Yes, I know he is a franchised player and if the Jets sign him to a very large offer before the draft it will be TWO 1st round picks. I say make a trade on draft day and give the Chiefs the 6th pick. They may go for it considering Houston has said he will stay away until the 10th week of the season. PRO: 1. He is young and coming of a 22 sack season. 2. He would make our DL which is already very good to super. 3. The Jets have the money to make him happy. I would NEVER give up two #1 for Houston but the 6th pick when we all know the draft is a crap shot I would do it. Remember the last time the Jets had the 6th pick...Gholston. Per multiple sources, Houston is very upset with the Chiefs. It’s believed that he’ll actively solicit an offer sheet in the hopes the Chiefs won’t match it. Looking forward to your pros or cons on this. No name calling if you hate it.
You only make a deal like this if the plan is to trade Mo Wilkerson for a 1st rounder also. The Jets absolutely cannot afford Wilkerson, Richardson and the contract it would take to make Houston happy. They would be less able to afford Wilkerson and Richardson after giving Houston that big contract. So the 6 for Houston and then Wilkerson for the 9 is what would have to happen.
22 sacks is a big deal. That's where you hope your OLB will wind up but Houston has 43 sacks over the last 3 years that say he can produce at that level.
BTW I get that it sounds like I am hammering away at the idea of trading Wilkerson. I would be really happy if the Jets could keep him at an affordable price. I just don't see it happening and I don't want the Jets to get screwed in the end when they get much less for him or are forced to give him a deal that is hard to live with afterwards.
I don't know, we do have Wilkerson under contract for this year and could slap him with the franchise tag in 16. Wilkerson, Sheldon and Houston with a little Coples. One can dream though, imagine brady having to face that along with Suh in Miami and buffalo with Williams. The afc east could become a qb's nightmare overnight.
In terms of a fair deal yes that would get it done. But Houston and the Chiefs are on the outs. KC might not want to pay him what hes worth and look to deal him for a cheap young player and a fairly high pick. If you trade Wilk or Sheldon for him straight up then they would just have to pay 1 of them when their time comes instead. Not as much but still a big contract.
He's worth the 6th pick to a team that needs to improve the D line. Is that really where the Jets should be looking to spend their 6th pick on improving? Whether he is great isn't the primary factor.
He's worth the 6 pick to any team that needs a pass rush. He's 26 years old and he's one of the best pass rushers in football. However he's also going to command a huge contract so you need to have the cap stable and the team ready to contend now to make that deal. To a team like the Chargers or the Bengals Houston is more valuable than the #1 pick in the draft.
If they straightened out the QB situation first, I'd be all over it. No point in trading for Houston if they still have a need for QB. If they can trade for Foles, then I would do the trade. At that point the discussion would be Justin Houston or Dante Fowler.
