At the same time.. That shit doesn't matter. The season isn't over. The season has been a big failure so far... We'll see.
Yes, the words "so far" were in my post as well. And my mistake, obviously it doesn't matter that we are 1-6 and have lost two very winnable games at home.
Yep... That's what they said last year too, everyone (including yourself) knew Rex was going to get canned at years end. I'm not saying, I'm just saying.
I'm a point where I don't wanna win meaningless games I want the best shot at the best talent in the draft Last year we were a bottom 5 team talent wise picking 18th That's a recipe for mediocrity and football purgatory Never good enough to contend, never bad enough to get Elite top end talent
That's bullshit man. The Lions picked in the top 10 so many years over the past decade... 2002: 3rd 2003: 2nd 2004: 6th 2005: 10th 2006: 9th 2007: 2nd 2009: 1st 2010: 2nd 2013: 5th 2014: 10th Draft position doesn't really matter that much. Muhammad Wilkerson was drafted with the 30th overall pick. The best WR in the 2012 draft was taken with the 45th pick. Revis was a middle of the first round pick. The difference in talent level of these players does not diminish at some kind of exponential rate, these guys are all very talented. Sheldon Richardson is easily the best player out of the 2013 draft so far and he was taken with the 13th pick. You really want to watch over half a season of garbage just to get a top 5 pick when the chances aren't even in favor of the player chosen there becoming any better than the player chosen 18th?
Wanting to lose out to get a high draft pick is just assanine. We have proven that even with a high draft pick you are just a liable to pick up a scrub. Dewayne Robertson, Mark Sanchez to name just two and only from our own drafts. In some ways it seems we are more prone to picking up elite talent in the middle toe end of the first round. Revis, Richardson, Wilkerson etc. Of course is there was a talent that was way and above the rest that would be one side of the argument. But then you need the #1 pick and we are not bad enough to get that pick either. People saying here that we had zero talent on this team last year. Well Rex got a zero talent team to 8-8. Just imagine what we would do with a somewhat talented offence. Keep Rex. Draft nearly all offence. Pick up a FA CB & Guard. Give him one more year and im sure we will be a much better team.
Gotta disagree with you here. You are right that draft position doesnt completely determine how a player is going to turn out: since the NFL draft is such a crapshoot, a #1 overall pick can easily become a bust, and a 6th rounder can become a hall of famer. But that's not the same as saying higher picks aren't better. They are. I couldn't find any good article on this, so I did a little googling and found this website: http://www.drafthistory.com/index.php/pick/ It shows you players taken in the NFL draft since the beginning, and you can sort it by the pick (1st, 2nd, 18th, etc). I had a feeling that while there were many busts taken with high picks, and many successes taken with lower picks, on average, better players were taken high. So I looked through several pick numbers, from 1980 to about 2012 to see how many big names were drafted under that pick (disclaimer: I don't know that much about 80s and early 90s football, so I might have missed some, might have missed some later too, feel free to correct me): 1st: Andrew Luck Mario Williams Eli Manning Michael Vick Peyton Manning Orlando Pace Keyshawn Johnson Drew Bledsoe Troy Aikman Bruce Smith John Elway 2nd: Von Miller Ndamukong Suh Chris Long Calvin Johnson Reggie Bush Julius Peppers LaVarr Arrington Donovan McNabb Tony Boselli Marshall Faulk Eric Dickerson Lawrence Taylor 3rd: Marcell Dareus Gerald McCoy Matt Ryan Larry Fitzgerald Andre Johnson Simeon Rice Steve McNair Garrison Hearst Barry Sanders Anthony Munoz 13th: John Abraham Takeo Spikes Tony Gonzalez 15th: Jason Pierre-Paul Albert Haynesworth? 16th: Troy Polamalu Jevon Kearse Hugh Douglas Jerry Rice 18th: Joe Flacco Art Monk So anyways, even assuming I missed some, the difference is pretty big. The first 3 picks have yielded teams a LOT more great players than mid first round picks.
He wasnt really put in much of a situation to compete, but he will more than likely be the fall guy. I still dont get why he was kept for this year, if he is just going to get the axe at the end of the year. Idzik may as well have gotten his guy to coach the team this year to develop familiarity. So I think either Idzik intends on keeping Rex as the long term guy, and they are on the same page, or Woody made Idzik keep Rex.
