6. New York Jets at Jacksonville Jaguars Of the first-year coaches, Eric Mangini is doing one of the best jobs. At 2-2, his Jets have been surprisingly competitive and they might be catching Jacksonville at the right time. The Jaguars are on a two-game losing streak and coach Jack Del Rio has major problems along the defensive line. He played defensive tackle Marcus Stroud the past couple weeks with a bad ankle. But the injury has gotten worse so Stroud might sit out this week. The Jaguars already lost defensive end Reggie Hayward for the season. Backup end Marcellus Wiley probably won't play because of a groin injury. Those problems leave the defensive line thin and unable to sustain much of a pass rush. That plays into the hand of Jets quarterback Chad Pennington. Pennington doesn't have a running game yet to bail him out, but he's had success working the short passing game and his heady leadership has kept the Jets' offense moving. Though they looked to be a two- or three-win team in the preseason, the Jets might now have a chance to get to seven or eight wins this year. For the Jaguars, it's a must win because if the Colts beat the Titans and the Jaguars lose, the Jags could be three games out of first in the AFC South. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/colum...n_john&id=2613906&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab2pos2
Who knows how the Jets will finish the year. I still think 8-8 will be a stretch. But that being said, how does Clayton get away with this statement: "they looked to be a two- or three-win team in the preseason, the Jets might now have a chance to get to seven or eight wins this year." Isn't he supposed to know better? Isn't he supposed to watch practice, look at the competition, and have a more informed opinion? Anyone with half a brain could see that three of the teams that the Jets were playing in '06 were W's in '05 (Buffalo, Oakland, Miami). Adding Houston and Green Bay to the mix (not to mention Detroit) meant that 4 wins was the baseline for the '06 season. Join the real world, John. You keep making crappy predictions out here, you'll get yourself fired eventually.
It isn't hard to understand that statement with the giant ? at QB...the most important position on the field
Blair, you're missing the point. They had giant ? at QB last year and still won 4 games. So even if you don't erase the ? at quarterback in '06, you should assume that 2-3 wins is too few.
whatever John Clayton looks like an old penis. he should stick to polishing his pocket protectors instead of even thinking he has an iota of an idea of what this game is.
Fair point, but add to that rookies on the offensive line, no established RB, new scheme on defense, new head coach, new coordinators and it isn't hard for me to understand why most "experts" pegged the Jets to be in the bottom five of the league.
i expect a bigger running game this week against the jags, being that they are banged up on the DL.. if we can run the ball atleast somewhat effective, that should open things up for chad and the boys..
