It's really inexcusable how they didn't stick with the running game in crucial situations tonight, particularly after Decker went out of the game. I just can't understand it. Ivory and Powell obviously had the hot hands tonight and yet CJ got as many carries as Ivory and Powell had 2, one less than Geno. 22 carries with a 3-back rotation? Why does this seem to happen with every OC that we have? Is it just built into the genetics of this team or something? It's just so frustrating to see time and time again. I'd much rather see them get stuffed on a couple of tough runs at the goal line than see these ridiculous gimmick plays that almost always wind up with embarrassing results. Why put the game in the hands of an inexperienced QB and a patchwork WR corps when you have a great rotation of RBs and a solid Oline?
At this point, Ivory deserves to be the true number 1 RB. He shouldn't be splitting carries with CJ. CJ should not get runs that are in-between the tackles. It's been 3 weeks. I'm done waiting for CJ's homerun. They aren't going to happen frequently enough to justify constently putting this work in progress O and young QB on 2nd and 3rd and long.
I do t understand why ivory was MIA in the 4th. It's like Marty tries to outthink himself. Not everyone has to play.
If Johnson's former self had a shell, he now looks like a shell of that shell..... I love watching Ivory run, but I'm pretty sure he's on a pitch count because his Earl Cambell lite style isn't going to hold up Time for Colin's kid to get more action ;-)
Geno Smith's been with the Jets for over a year. Time to take off the ballerina slippers with his supposed footwork issues and start running more plays out of a 'T' formation set and knock it off with the overwhelming number of plays out of the shotgun. Pennington and Sanchez at least were able to hard sell play action off it better, Pennington being one of the best in the game at it. And if not Ivory, then Powell should be included in the mix more. Capable runner (had a nice twisting 4 yarder last night--and no I'm not being sarcastic--good effort), capable checkoff receiver and a very capable pass blocker. As for the passing game, we were soooo lucky that LB dropped what would've been a killer INT right in his mitts. And Geno with a bad look missed Kerley who was wide open in the endzone on that deflected pass play that Kerley made a stab for.....Kerley was waving his arms earlier in the play if you watch it -- very frustrating. Next week a MUST win, period, because beating New England IN New England would be a very tall order, and Peyton Manning's Peyton Manning (we ain't Seattle by a long shot), and a lot of the downplaying-Rivers crowd's pick of a win IN San Diego is boardering on a pipedream imho. Chargers went into Buffalo and shut them down (10 points) and won convincingly. Are we playing at such a level at present that we'd have gone into buffalo and beat 'em by 12? Need to be 2-2 after next week. Fortunately, as big an arm as he has, I think Stafford's the one guy in this "stretch of QBs" group that they can beat.
Great thread - I was hoping someone would bring this up. I was about the blow a gasket when they kept dropping back to pass. This was by far Morningweg's worst called game as a coordinator here in NY. I don't know what the game plan was coming into the game and if it got thrown out when they were down 14-0 early, but you got to make adjustments based upon what is happening in the game. For Ivory to only get 10 carries? Are you kidding me? And to basically forget about him when you get to the red zone? No wonder they were 1-6 in the red zone - he took the ball out of the hands of their best player in that part of the field. This was a knock on him in Philly and he still hasn't fuckin learned. He needs to be patient with the running game. It's like if they aren't ripping off big runs he goes away from it. There's nothing wrong with carries for 4 yards a pop. You can move up and down the field with that and protect the down and distance. But he can't help himself to go away from the run unless they are ripping off big gainers. And please FOR THE LOVE OF GOD drop the read option run!!!! Defenses around the league have caught up to that. It's too slow to develop. It makes so sense with these running backs anyway. Both Johnson and Ivory are downhill runners. The read option gives them the ball without picking up speed or momentum first. That is not their game. Line them up 5 yards back and run a traditional zone handoff. Johnson had a 2000 yard season doing that once and Ivory is a freaking bulldozer once he picks up speed. The read option is SO stupid with these guys. It's like Morningweg is trying to get away from the run. They will rip off some nice traditional runs but it is not enough for him so he calls the read option and it gets stuffed. Then he has an excuse to call 2 pass plays in a row on second and long. So fuckin dumb.
MM's style in Philly was to get a lead passing and then run the clock out. The Jets aren't getting many leads this year so far. Geno has to be better at protecting the football. The Jets need to catch a few more breaks. They've lost 2 or 3 TD's to the officials already in 3 games and no team can win through that. The secondary, BTW, is not a problem. They're getting the job done. The Jets don't need a big CB at this point they need Decker healthy. Antonio Allen is looking like a young Ike Taylor out there at this point. If he's really that level CB then he and Dee will be the Jets CB's for the next 4 seasons. Walls doesn't look bad either. I'm not worried yet. I still think the floor for this team is 8 wins. They do need to start catching some breaks and they do need to capitalize on them. Penalties were down for the second week in a row but still not where you want them.
Geno depressed me last night. INTs yes, but he also threw about 4 or 5 other passes that should have been intercepted. That terrified me. I had that same curdling in my stomach that Sanchez gave me every time he dropped back, and I was getting over that. That and the fact that the Bear secondary was really shot and he could not do anything, particularly red zone. HIs receivers were ordinary last night (cannot stand Nelson), and the red zone play stunk. Some of that may be on Marty. I think it is on Geno and our pedestrian receiving core, sans Decker.
Next two games will truly make or break this season, Have do win at least one of these games or its over.
The Jets obviously have some questions they need to answer for themselves on offense. Young QB's do make a lot of mistakes. There are only a handful of young QB's in NFL history who have been good right out of the gate. At this point the Jets have made the choice to pass a lot with Geno. They're obviously trying to develop him as a passing QB not as a game manager. They need to see him progressing as they do this or they're going to wind up with Michael Vick on the field sooner or later. It's a real conundrum. Both picks last night were young Eli quality boneheaded plays. Neither of the passes should have been attempted even though there weren't other good options available. Geno is going to have to learn to regret a play without throwing the ball to the other team first. Some times things break down and you just have to pull the ball down and take your lumps or hopefully get out of bounds.
Exactly! The final drive Allen was living in the backfield. It's 4 down territory use a draw play to slow them down
Speaking of running, is it just me or did geno slide earlier if not prematurally slide more and lose yards on a few plays last night. I'm all for geno not taking big hits, but his ability to run is a nice aspect of his game makes up for some of his young qb mistakes. Hopefully geno finds a good balance.
We brought in Marty because he was such a pass heavy signal caller. We wanted a change from Schotty and Sparano, we should not be surprised about this. This has been his MO and how he was raised up through the coaching ranks. He does not believe the offense should lead with the running game and only sees it as nothing more than a breather for the passing attack to keep it unpredictable. This was his rap in Philly and why they got tired of the bullshit. Lousy red zone game caller and thinks the QB needs to be involved in most plays and he outhinks himself and thinks he's a head coach inside a offensive coordinator's body.Outside the red zone? Not a bad OC. Inside the red zone where the field tightens up? Brutal.
Yep. This has been the knock on Marty for years now. For those waiting for him to suddenly start pounding it more, don't hold your breathe.
