Coleman or Strait starting this week?

D Strait started at safety at buff, does anyone know if Coleman will start tomorrow, or if Strait will make a second straight start?

Disagree, and I hope he takes those words and makes all those people on here who doubt him eat those words. I suppose hes the next best thing after no-one can Chad bash anymore

Its says on www.newyorkjets.com that they will rotate in like they did against the Bills .

Jets' Strait stronger after preseason turmoil

HEMPSTEAD ? A couple of weeks into training camp, Derrick Strait honestly didn't know whether he was coming or going.

It was an unsettling situation.

The versatile defensive back was traded by the Jets to Cleveland for running back Lee Suggs, who failed the mandatory physical. In a matter of 24 hours, the deal came undone. Strait made an unexpected return, but survived the awkward moment and went about securing a starting job with the Jets.

Of course, everything is subject to change.

"I just went out there and kept playing hard,'' Strait said. "I really didn't let it bother me as far as discouraging me from doing what I had to do to help our team. I just kept playing hard, and good things, fortunately, came fast."

Upon his return, coach Eric Mangini and general manager Mike Tannenbaum made themselves available to clear up any misunderstandings.

Apparently there are no hard feelings.

"I understood the reason behind it all," said Strait, a third-round pick in 2004. "He was like, 'Welcome back.' You know it's as much as he could say about it.''

There was no spin applied.

"He really wasn't doing a bad job when we made that decision,'' Mangini said yesterday before practice. "And really, the decision was to improve the overall team. ... It's like anything else ? Mike and I are always going to try to get together and make good decisions to help the organization win. That's really what it was about.''

Strait impressed the right people last week and was moved into the starting lineup against Buffalo.

He rotated in and out with Erik Coleman, playing cornerback and safety. A thigh injury kept him from practicing this week, but he expects to be on the field against Indianapolis tomorrow.

By showing a willingness to reward players like Strait who are making progress from week to week, Mangini is winning over the locker room.

"For me, it shows that coach is keeping his word,'' linebacker Jonathan Vilma said. "For the younger guys, it gives them hope and motivation. As long as they keep pressing and working hard, they'll get their opportunities.''

It's unclear whether another start for Strait is forthcoming.

"Coach just kind of leaves it open,'' he said. "But guys just go out and play hard and do whatever they can to help our team no matter who's out there. ... Especially with the Colts, they throw it all over the lot so everybody has to be ready to go out there.''

Indeed.

Communication is a major talking point every week in practice, and with Peyton Manning working to expose the Jets' secondary, Mangini wants to hear a lot of chatter.

"It's very important in the secondary to have a great line of communication across the board because every mistake is dramatically highlighted,'' he said. "It's not like a defensive lineman where there's two layers before it turns into a big play. In the secondary, when there's a breakdown there, usually Chris Berman is talking about it. That's just the world they live in.''

And it's frequently subject to change.

"In this business you really never know when something like that is going to happen,'' Strait said. "So you just go out and play hard, and if something like that does happen, then teams will see you're a good player.''

Notes: Just in case the Jets fall behind at home like they did against New England two weeks ago, Mangini was pumping up the fans. "We always talk in here about finishing, and I was really impressed with the way they finished that game and the fans hung in with us, even though we got that off to a slow start,'' he said yesterday. "We always appreciate it.'' ... The injury list was unchanged. David Barrett, Laveranues Coles, Tim Dwight, Pete Kendall, Kerry Rhodes, Trey Teague and Strait all missed at least part of yesterday's practice and remain questionable for tomorrow's game.

I don't care which one gets the start, but I'm hoping they use them to the best of their abilities situationally.
