If Patterson is any good, why is not in the league? And I don't want to hear about how the Jets "told everybody they know to stay clear of him". For one the Jets need to worry about their own roster and second why would any team listen to the Jets about who they should or should not bring in. He had a look from Detroit a couple weeks ago and the passed. I asked for an example of a "functional one year stopgap vet" CB not one that got a 2 that is "basically" a 1 year deal.

I'm not building Graham up at all; he is was he is, nothing more than a solid vet. He is essentially what Idzik wanted Patterson to be. It's pretty apparent that in this CB market that a mediocre at best team is not going to get a player like that to sign for just 1 year.

Not sure how you can compare Patterson to the others when he played mostly in the slot while Graham and Cro played on the outside (don't know about Finnegan). The caliber and skill sets of the players one has to go against on the outside is completely different not to mention they play a lot more snaps.

My question is still how they intend to address it going forward. Personally I'm not happy going into next season with Milliner and a pile of meh. Even McDougle will now be almost two full seasons without playing any football. So are we burning another draft pick on CB? If so how high a pick? Or are we going to sign a FA? If so, who is going to be available and at what cost? Is it going to be a stopgap player or try to lock up the position for years to come? If that latter then they may as well have done it in the offseason when they had a large array of CBs to pick from and a huge amount of money the play with.

Because we didn't lock up the position in the offseason we're in a situation where one of four things has to happen:
    1) We do nothing at CB and it continues to be a glaring weakness for this team, costing us games
    2) We use another draft pick, possible a first or second, to bring someone in which in and of itself isn't a bad thing but we've drafted a number of CBs high over the years, having to do it again means we aren't using those picks for other areas that also need improvement
    3) We sign someone via free agency
    4) A combination of 2 and 3.

As I've said a number of times I'm more upset that they didn't lock up the CB position long term in the offseason because it still needs to be addressed so now we're either going to burn more draft picks or just sign someone in free agency and who knows if any good CBs will be available and what the cost will be.

Everyone heard about how he went AWOL and no-showed for a game, so basically no one would take a chance signing him. He probably tried to convince the Lions that it wasn't his fault and it was the Jets fault, but when they met him in person it was obvious he was being sketchy. Skipping out on a game makes job opportunities pretty much non-existent in this league. Don't be a douche, the way a contract like Finnegan's is structured, it gives the team who signed him the option of control for a second year but the ability to cut him with basically no ramifications. If you're really nitpicking the difference you've run out of valid arguments, so don't hang your hat on that one it's embarrassing for you.

Graham is just an ok player. If something equally unusual happened with Graham we'd be out of a player the same way we are with Patterson.

BTW, here is Patterson playing on the outside.

he was also smart enough to realize that the only way to get DRC to perform was on a 1 year contract. I still believe that by season's end, Gioant fans will be tearing their hair out watching this guy.

DRC is a highly overrated player. He was run out of Arizona and Philly prior to playing great last year for Denver. He wasn't worth a long term investment.

Neither of us really knows what happened with Patterson and Detroit but being that the report is that he "worked out" for them, I would tend to believe what he displayed physically wasn't good enough. Note they also worked out Champ Bailey and also passed. There's a reason why guys like Finnegan and Chris Johnson got 2 years while Patterson just got 1. It's because they have done enough in this league to get that extra year even if that second year is just for show. Patteson and Finnegan's respective contracts are commensurate with their resumes; they are not the same.

Essentially you are asking me to believe Patterson was brought in by Detroit so they can hear his side of the AWOL story and that Finnegan and Patterson are similar players with similar contracts. Because both those points are very debatable AT BEST, I'm being a douche? I generally like your posts but the levels you are willing to go to try to put a positive spin to everything tied to Idzik is getting a bit silly.

I said Graham was nothing more than a solid vet; you respond by saying he's ok. Not sure what to say about that unless, you can clarify if OK <, > or = to "solid vet". Also I disagree with the thought that any CB that did what Patterson did would be cut. Patterson was cut because after his incident his cost to benefit ratio was below a threshold the team would accept. Trust me is Patterson was any good or good enough to garner a contract that would have had greater cap implications if cut, he'd still be on the team.

You're right in that neither of us know what happened with Patterson in Detroit. I'm just offering a possible explanation. The only thing that is different on a fundamental level about Finnegan's and Patterson's contracts is the amount of money. A one year contract and a two year contract with an easy opt out in the second year serve the same purpose in the NFL, basically that the team does not think the player will be on the team after 1 year. Finnegan played like garbage last year, but has a better overall history. Patterson has played solid, and much better than Finnegan last year. It was basically a take your pick, with one costing more than the other. All I'm saying is Idzik made a choice. It's not like Finnegan has been killing it this year so I don't really think he's worth $6+ million but whatever.

It just doesn't seem as if you know much about contracts, but you insist on arguing about them a lot.

By saying Graham is ok, I wasn't trying to disagree on anything in particular. Also, you're right that a player with a significantly bigger contract implications may not get cut as easily for doing the same thing. Then again, we really don't know what exactly happened, but if a big time player directly disputed the FO's version of a story I'd guess he'd probably be on the trade block quick if he wasn't cut.

Wow if we ever draft a player with significant injuries again this guy can't stay on the field for nothing, complete waste of a first round pick.

So, now we're pretty much 100% guaranteed to be using one of our first two picks on a CB and likely picking up at least one in free agency. So glad we didn't address the issue in the offseason. Phew.

Milliner is just brittle. It's funny because he had injuries in his past but never missed time in college for it. Call it Jets luck

The lack of depth at this position is disturbing. Whose fault is that again?

It's Mcdougle's fault for not conditioning himself enough to prevent an ACL tear.

Someone tell me again why it was a good idea for Idzik to pocket $20 million in cap space in a year where we had no corners and the market was FLOODED with them.

But he isn't injury prone. Neither is Revis, Flowers, or most of the CBs that were out there.

$21m if you count the $1m we wasted on Patterson.

That means nothing though. He's an inconsistent player. He's good one year and awful the next.

    That doesnt mean anything...

Plenty of guys can stay on the field. Doesn't mean there worth what they are being paid.
