We need a total of three quarterbacks. Vick will not be back. Geno should not be back. Simms beat out our sixth rounder last year but did not get a shot at the starting job last year. It would be hard to say that his job is safe.
possibly he's shown nothing on the NFL level because he was behind a guy named Tom Brady...not sure if you've ever heard of him?
I'd have no problem with the Jets bringing in Mallett. This is the type of off season where you have to be creative at the QB position unless your landing one of the top two guys in the draft.
I agree here on the overall philosophy of how to run your offense. Not to digress but Wilson is, in more than one respect, the exception to the rule as regards mobile Qb's. And by that let's be even more clear - Aaron Rodgers is a relatively mobile Qb by historical standards. So was John Elway, and probably Steve Young, as well. But all those guys were mobile while being so not at the expense of the ability to stand in the pocket and deliver. I think Vick added that to is career more over time, as has been the path for some who come into the league as more purely mobile passers. Regarding Wilson the key to his success with mobility is his elusiveness, his pocket presence and overall awareness of what is going on around him, that makes him so effective. I did get a bit concerned about his last two games, however, where his accuracy was suffering - yes, he has a proven record of big game success for a young guy, but those errant passes seemed outside what was becoming the common view of him as someone who effectively combines elusiveness with the ability to stand in there and complete a high percentage of passes. Part of his elusiveness no doubt is a function of his size being smaller, which it must be acknowledged is probably hurting him at times. Overall I have to wonder how much higher his ceiling is, and more to the point whether he can continue to "run smart" without getting injured. Despite Wilson's success to date, and the concerns about him going forward, he is pretty much one of a kind right now, and it would be silly to try andfind someone else who can replicate his mix of talents as the Jets Qb. Back to philosophy - Imo Vick was never intended to be used in a change to the overall Jet philosophy on O. He wasn't even imo a short term solution other than in pr terms to give cover to the basic intent of sticking with Smith, as no doubt Vick himself would tell us in a candid moment (and more or less has already). But I thought the same thing when I saw Mallet's name come up. The guy is 6'6" and a pocket passer, who focused on that kind of O in Arkansas. At least in those respects he's what I think is a good fit for the Jets current offensive philosophy, and apparently what Mac wants to stick with.
Good point. But the Pats chose to draft a QB in the 2nd round last year and then traded Mallet to Houston. In just 158 snaps this year he amassed a -7.4 grade from PFF too. Another telling sign will be the effort Houston makes to resign him. Not saying he couldn't still possibly be an NFL QB as he certainly has talent, but to this point he's unproven and has very little experience. I'd have no problem if the Jets signed him for cheap, but given his inexperience, there would have to be additional option at QB brought in to compete with he and Geno
True but Mallet was coming off of his rookie contract. If Tom Brady isn't going anywhere their desire to save money does not necessarily mean that they didn't think Mallet was all that good.
and hopefully that means they don't like Mariota and god forbid, wont trade up for him or take him at 6
Not to get too much off topic, but I think Wilson could be more productive if the Seahawks upgraded their WR's. But it will be difficult for them to do, and pay Lynch, and give Wilson his contract, and keep the team intact. It will be interesting to see what they do. But back to the Jets, if Mallet is the prototype they are looking for, that is a plus in my column and another sign the organization is thinking clearly. That means no flirtations with busts like Manzel, no thought about bringing in a guy like RG3, and likely no Mariotta (which I am on the fence about. )
With all this QB talk we are in for a wild and hopefully a great off season drafting and FA signings.
It seems like Mallett is a good fit for specific types of offenses and would not be good for others. The size and the big boy arm reminds me very much of Flacco albeit that he is nowhere nearly as accurate. Build around the running offense we already have put him under center with lots of play action and tell him to wing the ball down the field 3-5 times a game. All easier said than done but that's what his skill set is based around.
How can you guarantee that? What if Mariota has the same problems adapting to an NFL offense that RGIII and Geno had? If he stinks it up as a rookie or even worse can't beat Geno out for the starting job do we really pass up Cam friggin Newton?
The ones that love Mariota, will tell you his intelligence will overcome that. His football IQ, will automatically pick up any pro offense in due time. BTW, I feel as though Cam is regressing by the yr. His passing mechanics are awful. I think Mariota has better passing mechanics no doubt.
