with the OP. Idzik made a mistake by not keeping us competitive at the same time as dealing with legacy mismanagement issues, if we'd have made 7-9 or similar then he'd probably still be here. Having said that, I feel a lot more confident in the current incumbents then having another Rex/Idzik season in front of us.
People need to knock it the fuck off with thanking John Idzik. We just went through two years of shit, including a draft last year with 12 draft picks who's biggest roster impact was the guy we cut doing well for the Saints. We lost Sanchez (who was damaged goods) for nothing, got our coach fired, and we went through two years of ass with little to show for it other than Sheldon Richardson & some cap space. Now everyone wants to thank him for the cap space. Fuck that. I would like to say thank you for only sucking ass for two years, when Leon Hess would've let you suck ass for 6 before getting fired. His job wasn't to save cap space, it was to build a team. He spent two years not addressing our needs, and got fired for it. Yes, you could be charitable and say he got fired 2 years into a 4 year plan, but step fucking 1 of the 4 year plan is still being here in 4 years to reap the rewards of it. He is not, because he sucked donkey balls. GTFOH with this already. Might as well say "well, Hitler was bad, but look at all the new highways!!"
To my mind Idzik was clearly operating on the assumption that he had a 4 year timeframe to work in. Years 1&2 were break it down and he put us in a good position to start building it back up again in year 3 onwards. But he neglected the short-term, messed up at CB badly and had what appears to be a mediocre record in the draft. He put us in position to move forward but I'm not sure he was the guy to take us forward.
Idzik was fired because he was an absolute disaster at a press conference where he completely embarrassed Johnson and made the Jets look bad. He undermined his own credibility. I didn't like his [lack of] moves, but if he had a long term plan that was similar to what is being implemented now, nobody saw it because he lost the ability to get the benefit of the doubt. He lost the fan's confidence. He certainly lost Johnson's confidence.
Your entitled to your opinion. Point is, we'll never know will we. He was fired 2 years into a 4 year plan. I don't know if the plan was on track or not, but I'm sure some description of his plan was explained to the rest of the upper management (year 1 and 2 will suck gentleman, 3 & 4 will be killer). I'd be willing to bet that the new GM is quietly thanking him, for he has walked into a NO EXCUSE environment. You have all the cap space any GM could dream of, you better produce in 1 year and 2 years be on the podium. Thats the cyclical speed the management team of the NYJ seem to operate at. I'd love to have a beer with Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf, and see what their opinion of the last 2 years and next 2 years is looking like.
Sanchez had to go because he was due a bonus and had to be cut. Plus his play on the field was horrendous. The previous GM signed Mark to an extension. Idzik is also the guy who cut Tebow a move most Jets fans loved. The team was 8-8 his first year which was overachieving considering the roster Tanny left Idzik. They say Idzik didn't spend: he had 20 mil in cap space and did spend it on Decker, Vick, Breno, etc. If Idzik was still the GM and had a 50 mil cushion he would be doing the same thing Mac is doing. What Mac has done is basically similar in getting a Wr, a former Seattle OL, a backup Qb, etc. As for Revis. We don't know the entire story on that. Idzik took the fall but for all intents and purposes it seems clear that the owner didn't want to re-sign him. He basically almost admitted that in his presser when he said he ha had had problems negotiating with the Revis team. Mac takes the credit now but only with approval of the owner who was willing to overpay Revis this year after getting killed by the press for it. The only spectacular move this off season was the Darrelle signing, all of the rest of them are kind of ordinary. As for trades, Idzik made good trades including the Ivory deal, getting the Sheldon pick plus a 4th for Revis and even the Harvin deal which was a 6th round pick. The only true disaster for Idzik was that presser. He; made a fool out of himself and it cost him big time.
You probably could have just typed "I'm an irrational hysteric" and saved yourself a lot of time. Not overspending on players does not equate to being a pussy who is afraid to make deals. Who would you rather have, Revis and Cro or Dominic Rogers Cromartie and Alteraun Verner? Idzik got fired because he probably could have had Revis and Cro last year; not because he was smart enough not to sign Cromartie and Verner.
I give Idzik 0 credit for anything..he could have signed Revis and Cro last year for half or less than we are paying them now..all Idzik ever did was systematically destroy the Jets as best he could for the entire two years he was here.
If you are going to stockpile the cap and not sign free agents you have to hit on your draft picks, and not just one or two. Idzik's strategy plummeted us into a pathetic team last year on both sides if the ball. It doesn't matter that he was only two years into a four year plan, nothing he showed in the first two years indicated he was the man to get us out of the doldrums in the next two. He had to be fired; just because the new regime is benefiting from one element if his strategy, putting us in a good cap position, doesn't mean he should have been given the opportunity to spend it as they are. Thanks for the cap room but fuck Idzik and the Milliner and Harvin he rode in on.
I'm sorry, but is that not what I just said? Revis called last year, stated that he wanted to come back to NY, and Idzik did not call him back. According to reports, he did not even consult Woody. So Revis goes on to sign for the Patriots for $12Mil. And, if I recall, Cromartie was also pretty vocal about coming back to NY the year before. So wtf are you talking about?
That doesn't make Idzik a pussy afraid to make a deal, it makes him an idiot who doesn't recognize a good deal to make. You have to be able to recognize the good deals to make as well as the bad deals not to make.
pussy, idiot, whatever... he sucked. He had to opportunity to be labelled a genius by shipping Revis out for a rehab season, getting Sheldon in return, and getting Revis back the following year for less money... and didn't even bother to make a phone call. He should have been canned right there.
As for grading the two drafts of Idzik. Drafting the best player in the 2013 draft at 13 and getting him from a trade of an injured player the owner didn't want to re-sign makes up for a lot. One great player more than equals a few bad picks. But you honestly can't evaluate his drafts this early. Because some players, even Geno have not fully developed. The guy tried to rebuild the secondary through the draft (not stupid) and two of his three first round picks were DBs who were highly rated going into their respective drafts. And players who in the long run could be very good. Milliner after struggling his first year improved down the stretch and looked good the last half of the season. As for the 2014 draft: some of those picks were supplemental picks which are not tradeable. And it was rated a deep draft so he selected something like eleven players. Every guy selected including Tajh Boyd is currently on an NFL roster. And three guys the Jets cut from last year's draft were on NFL active rosters in 2014. A few other guys like Shaq Evans were injured. I know Jets fans want immediate results but it doesn't work that way with drafts. You have to wait at least 3 years to evaluate them fairly. After both drafts Idzik got C+ to B grades from evaluators. You who hated Idzik because you either had to blame someone or loved Rex-there is nothing anyone can say to change your irrational minds.
You really believe that. That Idzik would not even consult with Woody on a big transaction like re-signing Revis. Who said that, Mehta. It makes no sense and is almost 100% untrue. The GM meets with the owner regularly. And Revis is a big deal in the organization. It was definitely something discussed between the two of them often. If Idzik was crazy he lied to the owner. Why would he do something has stupid as that. Unless he wanted to get fired.
I don't think he should have been canned last year for not bringing in Revis, but he earned it after not bringing him in and the results that followed.
I think it is more likely that Idzik told Woody he wasn't going to pursue Revis and Woody gave him the autonomy to do so, and that was the extent of the discussions. Woody has never presented himself to be a meddling owner and seems to let his GM's make their decisions.
