He was released by the Cowboys yesterday. Would you take a gamble on him if you were Idzik? I definitely would. Especially with his former teammate, Sheldon Richardson, being on this line. "When asked, he even thinks that Sam could potentially him the Jets defense. He would give Sam an endorsement if Jets general manager John Idzik ever asked. “It's a 3-4 defense, a multiple-defense but I think he could. I've never seen him as a linebacker so I'm not sure there,” Richardson said. “Most definitely I would recommend him. He's a great person, a great athlete. He plays like a Jet. So most definitely.”"
Jets are doing pretty well with respect to sacking the QB. So unless Sam can play above average CB, I'll pass.
Was going to say same as above, can he play corner? On a more serious note, with Antwaan Barnes back there is really no football need for him or anyone not at a DeMarcus Ware level at that position right now.
Reading up on him from Rams forums, the general vibe was that he's too slow to play LB and too small to set the edge as a 3-4 end. Not a good fit for Rex. Watching him in preseason, I thought he was good enough to play in the NFL but he's just not versatile enough to fit into every defensive scheme. When he was initially signed by Dallas, I thought he was gonna get a shot on the Cowboys but so many players there are stepping up this season. Unfortunately for him, Rams & Cowboys are some really tough rosters to crack at those positions.
He's a tweener. Too small for DL, too slow and lacking in athletic skill for OLB. Because of that he will not make it to an NFL roster and the Jets certainly don't need him.
It seems as though he's nothing more than a media distraction for teams he's going to and it's sad it has to be like this for gay players. Hopefully within the next ten years players of all sports won't have to announce it to the media and create a huge scene over the fact that he likes guys. Most players in the locker rooms don't seem to really care all too much if the guy can ball. The fact is that Sam's just not a very good player and if not for announcing that he was gay he'd simply be another 7th round cut out of the NFL after a year that no one's ever heard of.
We're talking about a 7th round pick who was cut in the preseason and cut from another teams practice squad. There would be no discussion if he had a different sexual preference.
If the injury depleted Cowboys D doesn't have a spot for him, you have to wonder if there's much there.
It really makes you wonder. Co-SEC DPOY and not drafted until the 7th round. I'd be curious to go back and see how many SEC DPOY's in the last decade have dropped below the first few rounds. I've seen the guy play enough to know he's a natural pass rusher. He played well in the preseason with a few sacks. There's more to this story than meets the eye IMO. I'd definitely give the guy a shot based on his playing ability, the concern for the Jets is all the media bs that will follow him off the field.
Different circumstances. We all know why he dropped to the 7th round. You can't compare him to others
