What do you guys think of Greg Salas. I checked out some of his highlights and he looks like he could be a playmaker when he has the ball in his hands. He's gonna need some big games to make the roster, but judging what he has done so far...it's not impossible. He's a guy I'm looking for Thursday.
Greg "Caesar" Salas is one of those wideouts who is on the bubble. We'll have to see how he performs in the preseason games- I haven't heard a ton of talk about him in camp, but the focus is mostly on Decker and Hill. He could potentially get the last receiver spot, especially if he's shown a large improvement from last year. He did make some big plays in the limited action he saw last year, but he's not particularly tall or fast so his upside is somewhat limited.
It sounds like he's outplaying a lot of guys in camp. If Shaq Evans actually lands on IR, I think his chances go way up, but as previous posters have said, we'll see how he performs in preseason. Hoping (but not expecting) that he's a find
I really just can't get excited about the guy. I haven't seen footage of him from camp so far but the thing about Salas is his limited athleticism. He is a pretty sharp route runner, but he doesn't have the natural ability to be a threat in different parts of the field. He mostly gets the ball either behind the line of scrimmage on screens or within 5 yards of it on comebacks or slants. He may be sharper than a lot of guys in camp but he just doesn't bring a whole lot to the overall dynamic of our receiver group. He's not really very big and he's not really very fast. After Decker, Kerley, Hill, and Nelson, there are too many guys with more potential than him. I'd take Ford and Saunders over him in a heartbeat. Saunders can do punt returns and Ford can do kickoff returns as well. Every receiver I just listed has much more to offer than Salas, not to mention the investment of draft picks in the other two rookie WR's. Say Enunwa goes to the practice squad and Evans goes to IR, you're basically choosing between Salas and Gates or neither. Basically, if Salas is in the game in the regular season we are in trouble.
I can see him being a somewhat capable fill-in if guys go down, but there isn't a lot of potential there IMO.
Would much rather have our draft picks on the 53 than a JAG. He played in 8 games last year, and had 8 catches. In a year where he had almost no competition and a perfect opportunity to emerge, he had 8 catches. That was his shot IMO, and he missed.
with evans probably going to IR I think he has a good chance to make the team.....decker nelson hill saunders kerley salas no particular order
Salas ran a 4.56 Combine 40 yd dash time. That's not crazy, but decent speed. http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/greg-salas?id=2495223 David Nelson for comparison ran a 4.62 combine 40 http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft/player/combine/_/id/25374/david-nelson
First of all, he doesn't look fast. Second, looking fast for the WAC is a completely different story than the NFL.
But David Nelson is big. My point was that he is basically medium in all physical characteristics, and a decent route runner.
It's going to come down to some combo of him, Ford, and Gates making the team most likely. Of course this depends on how many receivers we go with. Did Salas play specials for us last year when he was with the team. I'd assume he would have had to.
