so much for his report from about 2 weeks ago, when he said the JETS were gonna cut pennington, he pretty much guaranteed he was gonna get cut, he along w/ a bunch of posters on this board can now eat there words, there were a lot of posters saying they guarantee chad was gonna get cut, eat your words, because the word guarantee is not one that should just get throwned around, you diminish the word when you guys do that, chad will prove his doubters wrong, what a JET he is for taking a pay cut, he has stated all along he wanted to be a JET, and he meant it, when he starts his win lost % is pretty good
You need to relax a little. First off, anyone who listens to all the rumors out there is just silly. Secondly, Chad took a pay cut because there was no way in the world he was going to make as much with any other team. It's that simple. It's got nothing to do with being a good Jet. This is a business and he did what's best for him.
Rumors are made for sport... Something to talk about while we wait. And i have to admit it is fun to make fun of his looks now his brain.
agree, that anyone whos believes all the rumors out there are true is crazy, but clayton basicly said there was no way chad was gonna take a 9 million $ pay cut, and chad is a true JET most every comment he makes is about the JETS, not him, do you listen to his interviews, press confrences e.c.t, even before this off season chad was thinking team first, he never said or acted [when he signed his big contract last off season] like a me first person, chad is the ultumite team player, a class act, and a TRUE JET
Clayton know as much as my postman as Bill Poilan would say. He listed the teams that need new coaches for 2007 and of the seven he named for each team he was right on only 2 of them. i.e Mike Tice to the NYJ.
No, it has nothing to do with his dimished free agent value as a QB because of 2 rotator cuff surgeries and the fact that his best chance to get back a starting job is on a team with no other QB ...
The man makes a living trying to make educated guesses and different aspects of football. You were never supposed to consider it a done deal just b/c it came out from clayton (or anyone for that matter). Hell, a few weeks ago chad p didn't even know if it was going to work out for him and the jets. And as for chad being a team player b/c he took a paycut, consider the fact that he wouldn't stand to make 3 million anywhere else, let alone the chance to get 9 million if he reaches his incentives.
Chad's new deal was a win-win for everyone, if it works out great for us and Chad, if it does not, then cut him and start over at QB, which is why I hope they Jets take a QB in the draft or sign someone, we need a backup plan, way too much risk involved with Chad. Side Note: Nice avatar, brought back some memories when I was a kid.
clayton never guranteed aything he just said it didnt look good. but as far his stance it was 50-50 as was morts
It's true that no other team in the league would give him as much money, but he did take the pay cut for the team. If he was selfish and was all about the money, he would have refused the pay cut, received alot more guarenteed money, and played somewhere else for cheaper or even retired.
anyway you want to put it chad is no fool. had he been cut yes he woulda got paid. but his career would be over. and he knew this.
True, but to say he did it strictly for business and only to help himself is a stretch. He also helped the team, and believe me, he took that into consideration.
I believe what Clayton said was, the Jets will not keep him at the price he was at. And Clayton didn't feel like he was going to take a cut. One of those reasons behind this belief was Chad's agent went in all hard ball, all the while Chad was telling him to get the deal done. Once it became public that Chad wanted to stay Clayton himself said the two will meet in the middle. Analysits make judgements on what they are hearing through leaks. If Condon is putting out information that isn't true to try and get his client a better deal, Clayton is going to report on what was told to him. It's that simple.
Clayton also said that before they originally extended free agency.. as of march 3rd, they didn't have a deal worked out and I think that if it wasn't extended, pennington would have been cut. But since they had extra time to work on the contract and still have hope of a CBA agreement now - albiet very little hope- they signed him now to a pretty good compromised deal. I aslo believe that the cuts going on all around the league influenced pennington and condon to give a little bit, because they realized that this situation is unlike previous years and getting any guaranteed money would be good.
As much as I like Pennington, I don't think another team would take a big chance on him without seeing him throw, which he has'nt done since the surgery. I dont think this changes drafting a QB in the #4 spot in any way. Chad isnt a "very young" QB anyway and if he did come back and play, great, because it will allow a newly drafted QB to learn the ropes for a couple of years, just like Chad did!
Munch, munch, munch... :breakdance: Anyhow, Penny signing is like a deathrow inmate getting a 1 year stay of execution. Barring a miracle recovery and a phenomenal comeback he's on the slow train out of town.
If the Jets had cut him, he would have received nothing - the $12 million cap hit has to do with accelerating the signing bonus (and the additional $3 million roster bonus), not paying him more money. If he hadn't restructured, he would have been cut, the Jets would have taken the hit, and Pennington would have taken the veteran's minimum to be a backup QB (for KC, probably). This deal helps the Jets in the short run (reducing the 2006 cap hit), but it was also very good for Pennington, as he got far more money than he would have gotten anywhere else (and a much better chance to be a starter than he would have anywhere else as well).
