    NFL.com wire reports

CINCINNATI (Oct. 6, 2006) -- Bengals receiver Chris Henry received a two-game suspension from the NFL for violating its conduct and substance abuse policies, making him the second Cincinnati player suspended this season for misconduct.

The second-year receiver also was fined $20,000 by the league. The Bengals have their bye this weekend, so Henry will sit out games against Tampa Bay and Carolina later this month.

Henry, who had a history of problems at West Virginia when the Bengals drafted him last year, has been arrested four times since last December. Two cases have been settled -- he pleaded guilty to marijuana possession in northern Kentucky, and to a weapon charge in Florida. He avoided jail in both cases, but was subject to discipline from the NFL.

His other two cases are pending, including a drunken driving charge in Ohio.

In all, six Bengals players have been arrested this year on various charges, focusing attention on how the franchise drafted players with problems and how they dealt with them when they came to Cincinnati.

When Commissioner Roger Goodell visited Cincinnati last month, he reminded the players of their responsibility to stay out of trouble. Less than a week later, linebacker Odell Thurman -- already suspended four games for violating the league's substance abuse policy -- was arrested on a drunken driving charge.

The league then suspended Thurman for the rest of the season. Coach Marvin Lewis had Thurman's locker taken away from him, and told him to stay away from the team while he serves his punishment.

Henry, who was a passenger driven by Thurman, was benched by Lewis for the next game, a 38-13 loss to New England in Week 4. Under the league's suspension, Henry will be barred from practice for the next two weeks, but will be allowed to attend meetings.

Players had the weekend off because of the bye. Lewis didn't have any comment on Henry's suspension.

Like it was a surprise that Henry has issues with alcohol. Here was a picture I took of him during training camp.

kinda weak, a two game suspension for being in the car? I mean he didn't take a breathalyzer since he wasn't driving.

I think it's apparent he's not dealing with a full deck. I now actually feel sorry for the guy. I don't think he's been surrounded by good people once he left college. At WVU the coaches and some other folks were able to insulate him somewhat from all the vices at that school. (I know what goes on there as a former student. I was there in a year when the school was voted as the #1 party school in the country.) That said, he still had some problems there, but nothing as numerous or as bad as this shit he's been pulling since he's been under the employ of the Bengals.
He was very shy at WVU and did not do interviews, or if he did it was a rare occasion.

I was in attendance when he got ejected from the West Virginia at Rutgers game in 2004. I was seated in the front row by the cheerleaders. About 70 yards down the same sideline Henry was screaming at Rutgers fans as he was being escorted back to the locker room. Because I was so far away I couldn't see exactly what was going on in the exchange. I recall him catching two passes in the game and both were for touchdowns. However, I think he got penalized at least three times. Somebody can check the stats if they wish to confirm or deny the numbers. WVU won that game, 35-30.

In conclusion, I think Henry needs some mentors and it was about time the league told him to sit out a few games.
