Good god you want some cheese with that whine? Idzik only has himself to blame for being on the street right now. Idk if it was a simple error in judgement or arrogant self confidence or even a rex conspiracy as some has suggested but what he did last offseason was a joke and insulting to fans and honestly insulting to Woody Johnson who put a lot of his own resources into the facilities at Florham Park to see them wasted with Idzik's stupid shit. Idzik was in over his head, a joke con artist. The whole "roll over money" was a scam he was selling when it turned out he was lost in free agency and losing players left and right. He signed plenty of players to contracts they weren't worth (Decker, Kerley, that shit RT from Seattle, Goodson). It's obvious he wanted to sign Rodgers-Cromartie and Davis.. but he was a terrible negotiator and persuader and probably gave them an offer they laughed at on the way out the door to real General Managers... For starters, the whole premise of "roll over$$" is the stupid to begin with, this is the NFL not your wife's purse, but especially stupid when the organization you are overseeing has shit players to begin with. He's saving money so they can lock up these pathetic players? come on.. Also, if that was the case that he was saving money to lock up players, why not DO that then.. Why not practice what you preach and lock up Wilkerson before he blows up and walks? Oh that's right because Idzik is a con artist that's why. Sorry you bought his BS. It's a good thing Johnson sent him packing because I bet you my car that Idzik would've lost Wilkerson anyway...even after the roll over talk. When he swung and missed 2 off seasons in a row then he had to claim "roll over $$" to save face. Woody, last november, was just trying damage control for the buffoon. Lastly, in these quotes Woody isn't saying lets spent for the sake of it, let's pay for shit players like you are crying about... He's simply saying he wants the guys working for him to use the resources they have available to them to its fullest. That's not exactly earth shattering and that's how most organizations are run. Considering they spent the least amount of their resources than any other team in the league last year AND had arguably the worst roster AND terrible results to go with it, I'd say it's probably a good idea they try NOT doing that again
The teams that screw things up in FA, ie the Redskins in the past, are the ones that go after the big named over the hill or one year wonder stars. The key to building success and sustaining that success is to have guys in place that can recognize the role players who are on the uptick, the complimentary players who off the bat seem like no big sign yet they overachieve or just solidify a position of need. The real test to see the potential of Macagnan going forward is not going to be the superstars he signs in FA or who he drafts in the 1st or 2nd round, it's going to be the guys that nobody heard of in round 5 or the deal he makes to move up in the 4th to grab a contributor. It's going to be the 2nd tier guys in FA who come in and contribute, compliment what we have and fill in the cracks of what's missing. Also the contracts these guys get is going to be a tell tale sign going forward. Good players are good players no matter where they come from but it's uncovering the ones that nobody thought much of that become big contributors or stars, that's where you make a name for yourself in this business.
Agreed. Never did Woody say he would overspend or spend unintelligently, however. Luckily he isn't in charge of it, because I don't trust him for one second spending our money. Hopefully I can trust Mac, though. He knows talent; let's see if he knows the other areas of being a GM (or at least has the staff around him to help).
Spending in free agency can be fine, it just depends on how you do it. The Jets have so much cap space right now that they have to spend heavily in free agency. The owner is basically trying to distance himself more from Idzik, and set the stage an expectations among fans that the team will be a lot more active in free agency. And about Johnson flip-flopping... he's not really going to undermine his GM. Idzik said he'd use free agency judiciously, only as a compliment and supplement to the draft. But his drafts mainly sucked. So we were left with a team that was treading water while building up cap space that Idzik didn't seem interested in using to be competitive, at least not in the short-term. Now the Jets are in a position where the fans are demanding an immediate improvement from the 4-12, losing every close game type of football they've been subjected to. The Jets have a mountain of cap space, and too many needs to fill through the draft alone, unless they had one of the all-time greatest drafts in NFL history (which is extremely unlikely to happen to any team in any given year, no matter who is doing the drafting.) We're not going to draft 5 all-pro players this year who are immediate impact rookie stars- it's just not going to happen. The only other way for the Jets to have a shot at getting competitive again in the next 2 to 3 years is going to involve adding core pieces to the team through the draft. Those guys are going to be somewhat expensive, and we're just going to have to deal with it. No, we shouldn't spend like drunken sailors, or give big signing bonuses to 30+ year old players. But guys who are 25, 26, 27, who are very good players at their position - we do need to get 4 or 5 guys like that through free agency if we can. Beyond that, we should also be fine with bringing in established older veterans who can hold the fort for a year or two, like Cromartie. Cro' is not the future at CB for us, he won't be in the league 4 years from now, most likely - but he could play at a pro bowl or near pro bowl level for us next year and we need that if we want to rejuvenate the franchise. One of Idzik's huge mistakes was thinking his rookies could replace established high-quality players. We have to proceed as though Dee Milliner is a bust, and give him the chance to show us that he isn't. But you don't go in assuming he can hold it down like we know Cromartie can. Same with McDougle- give him a chance, not the keys. Part of Woody's job is selling PSLs. The fans' biggest complaint was that the Jets had the resources to field at least a semi-competitive team in 2014, but it looks like the GM never even tried to do that. So he is responding to that, as well as the overall failures of Idzik and changing his rhetoric. There's nothing wrong with "flip-flopping" when your original position was wrong, that's called learning.
This is why you don't let fans run teams. Scam artist? Terrible negotiator? Swung and missed? Any other stuff you want to pull out of your ass? Most fans want a good team, but have not the slightest clue of how to get it and most of the things they think the team should do are counter-productive. But hey, enjoy your new version of the Knick-Jets. Well, spending intelligently kinda implies not spending everything you have the moment it becomes available. I'll give you an analogy, say you go to a store to buy something and you have 200 bucks. From time to time, the store has discounts on things, but if you are dead-set on spending your entire 200 bucks the first time you go there, you probably won't save a lot. On the other hand, if you are open to keeping some or all of that money until good deals become available, then over a longer period of time, you can get much better deals. Woody implying that the Jets owe it to their fans to spend available cap money (unlike keeping it this past offseason) already outlines the former approach and not the latter one. It doesn't mean you'll never get good deals that way, but on average you'll have more Tanenbaum-like stuff.
Nfl.com has cardinals ranked 9th in total defense and Jets 27th idk what your looking at Unless I'm looking at it wrong
Decker was worth the contract he got. Very fair, and he did very good this season, considering. Kerley was bad this season, but it's not like his contract is crippling at all. Plus, I think he'll rebound. Mike Goodson was unexpected. NOBODY could have known what he'd get into. That said, I agree with you for the most part. While I didn't necessarily agree with firing Idzik after only two years (1st year was a mere throwaway), circumstances like this can be an exception, and Idzik somehow managed to go in that exception.
good first places they need to start with is both OG positions and CB.. letting slausen go has turned into a disaster . he is now one of the better in Guards football. and we have ran threw a 3-4 picks still trying to replace him
The key to spending in FA is to have a plan. If you think your SB window is closing, you go after FAs that are older and may not make it last their whole contract. You do this because you take the risk of having that bad contract for 2-3 years in exchange for having 2-3 great years that help you get a SB. If you aren't a few pieces away, you tend to stay away from offering large contracts to older top players. If you can bring them in for a reasonable price, awesome. If not, then you are going to have an older player, deteriorating with a large contract as you struggle in the draft/FA to replace this player as the rest of your team is improving. You tend to spend the big money on younger top players, coming off of a rookie contract of some sort or something like that. For role players, you stick to your price, otherwise you end up with an overpaid player on a bad team you can't get rid of. So from time to time, you will have money rolling over into next year, because every crop of FAs is not same talent or need wise. In the process, you also take flyers on a bunch of players and try to hit money. That's free agency. To go out and just throw money around, won't work unless you have a top team already. To build a team that way makes building a team much more difficult job than it already is.
The Jets have been a defensively minded team for how many years now and you still know nothing about evaluating a defense? I don't mind ignorance. What I mind is willful ignorance when used in the context of an argument.
