Now that we have Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker as our wideouts, we are going to shift from a run first grind out the yards kind of team to a pass heavy team. Which I love. The NY Jets legacy should always have been one of putting the ball in the air (otherwise they should have been named the NY Tanks or the NY Trucks.) Marshall is going to put pressure on them to get him the goddam' ball. From Cimini this morning: "I like the Brandon Marshall trade from a value/risk-reward standpoint, but there's one concern: How will he react if (when?) the ball isn't coming his way as often as it did in the past? Marshall is what the analytics folks like to call a high-volume receiver. Fact: From 2007 to 2014, he was targeted a league-high 1,241 times. The next closest receiver was Larry Fitzgerald (1,172). For the most part, Marshall has been part of pass-oriented offenses. In nine seasons, with the Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears, he played on only two offenses that finished with as many (or more) rushing attempts than pass attempts. So with Marshall, Decker, Amaro and Kerley, the receiving core shifts to a team strength, where last year the running game was the strength. I hope the QB position gets addressed in the next few weeks, but if not and Geno is the starter, I have seen flashes of him getting into grooves in games. If he is asked to repeatedly throw the ball down field, he seems to play looser and execute better, rather than when he needed to play the field general and minimize his mistakes. I wonder if thats the thought in Jets-land.
Disagree. Football is still played the same way, you run if you can and pass if you have to. The Pats are the only successful exception to the rule I can see. I will say this however, it's really difficult to run if your passing game is not a threat and we've taken a good step here in addressing that.
I was hoping to never hear the stupid term "ground and pound" again unless it was referring to the Buffalo Bills or MMA
I would argue, You play to your team strengths and adjust to what is given by your opponent. Way too often the last 6 years we ran, just to run.
We don't have a QB to run a pass first O. Ground & Pound is still the way to go for the Jets. Ivory & Spiller/Murray, Powell is the strength of the O. Top five rushing team four times since 2009.
A passing offense is a mentality. It's not something you can just flip to on a dime. Even if the QB isn't in place the Jets should establish the system and get the entire team on the same page. Make it the identity and work on it, even if it is rough in the beginning.
You don't stop doing what you're good at. That's foolish. I want an exciting vertical offense just like everyone else, but it would not be wise to stop running Ivory 15 times a game at the very least with hopefully Spiller getting 8-10 as well.
Ya can't run a franchise QB offense without a franchise qb or a competent NFL QB. Geno scares no one. Now get a capable NFL QB like Cutler, Bradford here ...
I'm fully expecting Gailey to install a vertical offense. I just hope Geno can handle it Which brings me to a quick rant. How the hell can Geno look soooo bad all season, then come out week 17 and look like an all pro. I don't get it you can't just flip a switch.
Agreed. If you can run reliably 4 yards per carry, then you never put the ball in the air. But if not you need to drop the QB back.
I want Bradford. I agree, the Jets aren't winning shit with Geno. He's viable as the #2, which is perfect because you need a #2 with someone injury prone like Bradford. However, I'd really like to go into this season with someone else as the starter. Also, I don't think you trade for Brandon Marshall unless you intend to air it out. Decker is pretty damn good too and he'll be helped by Marshall's presence. The Jets also have some decent tertiary weapons. This is not a team lacking in talent. They need a QB and an improved pass blocking o-line.
I think Geno could have been overloaded with gameplan/overcoached. It would be great to get Marty Mornhinweg's view on last year. Can an intrepid reporter drive down to Baltimore for an interview?
Geno was expected to produce like a veteran after getting selected as a value pick. "Oops, this guy somehow fell to us a full round after what was expected, let's start him at the most important position on the team." The Jets need a different philosophy for developing the QB position moving forward.
"Ground 'n pound" is bullshit. We haven't been a running team since '10. Geno throws the ball 25+ times a game in 11 games last season. The Jets are a much more competitive when we show commitment to the run.
Murray ivory, new guards, run heavy, pa pass bombs. Pound, pound, pound, pound, defense bites/cheats for run, pull it out, PA, throw it over the top
I saw it the exact opposite way. Marshall on the outside lets them run more because its going to be harder to bring safeties into the box. I think the trade wasn't so we could see an offensive philosophy change but rather so they could go after one of the pass rushers at #6 to fill one of the few needs on D. From that Cimini article did anybody else see that Decker and Marshall were both rated Top-25 receivers in the league? Nice change from a year ago when we didn't even have a top 125 receiver
I n order for us to effectively pass, we need to have it be play action. Without a good ground game, you are looking at turnovers galore. Geno will never be a top tier QB.
