You can do certain things though to combat lack of blazing speed. Richard Sherman in Seattle also ran like a 4.5+ during combine, but is doing pretty well. Allen is a bigger guy, so he can jam the receivers hard at the line, slowing them down quite a bit, and Rex can put a safety over the top. That play against AJ Green, Allen actually stayed with him, but at some point, Green pushed off hard, creating the separation. That's something Allen can probably get better at with experience. But if Allen is anywhere near the receiver, you know he can make a play. Guys like Wilson and Walls, on the other hand, they can be right there, and still let a WR catch the ball, time after time, and that's much harder to remedy. Anyway, we don't have a lot of material to judge Allen at CB yet, so if you think Walls is better, ok, fair enough, but personally, I feel like Allen has a lot more upside there.
Just watched the game. First preseason action I've watched. Nassib looked real good. Eli looked like shit. Thought all our QB's played well. Geno looks much improved. A lot of shotgun sets still. All 3 have strong arms but Vick has a total cannon, had that botched hand off but looked real sharp after that. Quigley had a terrible 2nd half. Can we not find a better punter? D line was beast. Our running game looks sick, I'm excited. Just pray these guys stay healthy. Sudfeld timing was little bit off some plays but he looks serviceable so that's good to see. Also Nice to see Amaro makin some plays. I don't think we had a rookie WR make a catch. That really sucks to say considering all the WR talent up for grabs in this past draft. Chad Young had a catch We beat the shit out of the Giants when the ones were out there. Glad we lost one tho, I feel like going undefeated in preseason is a curse/jinx.
Just watched the game as I was out of town for the weekend. Have to say I was impressed with our first team players for the most part. Secondary is still iffy but, again, we're without Milliner and Patterson so they aren't our real starters anyway. The CB position still worries me. Honestly I think our offense is going to be pretty good this year. Ivory, CJ, Powell and even Geno can all put up some running yards. The screen game should be good. Geno looks accurate and our receiving group looks better than expected and that's without Cumberland who was one of Geno's top targets last year, especially in the red zone. I said it after the last pre-season game and I'll say it again: I don't have that instant fear that every time it's an obvious passing play it's going to result in a pick or generally a bad decision by the QB. Do I feel like we have a guaranteed TD in the red zone? No. But at least I'm confident that we're going to at least walk away with 3 and not hand over possession. I haven't been overly impressed with the defense so far which I'm hoping is a mix of Rex keeping it vanilla and just the fact that some starters are out due to injury...but if they can keep us in most of the games I don't think it will be a situation where we are effectively guaranteed to lose if the opponent scores more than 20 points (well, that's an exaggeration but you get the idea).
For the reasons mentioned I agree it was hard to assess the lack of excitement coming from the D, although I did think Coples inspires reasonable confidence in his expected improvement this year. For the offense I didn't see if anyone mentioned here, but it seemed like watching the game you could feel Marty's hand in much of the good we saw. I thought the playcalling was clever but avoided gimmicky plays. Seemed to keep the Giants off balance even if the first team did not score much.
fantasyfootballmetrics.com game recap for anyone interested: 2014 Preseason Week-3 Dynasty-Fantasy Recap: Jets vs. Giants (8/23/2014) This entry was posted in Game Recaps, New York Giants, New York Jets and tagged 2014 Dynasty Rookie Mock Draft, 2014 Fantasy Football Draft Guide, APD, IDP on August 24, 2014 by R.C. Fischer. Twitter @FFMetrics This is going to be QB heavy, so just a few non-QB notes first… – I’m not sure why everyone thinks Jace Amaro (4 rec. for 37 yards and 1 TD on 4 targets) is having problems with the offense or with drops. He looked smooth in most everything he did in this game…and he ran with the 1st-team. I’ve not seen him flounder at all this preseason. he’s a good player in a dicey passing offense. – Calvin Pryor (5 tackles, 1 PD) was out there with the 1st-team too. He’s going to have an IDP impact as a ‘tackle guy’ right away, and possibly will add a decent tally of PDs as QBs pick on him…trying to bait him into creeping up to snuff out a run. Which he loves to do. – Andre Williams (11 carries for 49 yards and 1 TD, 1 target) getting a hand-off, and going off-tackle is a beautiful thing. Rashad Jennings (13 carries for 67 yards, 1 rec. for 7 yards on 3 targets) is fine, and will start, but Williams is going to have some sort of FF-impact…even if it is just chewing into Jennings’ output. **See the 2014 Dynasty Rookie Draft, like never before with our Moneyball-style scouting reports and rankings CFM website ** – Geno Smith (9-14 for 137 yards, 1 TD/0 INT) looks much better this preseason. I’m not endorsing, or changing my tune, I’m just saying he is not falling off a cliff like E.J. Manuel. Smith might could be used as a BYE Week QB in a pinch this season in the right matchup. He’s not falling apart, and he’s got some wheels for picking up 1-2 rushing points in a game. – I never thought I would utter…”Geno Smith looks better than Eli Manning,” but Geno Smith looks better than Eli. That’s not a huge compliment because I’m not sure starting QB is playing worse than Eli right now…and extension from his efforts in 2013. I need to talk about a bigger picture here that makes me sound like a loon, but here goes… Manning’s numbers appear to be OK in this game: 12-21 for 139 yards and 1 TD/0 INT. Oh, boy…does the box score not even scratch the surface on how bad this was from Eli. Pretty much anything positive he did in this game was during a two-minute drill against soft coverage starting back near his own goal-line. Outside of that…mayhem. I logged three passes where Eli threw the ball right to a defender as if he never saw him. Two of the easy picks were dropped (one would have been a pick-six). Another INT was made, but ruled out of bounds on the catch (a long review on that one). The INT reversal by the refs allowed for Eli to eventually get a TD pass…his first this preseason. It should have never been. The national broadcast team never acknowledged a serious problem with Eli. Later, when Ryan Nassib once again saved the day with another awesome performance, there was never a discussion of Nassib as the QB of the future. There was never even a ‘fun’ debate on a QB controversy brewing. It’s as if you are not allowed to speak about it. Nassib threw three TD passes, and led four scoring drives in a half of play…continuing his awesome preseason. The announcers discussed what a great story WR Corey Washington (2 rec. for 36 yards and 1 TD on 4 targets) was when he caught one of the TDs. Never a peep about Nassib. Actually, Nassib had a 4th passing TD in the hands of a WR, but the WR dropped the ball on a defensive PI…leading to an Andre Williams goal-line TD plunge. There was plenty of announcer excitement for Williams, nothing about Nassib and the multiple scoring drives. I was watching the live jump ins and studio commentary show on the NFL Network during this game. When Eli finally threw his TD pass, they showed it on a loop 7,000 times, and proclaimed Eli is back by getting his first passing TD in four games. There were no mentions or discussions of all the near-picks, or anything acknowledging a possible Ryan Nassib story. Eli Manning does TV commercials for the NFL. Eli Manning is (inexplicably) one of five current NFL QBs on the new Gatorade comic book series that I’m getting jammed down my throat constantly. His brother is NFL royalty. To me, a crazy person…Much like in the world of politics or business, there are forces protecting things that moneymakers want protected. It’s the only possible explanation…or everyone in football analysis blind to what’s sitting right in front of them. I wouldn’t rule that one out either. I am not advocating Eli be benched now, and Nassib be given the starting job. I am NOT saying that at all. I am screaming…WHY IS NO ONE EVEN BROACHING THE SUBJECT NATIONALLY? Why can we not acknowledge how well Nassib is playing, and how poorly Eli is…and that those two facts might collide if NYG starts out 0-5? Why must it be totally ignored by every TV analyst covering the games? **Our ever-evolving, ever-updating to kick-off, Moneyball scouted, 2014 Fantasy Football e-Draft Guide and Cheat Sheets are on sale now. FFM website ** – For his part, Nassib was great again. He has three 4th-quarter comeback wins in four preseason appearances in 2014. He has thrown for 5 TD/0 INT this preseason. I realize it is against 2nd-4th string defenses. It is not luck. If you watch and study, you can see Nassib’s smart reads and decision making. His pocket steadiness…his Jay Cutler-esque arm strength. Giants’ fans should be beside themselves with excitement for the future. I’m not sure Tom Coughlin has even acknowledged Nassib besides something like, ‘he’s done some good things out there‘. As the Giants’ 2014 season crumbles, as it absolutely will if led by Eli (I don’t care how good any of the other players are), then how long before the first national voice lays it out on the table and pounds the desk? How many games under .500 does NYG have to go in 2014, coming off Eli’s disaster in 2013, before something is said? Today, I want to say: “Dynasty league players! Those in very deep roster leagues, especially where two QBs can start…sit on Nassib, because he might start by mid-2014!” I won’t say it…loud. You know why? Because the smart money statement about this is, and sadly so for Giants’ fans and players…”Coughlin will never bench Eli.“ We’re all thinking it. How sad is that? How fair is it to Ryan Nassib, who has worked so hard…or his teammates? Blaine Gabbert gets a million chances, and is again this year, and Ryan Nassib…and guys like Ricky Stanzi are buried; forgotten. You go ahead, and keep thinking these kinda guys aren’t getting chance, because ‘they must not be very good’. I think it’s deeper than that…and it’s troublesome to say the least. – R.C. Caught a bit of Kay show earlier today. The Jets commentary as expected was for the most part negative with passing reverence to slight improvements. The Giants coverage however got me interested. The main thing was that Kay actually acknowledged that there are some ("delusional") fans who are raising Nassib vs Manning question. The angle was, naturally, "how can you idiots question 2-time SB MVP". The conversation was around Giants OC cursing out today in practice because the players don't get his system, don't do what he wants. Funny thing is that Nassib doesn't seem to have difficulty with the new system. Sidenote... If this was about Jets, ESPN would've already asked FO about QB controversy 10 different ways and would dissect every word said.
At least some serious questions. The most idiotic part is that if I were Giants fan, I would like this. We got an HOF QB on decline, but there is young promising replacement on the team now? Holy shit! Sign me up!
Exactly but half the fans are going to be brutally loyal to Eli. Saw the same thing among eagles fans with Foles and Vick.
